When did money first appear What did the earliest money look like How did it develop into what we use today
In ancient times, people traded goods directly. They might trade a cow for five sheep, but it was difficult to meet everyone’s needs. Little by little, shells became the earliest currency (货币), because they were light and easy to carry.
During the Spring and Autumn Period (770BCE—476BCE), each state made its own money. After uniting the country, Emperor Qin Shihuang ordered the whole country to use the type of money—a round coin with a square hole in the center, making doing business easier across the country. However, heavy metal money still brought trouble, so the world’s first paper money, jiaozi, came into being in the Song Dynasty.
Nowadays, digital money has become an important part in our modern world. It allows people to make easy, fast and safe online payments with mobile phones. With the rapid growth of the internet, the digital economy may grow greatly.
