“However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at it.” This is a famous line from The Theory of Everything, an Oscar-winning film about legendary wheelchair-bound mathematician Stephen Hawking. My own life echoes this line.
My name’s Benjamin Lou, a 20-year-old Chinese American mathematician living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This illness destroys my ability to walk, eat, or use the restroom without assistance. Although I’ve never taken a physical step on this planet, in the rich and extraordinary universe of mathematics and physics I fly high, achieving boundless freedom.
I started to take a fancy to mathematics back in my childhood and was brought into contact with calculus (微积分) as a fourth-grader. I’m always fascinated by the biggest questions that I can’t yet answer. For example, why can we prove anything meaningful in math Why is it that, by building abstract mathematical models, we can make accurate predictions about the world
The imagination that mathematics has given me has also won me a few notable academic successes. By fifth grade, I scored in the top one percent on the AMC 10 for high school students. I won a gold medal at the World Mathematics Team Championship in Beijing. Later, I qualified for the USA Mathematics Olympiad, entering the USA Physics Olympiad. Now I’m at MIT pursuing double majors in physics and mathematics as well as a minor in philosophy.
As a mathematician and physicist, it is clear to me that math isn’t merely about numbers or equations (等式). Rather, it is the very language of the universe itself. If I can understand the language of the universe, why should I worry about my physical limitations
I’d like to say to all those living with SMA or similar diseases: The universe’s most profound melodies are perceived not by our limbs but by our spirit and intellect. Focus there, and you will shine with unmatched freedom.

Sheep herding is a profitable industry in China. However, if farmers want to earn more, they have to solve a range of problems such as scale expansion, processing and marketing, which is almost impossible relying on only their individual strength. But farmers in Nanxiaozhai Village in Huairen, a city in Shanxi, have found a solution.
Guo Jianqiang, a resident in Nanxiaozhai, said he started his business in 2013 by raising about300 sheep. The number has since increased to 1, 000. “I earned an income of 2 million yuan ($309, 000) last year and the amount is expected to reach 9 million yuan this year, ” he said.
Guo attributed the growth to the establishment of a sheep cooperative, which helped to expand operational scale and sales channels with the joint force of stockholders.
According to Guo Zhidong, Party secretary of the village, Nanxiaozhai now has a total of 89 such cooperatives. The cooperatives have also developed a full industrial chain for sheep, ranging from raising, slaughtering and land processing to their sale.
Nanxiaozhai has a long history in the sheep industry, according to the village Party chief, who explained that was a natural choice out of the village's environmental conditions. In Nanxiaozhai, residents used to farm on the infertile (不肥沃的) land and the grain yield could hardly support their existence.
It was Lang Yueming, Cao Zhiguo and other villagers who started their business as sheep dealers in the late 1970s. “They could earn up to 20 yuan for selling a sheep,” Guo Zhidong said. “That was a very large income at that time.” Later, about 80 percent of the villagers were engaged in the business but they found purchasing sheep from neighboring villages became more difficult because of limited output. So they began to raise sheep themselves.
The village business has boosted the sheep industry in Huairen as a whole. Statistics show the city’s annual output of sheep is about 6 million heads, making it a renowned sheep-producing base in Shanxi.

Cows love having an open area of grassland to graze on. But in some parts of the world, this is only possible during the summer. In the winter months, it can become too cold for cows to safely stay outside, so they are kept in a large farm building for warmth. Being stuck inside is not always pleasant for the cattle, and their unhappiness is closely connected to less milk production.
For this reason, some cattle owners have fitted their cows with VR headsets that run a program specifically. The program simulates grassland in summer and was designed specifically for the way that cows get color and light. According to the National Library of Medicine, cattle see shades of red the easiest but have a hard time distinguishing between blue and green.
Reports from a farm in Moscow, Russia — where the VR headsets were first developed by vets — found in 2019 that the cows that used the VR headsets saw a decrease in anxiety and an improved mood. This led to an increase in milk production; which went from 5.8 gallons to 7 gallons a day.
Cattle owner Izzet Kocak from Aksaray, Turkey, heard about this experiment and tried the VR headsets on his cows in December 2021. When Kocak put the headsets on his cows, he found an improvement in the emotional well-being of his animals. “They are watching an area of grassland, and it gives them an emotional boost. They are less stressed,” he said.
The technology is now being passed around the world. According to the BBC, the headsets were made specifically for the “structural features of cow heads” by vets, and the animals were shown a “unique summer field simulation program”. The familiar sight of an area of grassland is enough to improve the mood of the entire herd.
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation says that research has shown a link between a cow’s emotional state and its milk production. They stated, “Examples of dairy farms from different countries show that in a calm atmosphere, the quantity of milk increases markedly.”
