With the drugs that she created, Gertrude Elion achieved her life’s mission: to relieving human suffering. Beyond the individual drugs she discovered, she pioneered a new, more scientific approach to drug development that forever changed medical research.
When she was 15, Elion’s grandfather died from cancer painfully. The experience decided her career path. At age 19, with a degree in chemistry, she looked for work. She took jobs as a secretary, a chemistry teacher, and an unpaid worker in a lab. Finally, in 1944, Elion found the job of her dreams, assisting George Hitchings at Burroughs Wellcome, a drug company.
Hitchings and Elion gave up the traditional trial-and-error approach to drug development, in favor of a scientific approach. Starting from the understanding that all cells require nucleic acid (核酸) to reproduce, they reasoned that rapidly growing bacteria (细菌) require even more to keep the pace of growth. Find a way to disrupt (扰乱) their life cycle, and you find a way to stop disease.
Elion’s first major discovery was a substance that disrupts the formation of leukaemia cells. But the effect failed to last long. Elion determined to find a way to make the effects of her drug last longer.
Elion’s final major breakthrough was in the development of the drug acyclovir. Scientists doubted that drugs could be invented to fight viruses: any substance that would kill a virus would be poisonous to the body. However, through tireless efforts, the drug Elion’s team developed could be used to fight many diseases. Elion’s name appears on 45 patents for life-saving and life-changing drugs.
Though her individual discoveries were significant, when Elion received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988, it wasn’t for one particular drug — it was for a new, more reasonable approach to drug development. As a result, although she died in 1999 at the age of 81, Gertrude Elion is still saving lives.
24. What inspired Elion to go into medical research
A.Her grandfather’s death.
B.Her teaching experience.
C.A drug company’s influence.
D.George Hitchings’s encouragement.
25. What was the key to stopping disease according to Elion
A.Finding a poisonous substance to kill viruses.
B.Quickening the speed of growth of all cells.
C.Preventing the formation of bacteria.
D.Removing tissues attacked by bacteria.
26. What did other scientists think of the drug acyclovir at first
A.It should be put into use immediately.
B.It might be harmful to human bodies.
C.It could only have short-term effects.
D.It could be used to fight many diseases.
27. Why did Elion win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
A.She pioneered a new way of developing drugs.
B.She discovered a life-saving drug.
C.She obtained 45 patents.
D.She adopted a trial-and-error approach in medical research.

Students’ comprehension of words in a foreign language improves if teachers pair each word with a gesture, researchers at the University of Illinois found.
The aim of the study was to compare participants’ comprehension of vocabulary words in Chinese when they were taught new words paired with standard or arbitrary (任意的) gestures and without gestures.
Standard gestures are representational and tend to be consistent across languages, such as those commonly used to represent drinking or talking on the telephone, said Kiel Christianson, an author of the study. Arbitrary gestures are meaningless motions that are made up by the speaker and bear no obvious connection to a particular word.
The 30 student participants watched as the instructor introduced 18 new words, presenting them to the students in groups of six — six words each accompanied by arbitrary gestures, standard gestures and without gestures. Instructors and students repeated both the Chinese word and its English translation twice.
After two instructional sessions, the students took a multiple-choice test, with the instructor presenting the words and associated gestures in random order and the students choosing the English translation of each word from a list of four words. When the vocabulary words were presented with standard or random gestures, students’ ability to recall the words’ meanings was 8.10 percent better than with words that were presented without gestures, the researchers found. They also found that gestures do not need to be obviously specific to facilitate learning.
Christianson and his co-authors assumed that simply watching the instructor move their hands while presenting a word enabled students to create a motion-related image of that word in their mind. “Visualizing a gesture with each word creates multiple pathways into the meaning of new words and helps students remember them better,” Christianson said.
However, the gestural advantage in learning declined when students were introduced to more than about 10 — 12 words at a time, the researchers found. “This suggests that instructors should introduce new vocabulary words in small batches (批),” Christianson said. “That’s a very practical application.”
28. What do we know about standard gestures
A.They have no obvious meaning.
B.They are specific to particular cultures.
C.They are made up by language experts.
D.They share similar forms in various languages.
29. What were the students asked to do following the second instruction
A.Recall the meanings of the words.
B.Pair the words with relevant gestures.
C.Speak out the words based on gestures.
D.Repeat the gestures the instructor used.
30. What is paragraph 6 mainly about
A.A suggestion for future studies.
B.A major limitation of the study.
C.An explanation of the research method.
D.A possible reason for the study findings.
31. What principle would Christianson recommend while applying gesture learning
A.Limit input per session.
B.Review in small batches.
C.Practice makes perfect.
D.Precise matching is key.

