Learning any language is hard, but learning English can be especially challenging. Why Because native speakers
use the language in ways that textbooks could never describe. In particular, words that British people use cause
many language students to scratch their heads.
Here s an example: You overhear a Briton calling someone a“wazzock”. But what exactly is a wazzock
This word, in fact, means a foolish person, although there s nothing about it that would help you guess that. There
are many strange terms like this in British English—the Oxford English Dictionary would be much smaller without
these odd usages filling its pages.
How can these odd words be explained Part of the answer is the British sense of humor. Britons don t like to
take things too seriously, and this is evident through many British words and phrases. For example, to“spend a
penny” means to use the bathroom. It refers to the days when people had to pay a penny to use a public toilet.
In an interview, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be historical reasons for the large number
of odd words and phrases in British English. He thought that they began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
This was a great age for the theater, when Shakespeare and other writers worked hard to keep up with the demand
for new plays. The theater s popularity also provided an incentive（刺激）to create new words.
With this in mind, perhaps Shakespeare and his peers（同行）are responsible for unusual British words such
as“codswallop” and“balderdash”—which both, ironically（讽刺地）, mean“nonsense”.
While these strange words may be confusing to non-native speakers, they certainly make studying English a lot
more interesting.

Parrots are known for being cheerful and colorful birds with a chatty side. To①spotlight these beautiful birds,
Nayan Shrimal and Venus Bird from The Paper Ark have launched The Parrot Project, in which they create lifelike
paper portraits (肖像) in their likeness for a good cause.
“This series is a respect to these amazing birds and their contribution to our ecosystem,” the artists said. To
them, parrots are not only beautiful birds that have inspired them creatively but also a species that has long②been
subjected to exploitation.“Many parrot species are threatened and some are near to extinction,” Shrimal and
Bird explained.“They are suffering a lot due to③deforestation and pet trade and we wanted to shine light on the
importance of these species in our ecosystem through our art.”
To create these realistic pieces, they begin by picking a species from their collection of bird books. Once they
settle on a parrot, they carry out some online research to get all the information needed for a faithful description.
“Each species is created keeping in mind their habitat so each artwork in this series shows the bird perching (栖息)
on the tree or plant which is either their favorite plant or their perching tree,” the artists share.
Each bird is made up of tiny paper bits, put together following a drawing previously made by the team. They
also carefully paint each piece to truly capture the details that make the species so unique, such as the yellow spots
on the head of the red-tailed black cockatoo or the ombre (渐变色) feathers of the Scarlet Macaw.
The detailed portraits are now available for sale online, with the artists donating 10% from each sale towards parrot
conservation.“Our primary purpose with this series is to motivate people to learn about these beautiful birds and
their importance in our ecosystem and the threats they are facing,” Shrimal and Bird explain.“We want our
audience to come together and take steps to conserve this species.”

In the desert in Peru, over 300 new ancient drawings were discovered by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
drones (无人机). The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing
the reddish top layer (层) of rocks in the desert. The drawings are called "geoglyphs (地画)". The Nazca Lines,
which are a famous group of huge ancient drawings, include many different kinds of geoglyphs, from simple
shapes to pictures of animals and plants, usually drawn with a single long,①winding line.
The first geoglyph was discovered in 1927. Since then, scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs in the area.
Now, using AI and drones, scientists have found 303 new geoglyphs. The discovery of one geoglyph used to take
three or four years, but now may be done in two or three months. However, the AI program also made lots of

mistakes—for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the scientists discovered only one actual geoglyph.
Even so, the new method of turning up geoglyphs was much faster than the scientists could have managed without
drones and AI.
To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for potential
geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours looking at places the AI had advised. They took lots of pictures with
drones and worked on the ground in Peru to check out the locations. Most of the new-found geoglyphs are smaller
than the ones already discovered, and are about nine meters in length. Many of them seem to show humans as well
as animals.
The scientists are still trying to②figure out what the geoglyphs mean. For one thing, the scientists discovered paths
in the Nazca Desert. The scientists believe these paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert,
and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travellers. The scientists also believe the larger
