Chinese poetry through the guqin:
a practical tool to learn Chinese language and culture
Confucius said: “To educate somebody, you should start with poetry, and finish with music”. The North American Guqin Association (NAGA) has developed a new class series that will combine poetry and music with guqin study and aims to deepen the appreciation of Chinese poetry and guqin culture through the exploration of guqin songs.
Course description
The classes will consist of lectures and practical sessions. Students will not only learn how to play guqin and sing poems by famous poets from different Chinese dynasties such as Li Bai’s Farewell to Meng Haoran at Yellow Crane Terrace, but also will learn standard Chinese through these poems. At the end of the course, students will be able to sing at least five famous Chinese poems while playing guqin, and will have a broad appreciation of Chinese culture.

Two years ago, my son sat me down for a talk. “Mom, it’s time,” he said. “Hear me out: It’s time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone.”
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to my son’s opinion about our home technology. Since his reasoning was sound and his suggestions were acceptable, I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I’d known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. After something was stolen from our front yard, he picked out, set up, and now monitors our security camera. When my computer died, I took him shopping with me.
He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming. I see our time together reduced and our shared interests shrinking. That’s why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted.
It’s changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he’s learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an equally unknowing audience. The Parent-child relationship is not only changed; it’s even slightly reversed. He’s leading me. I’m asking him for help and advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He’s taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone not much of a reader, he now searches instruction booklets. He’s even emailed and called—yes, made an actual phone call—to customer service or tech support when products weren’t working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it’s proved to be a valuable way to learn from, work with, and enjoy time with my teen.

A problem has been annoying you for days — you just can’t solve it, and it’s driving you crazy. But then you go for a walk and suddenly the answer flashes right into your head! It’s a great feeling and this link between exercise and creativity has been studied by scientists around the world.
Dr. Chong Chen and his team from Japan’s Yamaguchi University wanted to find out how different types of physical activity can help us solve problems and think creatively. They looked at 21 past studies from places including the US, the UK, Spain, Sweden, China, India and Japan. The studied exercises included walking, running, cycling, dance and yoga.
In fact, Chen and his team found that it was natural walking that almost always had a positive effect on people’s creativity — even if it was just walking inside a room or going up and down some stairs, for as little as three to four minutes. Dance is also good. Most of the studies Chen’s team looked at found that dance helps significantly with creativity — particularly among adults. However, the results for yoga were unclear. And low-intensity aerobic exercise like cycling was not found to have an effect.
There were some advantages from right and energetic aerobic exercise, however, but “too much effort” exercise seemed not to have a mostly positive effect. That is to say, the hardest exercise actually didn’t give the best results. So completely tiring yourself probably won’t help your creativity!
Chen wrote that his team’s findings could be used in schools and businesses by including short periods of physical activity during the day to encourage creative thinking. It’s not even about keeping fit, Chen says — you just have to move!

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may displace workers, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned in an email last week. “We will need fewer people doing some of the current jobs, but more people doing other types of jobs,” he wrote.
Nothing in his email was shocking. Technological advances as far back as the printing machine have got rid of some jobs while creating many others. The real danger is that too much reliance on AI could lead to a generation of young people unequipped for the jobs of the future because they have never learned to think creatively or critically.
The brain continues to develop and mature into one’s mid-20s, but like a muscle, it needs to be exercised and challenged to grow stronger. Technology, especially AI, can block this development by doing the work that the brain is expected to do.
A study last year analyzed brain electrical activity of university students during handwriting and typing. Those handwriting showed higher neural activation across more brain regions. “Handwriting movements stimulate more complex neural networks,” researchers noted. “However, most college and high school students use AI to take notes and summarize lectures.”
Why memorize when AI can instantly provide answers The brain cannot connect ideas that are not stored inside it. Creativity requires active mental engagement, not passive reliance on tools.
More and more students use AI to write papers, prove math formulas and code. This means they skip the process of thinking, expressing and defending ideas.
“Why hire a mindless college graduate when AI can complete work at lower cost without complaint ” Andy Jassy asked at the end of the letter.
