Microplastic Pollution
In the past few years, scientists have found microplastics in our soil, tap water, bottled water, beer and even in the air we breathe. And there’s growing concern about the ___12___ health risks they pose to humans.
The new analysis in the UK have discovered microplastics widely ___13___ across all 10 lakes and rivers sampled. More than 1,000 small pieces of plastic per litre were found in the River Thame, which was ___14___ last year as the most polluted place tested worldwide. Even in relatively remote places such as the Falls of Dochant and Loch Lomond in Scotland, two or three pieces per litre were found.
Microplastics are not a ___15___ kind of plastic, but rather any type of small pieces of plastic that is less than 5 mm in length according to the U. S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They may ___16___ from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing, and industrial processes.
Humans are known to ___17___ the tiny plastic particles through food and water, but the possible health effects on people and ecosystems have yet to be determined. One study, in Singapore, has found that microplastics can ___18___ harmful microbes (微生物).
Research by the National University of Singapore found more than 400 types of bacteria on 275 pieces of microplastic collected from local beaches. They included insects that cause gastroenteritis (肠胃炎) and wound ___19___ in humans.
“Microplastics are being found ___20___ everywhere but we do not know the harm they could be doing,” said Christian Dunn at Bangor University, Wales, who led the work. “It’s no use looking back in 20 years’ time and saying: ‘If only we’d realized just how bad it was.’ We need to be monitoring our waters now and we need to think, as a country and a world, how we can be reducing our ___21___ on plastic.”
三、完形填空
How can one person enjoy good health, while another person looks old before her time Humans have been asking this question for thousands of years, and recently, it’s becoming clearer and clearer to scientists that the differences between people’s rates of aging lie in the complex ___22___ among genes, social relationships, environments and lifestyles. Even though you were born with a particular set of genes, the way you live can ___23___ how they express themselves. Some lifestyle factors may even turn genes on or ___24___.
Deep within the genetic heart of all our cells are telomeres (端粒), or repeating parts of noncoding DNA that live at the ends of the chromosomes (染色体). They form caps at the ends of the chromosomes and keep the genetic material together. Shortening with each cell division, they help determine how ___25___ a cell ages. When they become too short, the cell stops ___26___ altogether. This isn’t the only reason a cell can age — there are other stresses on cells we don’t yet understand very well — but short telomeres are one of the ___27___ reasons human cells grow old. We’ve devoted most of our careers to studying telomeres, and one great discovery from our labs is that telomeres can actually ___28___.
Scientists have learned that several thought patterns appear to be ___29___ for telomeres, and one of them is cynical hatred. Cynical hatred is defined by high anger and frequent thoughts that other people cannot be trusted. Someone with hatred doesn’t just think, “I hate to stand in long lines”; they think, “Others ___30___ sped up and beat me to my rightful position in the line!” — and then get violently anxious. People who score high on measures of cynical hatred tend to get more heart disease, metabolic disease and often die at ___31___ ages. They also have shorter telomeres. In a study of British civil servants, men who scored high on measures of cynical hatred had shorter telomeres than men whose hatred scores were low. The most hostile men were30% more likely to have short telomeres.
What this means: aging is a ___32___ process that could possibly be sped up or slowed down — and, in some aspects, even reversed. To an extent, it has ___33___ us and the rest of the scientific community that telomeres do not simply carry out the commands issued by your genetic code. Your telomeres are ___34___ you. The foods you eat, your response to challenges, the amount of exercise you get, and many other factors appear to influence your telomeres and can prevent ___35___ aging at the cellular level. One of the keys to enjoying good health is simply doing your part to foster healthy cell ___36___.

Some classrooms in Taft Elementary in California have a common weakness: They don’t have windows. That’s true for Earnest’s fifth grade classroom. “Most of the day, my students are inside and don’t really see any green trees or grass,” Earnest told CBS News. He worries that the dull classroom environment has harmful effects on his students.
Rodriguez, a former school psychologist (a professional in school to support students’ learning and teachers’ teaching) and now a photographer, is focusing on landscape photography. He knows clearly the effect which nature has on mental health and told CBS News that the lack of sight of trees or grasses is a problem and being in and around nature does students much good, including helping to improve their test scores and control over moods.
Rodriguez had managed to design hospital walls where he could print landscapes to brighten dull rooms. He also attempted to bring nature into classrooms, but his former working experience warned him against touching walls in classrooms, which belong to the teachers. Soon, Rodriguez had an aha moment — to bring landscapes into classrooms through the ceilings! He used his photography skills to take 360-degree shots of tree canopies (树冠) and fitted them onto classroom ceilings. So when the students looked up, they felt like sitting under a tree. He even created a project called “Nature in the Classroom” and has given his photos of tree canopies to schools in 10 different areas for free.
CBS News was there when Rodriguez uncovered the canopy to Earnest’s fifth grade students. “Beautiful,” one student said as she entered the room. Another expressed that seeing the green tree leaves brought him peace. Earnest believed that the new addition would increase students’ willingness to come into the classroom, among other great things. “This is a marriage of both my jobs as a school psychologist and a photographer,” Rodriguez said.

A.That they can’t see nature in the classroom.
B.That their school is very dully decorated.
C.That they don’t have interest in his classes.

