Jenna had a wonderful volunteer experience in teaching English to the children of Samara,
Costa Rica. Samara was an island of love and happiness. It was impossible to see the anger or
worry through people’s eyes and looks. The children were very easy to be happy. A smile on their
face could light them up.
Jenna’s first week started with an English Sports Camp. The teaching was difficult because
some children were poor in their own language. After lunch, she taught them new games and
sports. She worked from 8: 30 a.m. to about 4 p.m. She felt the camp was a success because the
children always came back with smiles and eagerness (渴望) to learn.
The second week gave Jenna more time to experience the culture there. She taught children
every morning and adults at night. The beach was an important part of its culture, so almost every
day she went to the beach and surfed there. Jenna was surprised to find it wasn’t hard to have no
TV or phone there. One hard thing was the language problem. Another problem was the cold
shower. The transportation (交通) was also kind of difficult because the stations weren’t clean and
the buses ran very little.
This volunteer experience does change her. She can understand what the real happiness was
from this journey.

Hi everyone! I’d like to share one of my impressive volunteer experiences.
Last Sunday, I went to the nursing home with my classmates to be volunteers. We went there
to bring warmth and happiness to the elderly.
When we arrived, we started our work at once. Some of us cleaned the rooms and windows. I
chatted with the old people and listened to their interesting stories about their young days. We also
sang old songs and performed short shows for them. They smiled warmly and thanked us a lot.
Though I felt tired after the whole day, I had a strong sense of joy. This activity taught me
that small kindness can make a difference. I plan to take part in more volunteer activities later.
