Redevelopment Announcement
Dear students,
We have recently finished planning the redevelopment of our school. It is our sincere hope that our students can be educated in a better environment with excellent facilities (设施). To this end, we have decided to:
●turn canteen B into an IT Center to offer students and teachers modern learning and teaching facilities, and then connect it with the library;
●redevelop part of the existing Sports Center to create a multi-use game area—a dedicated (专用的) and safe space for students to play and have fun;
●plant more trees around school teaching buildings to reduce traffic noise and give students a greener study environment.
Redevelopment will start this summer. We will try our best to make sure that most of the work is done outside of term so as to reduce the negative effect on your school life as much as possible. We will keep you informed as the project progresses. Please feel free to contact me if you have different opinions on our redevelopment plan.

Get up at 6 am, arrive at the hospital one hour earlier to help patients check in, and keep patients company during consultations (咨询)... In recent years, “patient escorts” has appeared as a new industry and 26-year-old Zhang Tian is one of them.
September 4 was a lucky day for Zhang Tian. On this day, she saw a video about patient escorts on a short video platform. She went online and read a great deal of information and found there indeed is a certain need for patient escorts, especially for the elderly, children, and pregnant (怀孕的) women. The memory of her first task is still alive and fresh in her mind. She received a phone call on September 9 from a man whose father was seriously ill and might need an operation. He wanted Zhang Tian to keep his father company through the consultation and treatment. The rapid development of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) has been influencing education at all levels, from primary and secondary to higher education.
Countries around the world are trying to find ways to use AI more flexibly in education so as to provide education for students in faraway areas and teach them the skills needed to get successful jobs in the 21st century. China has become a leader in the application of AI in education and training by developing smart learning systems and stepping up research on AI.
An important area of research is the use of AI to help language learning. AI can help teachers to tailor teaching materials for learners, producing their personal teaching materials according to individual (个人的) learners’ needs and improve students’ performance. Researchers from Beijing Normal University explored how an automatic (自动的) generation system can help in teaching Chinese as a second language in schools.
The researchers developed a model to use AI to ensure the resources meet learners’ needs. Studies showed that students using the model took part in class activities more actively.
In addition to teaching languages, AI can also be used to help students of all ages to learn about different cultures. Researchers from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and some other foreign universities have been exploring ways to use AI to help students from different countries learn from each other and know about each other’s cultures.
With the development of machine learning, AI has the ability to change education if designed and applied properly. AI applications should be designed in a way that they benefit learners and educators. For that purpose, rules for learners, teachers and other staff in educational organizations should be in place.
8. What is the main purpose of using AI in education worldwide
A.To develop smart learning systems.
B.To supply remote education and career skills.
C.To do research on language teaching.
D.To realize cross-cultural communication.
9. What does the underlined word “tailor” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Design specially.
B.Sell cheaply.
C.Collect widely.
D.Classify clearly.
10. What’s the advantage of the AI language learning model
A.It reduces teachers’ workload greatly.
B.It makes students more active in class.
C.It provides free learning resources.
D.It helps students travel abroad easily.
11. What suggestion does the author put forward in the last paragraph
A.Stop using AI in education.
B.Set relevant rules for AI use.
C.Develop more AI learning models.
D.Carry out more cross-cultural courses.

It isn’t just the beauty of natural wonders like the Grand Canyon in America, the Great Wall in China and the Angel Fall in Venezuela that can take your breath away. You can find awe (敬畏) in everyday things. A new research, published in the journal Emotion, found that people who took “awe walks” felt more positive emotions in their daily lives.
In the study, 52 volunteers were divided into two groups. They were told to take at least one 15-minute walk every day for eight weeks. Volunteers in the “awe group” were told how to inspire awe as they walked. “We asked them to try to see the world with fresh eyes—to take in new details of a leaf or flower,” Sturm says. For example, one volunteer from the awe group wrote about “the beautiful fall colors and how the leaves were no longer crunchy (嘎吱响) underfoot because of the rain”. However, people in the other group were less focused on the world around them. One volunteer wrote, “I thought about our vacation in Hawaii next Thursday.”
In addition, volunteers were asked to take selfies (自拍) in the beginning, middle, and end of each walk. Researchers found that volunteers taking awe walks filled less of their photographs with their own images and more with the background scenery. “When we feel awe, our attention is moved from focusing on ourselves to focusing on the world around us,” Sturm says. “Awe influences our social relationships because it helps us to feel more connected with the world, nature, and other people.” Their smiles also grew broader by the end of the study.
Volunteers in the control group took more walks than those in the awe group, the researchers discovered. But walking more didn’t result in positive changes in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the positive effect comes mainly from experiencing awe instead of just spending time exercising.
12. Why are some natural wonders mentioned at first
A.To introduce the research topic.
B.To compare different tourist spots.
C.To show the beauty of global scenery.
D.To call on people to protect nature.
13. What were volunteers in the awe group required to do while walking
A.Take lots of selfies.
B.Notice small natural details.
C.Plan their future trips.
D.Record their walking time.
14. What change happened to awe walkers in their selfies
A.They smiled less widely.
B.They took fewer photos.
C.They focused more on surroundings.
D.They put themselves in the center.
15. What’s the key factor bringing positive feelings according to the research
A.Long walking time.
B.The feeling of awe.
C.Beautiful natural views.
D.Taking selfies regularly.

The sun was beginning to set, and it covered the streets with a warm golden light. Sarah walked home alone after her first day at Oakwood High School. Her schoolbag felt heavier than usual with new textbooks and the weight of loneliness. Everyone seemed to already have their own friends, and she hadn’t found the courage to start a conversation with anyone.
To avoid the busy street, she took a different way through the quiet community park. It was then that she noticed a small white dog in the park. The dog was smelling the ground anxiously, and its leash (狗链) was on the ground behind it. A wave of concern washed over Sarah. She stayed still, speaking in a calm, gentle voice. Slowly, the dog carefully came near. Just as she gently picked up the leash, a large truck passed fast on the road. Unexpectedly, something dramatic happened.

Suddenly an idea flashed through my mind. Since I was thin and short, I could easily crawl under the stage. I told Mrs. Alvarez my thought and she nodded and let me go down. I bent my body and slowly walked towards the whimpering puppy, gently holding it in my arms.
After the show, Mrs. Alvarez praised me warmly. She said my small size saved the whole performance. At that moment, I fully understood Mom’s words. Being small was not a weakness; it brought me special advantages. I was no longer upset about my figure and learned to accept myself.
