①The Amazon Rainforest, the world’s largest rainforest, lies in South America. According to a new study, the Amazon Rainforest may become grassland in a few years.
②Climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can recover itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to the latest study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon Rainforest may turn into hot, dry grassland after a few years.
③Why is the Amazon “sick”
④The Amazon Rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
⑤Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. These kinds of activities have made about 17% of the rainforest disappear.
⑥What will happen if we lose the Amazon Rainforest
⑦The Amazon Rainforest is called “the lungs of the earth”. The rich plants there take CO2 (二氧化碳) out of the air and make oxygen (氧气). They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon Rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO2 and our planet will become even hotter. The Amazon Rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely disappear.

四、任务型阅读
Everyone wants to write beautifully. And I love something special—Chinese calligraphy.
When I was a little child, I loved to watch my grandparents write Chinese characters with ink brushes. Later I came to learn about many Chinese calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi of the Jin Dynasty.
At the age of 9, I joined a writing class to learn Chinese calligraphy. The teacher showed many of his calligraphy works. I told myself that I would practise hard and try to become as good as him.
At first, I followed the teacher carefully. As soon as the teacher wrote a character, I wrote the same one. Before long I could write many difficult characters. I was happy and believed that I was talented (有天赋的) in Chinese calligraphy.
However, after a year of learning, although I practised hard, the teacher pointed out some problems in my calligraphy. I thought it was just a way to improve my writing skills and about mimicry (模仿), but he told me that Chinese calligraphy is part of Chinese culture and a creation from the heart. He said that a writer should think carefully about what he wants to show before he starts to write.
I’m not sure if I fully understood the teacher. But from then on, I spent more time thinking and practising my calligraphy. I will continue practising and I hope one day I can know the essence (精华) of Chinese calligraphy.

书面表达范文
Dear Jason,
I’m so glad to hear that you are coming to China. Let me tell you some customs in China.
When you meet people for the first time, you can shake hands gently. If you visit your Chinese friend’s home, remember to be on time. It’s polite to bring a small gift. When you have meals, you should wait for the elderly to start eating first. Don’t stick your chopsticks straight into the rice, because it is impolite. Besides, speaking softly at table is also a good manner.
I hope that the advice is helpful. Please feel free to ask me if you want to know more.
Yours,
Li Hua