In 1993, a ship sailed into the Pacific Ocean carrying nearly 1,000 pounds of iron, then dumped it all into the waves. The next morning, the water turned a little greenish due to newly emerged phytoplankton (浮游生物). The microorganisms, which need iron to grow, draw CO out of the air.
Fertilizing the ocean with iron is a form of geoengineering, a set of technologies fascinating for their potential to meaningfully impact Earth’s systems, and controversial for the same reason. As the planet heats, geoengineering is employed to manipulate it in novel ways, whether researchers mist the skies with sea salt to increase how much sunlight clouds reflect or invent machines to suck greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere. Engineering home-grown plankton sounds like a less dramatic approach. But the field is so new that scientists don’t yet know whether geoengineering with microorganisms would really be a gentler form of climate intervention. Microbes, after all, play enormously subsequent roles in the world around us and within us. For the best chance of keeping Earth liveable, scientists need to understand exactly how the microscopic creatures might be useful, and perhaps even preferable to the more sci-fi approaches to cooling off the world.
One favored approach centers on methane, a greenhouse gas accounting for 30% of the rise in global temperature. Mary Lidstrom, a professor, is working on genetically modifying bacteria that naturally consume methane, so that the microbes pull even more gas from the air. The bacteria would live inside facilities known as bioreactors. They could be positioned near known methane sources — landfills and wetlands — to minimize the amount of methane that makes it into the air.
Scaling up any kind of climate engineering is tricky. Significantly slowing warming caused by methane would require about 300,000 bioreactors to be active for 20 years. And the downstream effects are difficult to predict, let alone contain. For example, the iron put into the Pacific Ocean could have consequences for other regions of the world’s seas.
Also, there’s nearly as much uncertainty about intended effects. Scientists don’t know for sure how effective these concepts will prove to be. The 1993 ship expeditions, for example, didn’t stick around very long; the journeys were expensive, and scientists couldn’t remain at sea to determine what exactly was happening in the depths. Carbon stolen out of the atmosphere should remain buried for at least a century for maximum impact. Yet it’s entirely possible that if the phytoplankton doesn’t sink to deep enough waters, it just gets eaten by the organisms in the surface ocean, and that CO just returns to the atmosphere.
The hotter the planet gets, the more attractive geoengineering will likely seem. Short of large-scale behavioral changes globally, we do seem to be committing ourselves to an engineered solution on our current routes. We might have to decide, sooner than we think, which levers we need to pull, large or small.
32. What can we learn about geoengineering
A.Ocean iron-fertilization is on the horizon.
B.Sunlight-reflection method is cost-effective.
C.Methane-eating bacteria are being improved.
D.Gas-sucking machine is a theoretical concept.
33. The iron-fertilization experiment may achieve its intended effects if ________.
A.the target microbes survive
B.carbon is stored separately
C.the phytoplankton grows faster
D.more deep-sea organisms are tested
34. What might be the best title for the passage
A.How Will Geoengineering Better Earth’s Systems
B.How to Cool the World Without Blocking the Sun
C.How to Steal Carbon with Sci-fi Approaches
D.How Can the Engineered Solution Delivery

Great people overcome challenges and achieve remarkable things. Resilience (坚韧) is what helps them bounce back from difficulties and persist through challenges. If you want to achieve success, be resilient. ___35___ Resilience, after all, is a skill you can learn through purposeful actions and mindset shifts, not necessarily an innate (天生的) personality trait.
___36___ For example, if you’re rejected from a job, view it as an opportunity for growth rather than a final failure. By adopting this mindset, you recognize that not getting the job doesn’t diminish your worth or skills. Instead, it simply wasn’t the right fit at that moment.
___37___ Along with a resilient mindset, focus on effort and progress over perfection. ___38___ Instead, concentrate on the progress you make and the effort you put in. For instance, a writer who prioritizes regular publishing over perfecting each post is more likely to build resilience and improve over time.
In addition to adjusting your mindset, there are practical steps you can take to strengthen resilience in your daily life. Practice stress management techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness. ___39___ Challenge your brain with activities like puzzles or by learning new skills. By incorporating these strategies into your life, you can develop the resilience to overcome challenges and achieve something great.
A.Build your brain’s resilience through admitting a failure.
B.Adopt a “not yet” mindset instead of an “I can’t” attitude.
C.Acquiring that isn’t as easy as it seems, but not impossible.
D.Obtaining resilience is not possible if you are not born with it.
E.This view helps you learn from disappointments and keep going.
F.Perfectionism can stop you from finishing tasks and learning from them.
G.Stay active with regular physical exercise to support both your body and mind.

We often seek fulfilling relationships for happiness, yet forget it lies within us. But have you ever wondered that with so many advocates of self-love, why haven’t we been able to love ourselves Self-love is the root of all your healthy relationships. The stronger your roots are, the more difficult it will be for winds to knock down the branches. Self-love, in its nature, is to truly accept who you are and what your worth is.
The key elements of self-love are essential. Self-acceptance is foremost, as our imperfections, insecurities, and perfections shape our unique personality. Self-compassion is equally vital. We must forgive ourselves for mistakes, failed goals, and setbacks, treating ourselves with the same empathy we show our dearest. Also, self-care matters. Since relying on others’ care is impractical, only we can provide the best care for ourselves.
Self-love and healthy relationships cannot be separated. Actually, self-love is the very core of any healthy relationship.
First of all, self-love empowers us to define relationship boundaries. Knowing our worth enables us to tell what we’ll accept, having a clear grasp of our needs, values, and limits. For example, an efficient administrative assistant is often asked by colleagues to handle all the paperwork and scheduling tasks. But with self-love, she knows to balance her own core work and personal development. She offers reasonable assistance, not taking on the entire workload, setting boundaries as she understands her value and the importance of a balanced team.
Moreover, self-love is vital in conflict resolution in a relationship. When people truly love themselves, they have a healthier understanding of everything. They have more confidence and self-esteem to be able to voice their opinions. When conflicts arise, a person with self-love and self-awareness will approach the situation calmly and respectfully, considering the well-being of all people involved.
Ultimately, self-love is the compass guiding us to personal satisfaction and harmonious connections. Cultivating this love paves the way for balanced, respectful relationships, enriching our lives and those around us.
