When Marybeth Hearn was 10 years old, she asked her parents to let her train a dog to become a guide dog. It turned into a lifelong thing. Over more than fifty years, Hearn has raised 56 dogs to help visually impaired (视力受损的) people. But her influence doesn’t end there — the high school teacher has encouraged several of her family members and some of her students to train many more.
When she looked to her parents for support years ago, things were different from what she expected. Her mom didn’t like dogs, and her dad doubted she would be able to find any money to pay for the cost of the training. However, Hearn presented the project at a Lions Club and raised $2,500. So on a sunny summer day in 1962, the family drove home with a black Lab named Letta, the first of a long series of dog trainees.
Two sons and a granddaughter have followed in Hearn’s footsteps, but her greatest influence has come from guiding student trainers, who since 1992 have worked through a school club with 170 dogs that ended up in different service posts. They spend 14 months with each dog teaching them skills. The dogs live full-time with the students, attending their classes and field trips to become socialized.
The dogs then go to trainers employed by Guide Dogs for the Blind, an organization that partners with the program, before graduating and being paired with visually-challenged. Those that aren’t up to the difficult task of helping the blind can become other kinds of service animals. Often students attend the graduations and help pass the dogs on.
“I love seeing the look on kids’ faces…when they get to see that dog again after three or four months and the dog remembers them,” Hearn said. “It’s a great feeling.”

It’s well-known that humor can benefit us both physically and mentally. The idea that laughter is the best medicine has been around since ancient times. In his 1905 book, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, Sigmund Freud argued that humor is the highest of the psyche’s defense mechanism (机制), capable of turning anxiety into pleasure.
There are four humor styles. Affiliative humor refers to jokes about things that might be commonly considered funny, which is usually employed to improve relationships or make others laugh. If you’ve ever shared a funny picture with a coworker, you’ve used affiliative humor. Self-enhancing humor involves being able to laugh at yourself, often used as a way for you to deal with stress or difficulties and feel better as a result. Aggressive humor is laughing at the expense of others, which often involves sarcasm (讽刺), teasing, and criticism. Self-defeating humor is the art of putting yourself down to gain favor from your peers, which is possibly used by someone who’s targeted by bullies.
Each style of humor actually carries a different influence, when it comes to mental health. Julie Aitken Schermer, a psychological researcher at The University of Western Ontario, says people using self-enhancing humor are less likely to show signs of loneliness and poor relationships with others. By contrast, both aggressive and self-defeating humor can hint at trouble. “We find that self-defeating humor is the most concerning style as it is also linked with loneliness and feelings of not mattering. Those with an aggressive humor style may not experience loneliness as much, however, since they rely on group dynamics (群体动力) in order to make fun of their peers,” says Schermer.
Even if you tend to favor more negative humor styles, there’s no reason to lose heart. Schermer says people can develop a positive, self-enhancing humor style by concentrating on the lighter and more humorous aspects of life. As author Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “Laughter and tears are both responses to worries and anxieties. I prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”

The world has been changing very quickly since the introduction of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI now helps write stories, create art and answer questions, and it can even copy people’s voices. It’s being used in schools, offices, music and movies. Even the Oscars (奥斯卡奖) are changing because of AI.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its rules, saying films that use AI are now allowed to win awards. So even if a movie uses AI to help with writing, editing or voices, it can still win Hollywood’s biggest prize. The Academy explained that using AI will not help or hurt a film’s chances of getting nominated (被提名), although human creativity and input are still the things that matter most. “AI is just a tool,” said Academy president David Rubin. “What truly makes a film great is the human story behind it.”
The use of AI in film became a talking point after this year’s Oscars, when Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist. In the film, both Brody and his co-star Felicity Jones had to speak Hungarian (匈牙利语), a very difficult language to pronounce. According to the film’s editor David Jancso, AI was used to perfect their speech. “They did a wonderful job, but we also wanted to perfect it so that even locals will not notice any difference.” Another Oscar-winning film, the musical Emilia Perez, used AI to improve the singing of the actors.
The use of AI is becoming more common in the film and music industries. But not everyone is happy about it. During the 2023 Hollywood strikes, many actors and writers spoke out about AI, saying they were worried it could take away their jobs. Some worried that studios might use it to write scripts instead of hiring real writers, and others feared their voices or faces could be copied by AI without their permission. Industry experts suggest that while AI can assist in production, it cannot replace human creativity and emotional depth that audiences connect with.
