Thirty-nine-year-old Liang Jiangbo, who became the first blind person to earn a postgraduate degree from Tsinghua University last month, said he planned to devote himself to helping more disabled people better integrate into society.
Born in Bengbu, Anhui province, Liang said his disability made his educational journey tough and uneven. His parents spared no effort to give him the chance to attend a regular school at ten, where his peers treated him as a normal student. Later, he went to a special school and his classmates tried to dissuade him from trying to get into a regular university and instead encouraged him to learn massage (按摩) and think about running a shop to make a living. He was admitted to Beijing Union University in 2006, where he majored in acupuncture and massage therapy. There he also made sure to take part in social activities to build better connections. He said that applying for a place in the social work master’s program at Tsinghua was not a sudden act. It was his dream school when he was a child.
However, there were no study materials for visually-impaired people wanting to prepare for the postgraduate examination. He had to convert the materials into speech-recognition formats and spot possible mistakes during the format conversion process. After actively preparing for almost a year, Liang took the postgraduate examination. As a disabled student, he was allowed to extend time as it took longer to read the Braille (盲文). He was thrilled when he received his letter of admission from Tsinghua in June 2022.
When studying at Tsinghua, his classmates treated him discreetly at the very beginning as they had no idea how to communicate with and get on with disabled people. But things changed after they became more familiar, and sometimes he might even do them a favor. He said “Those changes are the reason I chose the major as I wish for people with disabilities to get proactively involved in some social activities and community life. I hope my story can be inspirational, as I’ve proved that any dream can be reached. Human beings are a diverse bunch and we disabled are part of that diversity.”

Last week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent an email to his employees warning that artificial intelligence could displace them. “We will need fewer people doing some of the current jobs, but more people doing other types of jobs,” he wrote.
Nothing in his email was shocking. Technological advances as far back as the printing machine have got rid of some jobs while creating many others. The real danger is that too much reliance on AI could lead to a generation of young people unequipped for the jobs of the future because they have never learned to think creatively or critically.
The brain continues to develop and mature into one’s mid-20s, but like a muscle, it needs to be exercised and challenged to grow stronger. Technology, especially AI, can block this development by doing the work that the brain is expected to do.
A study last year analyzed brain electrical activity of university students during the activities of handwriting and typing. Those who were handwriting showed higher levels of neural (神经) activation across more brain regions. “Whenever handwriting movements are included as a learning strategy, more of the brain gets stimulated, resulting in the formation of more complex neural network connectivity,” the researchers noted. “However, most students in colleges and many in high schools use AI tools to take notes and summarize lectures.”
Why commit information to memory when AI tools can provide answers at our fingertips For one thing, the brain can’t draw connections between ideas that aren’t there. Nothing comes from nothing. Creativity doesn’t happen unless the brain is engaged.
College and high-school students also increasingly use AI tools to write papers, perform mathematical proofs, and create computer code. That means they don’t learn how to think through, express or defend ideas.
“Why hire a brainless bachelor’s degree holder for a job that an AI tool can do at lower costs and with no complaint ” Andy Jassy asked by the end of the letter.

Butter made from air instead of cows A California-based startup claims to have worked out a complex process that eliminates the need for the animals while making its dairy-free alternative taste just as good.
Savor, backed by the Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, has been experimenting with creating dairy-free alternatives to ice-cream, cheese, and milk by utilizing (利用) a thermo chemical process that allows it to build fat molecules, creating chains of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen. The company has now announced a new animal-free butter alternative.
Reducing meat and dairy consumption is one of the key ways that humanity can reduce its environmental impact, as livestock production is a significant source of greenhouse gases, and Savor says its products will have a significantly lower carbon footprint than animal-based ones. The “butter” could potentially come in at less than 0.8g CO2 equivalent per calorie. The standard climate footprint of real unsalted butter with 80% fat is approximately 2.4g CO2 equivalent per calorie.
Kathleen Alexander, Savor’s chief executive, said: “We are currently pre-commercial and working through regulatory approval to be able to sell our butter. We are not expecting to be able to move forward with any kind of sales until at least 2025.”
Meat and dairy alternatives have become more and more popular in recent years, but some fall short in terms of flavour. Savor says the flavour of its butter is more exact. The question now is whether buyers will take to such synthetic fats.
Advocating for the initiative in an online blog post, Gates wrote: “The idea of switching to lab-made fats and oils may seem strange at first. But their potential to significantly reduce our carbon footprint is huge. By making use of proven technologies and processes, we get one step closer to achieving our climate goals. The process doesn’t release any greenhouse gases, and it uses no farmland and less than a thousandth of the water that traditional agriculture does. And most importantly, it tastes really good-like the real thing, because chemically it is.”