C.got a new idea to improve classrooms
D.learned ways to take up teachers’ corner
39. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.teachers often have great ideas to deal with classroom walls
B.both Rodriguez’s jobs play a significant role in his marriage
C.photographers do more good to schools than psychologists do
D.Earnest appreciated Rodriguez’s change of classroom ceilings
40. What might be the best title of the passage

Forty percent of Americans say they are more cautious about what they write in emails since last year’s cyber-attacks against the Democratic Party, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday.
The March 11- 20 opinion survey showed that a sizable minority of Americans made personal changes to how they interact online following the hacking of emails during the 2016 U. S. presidential campaign, which were later published by WikiLeaks and other entities.
Among respondents, 45 percent said they had changed their online passwords since the hacks.
The U. S. intelligence agencies believe Russia orchestrated the disclosure of the emails to embarrass the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and help Republican Donald Trump win. The emails also led to the ouster (罢免)of Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. But Moscow denies the accusation.
Concerns about online security crossed party lines, with 43 percent of Democrats and 40 percent of Republicans saying they had been more cautious about personal emails since the election hacking.
“It makes you start to wonder how secure anything is as far as your own privacy,” said Delenc Rutledge, 67, a retired teacher in Indiana who participated in the poll. “And yet I'm not the greatest at coming up with great passwords—I’m not sure it would make any difference. ”
Despite concerns about digital privacy, only a small percentage of Americans said they had started protecting themselves online in other ways within the past month. 5 percent, of adults said they had begun using secure messaging services like Signal, WhatsApp or Wickr. Some 16 percent said they had placed tape over the camera in their computers to block any unwanted spying, a trick advocated by Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and FBI Director James Comey. 21 percent said they had switched off the tracking capabilities of their Internet browsers; while 17 percent changed their user ID on social media networks like Facebook or Twitter and 10 percent unplugged smart TVs or other Internet-connected devices when not using them.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online in English in all 50 states. It included 3,307 American adults and had a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of 2 percentage points.
44. The reasons why some Americans have changed their way of online interaction are all of the following EXCEPT that ____.
A.they are more alert to privacy leakage in their emails
B.they are concerned about the exposure of their private information
C.they have suffered from the attacks online since last year
D.they have learned a lesson from the hacking of emails in the 2016 election
45. In Paragraph 4,the underlined word “orchestrated” is close in meaning to ____.
A.composed music to be played by an orchestra
B.planned and organized carefully
C.arranged for an orchestra concert
D.made happen unintentionally
46. We can infer from what Delene Rutledge said that ____.
A.nothing online about our privacy is absolutely secure
B.no one can ensure that the Internet is 100% unsafe
C.for common people inventing strong passwords matters
D.whether we have a safe online environment makes a difference
47. Which of the following methods that possibly help you protect your privacy online is NOT ever recommended in this passage
A.Disable the tracking function of the browsers.
B.Don't plug the digital electronic devices if not used.
C.Cover the camera with a tape if not used.
D.TVs or other online connected devices should be disconnected unless used.

Have We Forgotten How to Enjoy Our Free Time
Leisure is the price, right We work hard, so we want to play hard, we look forward to our time off, believing that the more leisure time we have, the better life will be. Enjoying that time — or savoring that end goal — should come naturally.
However, research shows that both having and deciding how to spend leisure time can be very stressful. ___48___ This pressure to maximize our fun might be getting in the way of our enjoyment of the leisure itself. What’s wrong
In fact, the way we perceive and value leisure has changed, problematically. Understanding this evolution and finding ways to change our attitudes surrounding leisure could help people to start enjoying themselves once again.
___49___ In ancient Greece, most of the labor was outsourced to slaves, while wealthier parts of society pursued other activities. Leisure was an active state of mind. Good leisure meant playing sports, debating qualified peers, and doing philosophy. Leisure was not easy, but it was supposed to be rewarding.
Today, however, a lack of leisure time operates as a powerful status symbol. In the workplace, being part of the long-hours working culture is seen by many as a badge of honor. This fuels the idea that we must maximize leisure’s enjoyment value and make every hour count when we actually do get some time off. This might not necessarily be a bad thing. ___50___ New research shows that we judge future positive events as both farther away and shorter than negative or neutral ones, leading us to feel as if a holiday is over as soon as it begins.
Fortunately, there are ways to help out. ___51___ For holidays. do one thing that is “completely crazy” in the middle, such as bungee jumping and one equally insane thing at the end, say, an extravagant meal, to elevate the entire experience. For most people, the persistent fear that we are not using our time “right” can derail the very purpose of leisure, because the only “right” way to have leisure is to relax, let your guard down, make good memories, and trust the pieces will fall into place.
A.But too much anticipation might set us up for a seemingly zero-duration holiday.
B.Experts recommend using the peak-end rule, which influences the way we remember events.
C.Equally, the way we chase the best leisure experiences has made recreation more stressful than ever.
D.People of today tend to feel enormous pressure to make the best use of their downtime by making the best choices.
E.Two thousand years ago, concepts of “work” and “leisure” was respectively associated with servitude (奴役) and freedom.
F.Some people work to acquire collectable experiences that are unusual, novel or extreme to make our leisure time productive.

Intermittent Fasting: A New Approach to Health and Longevity
In recent years, intermittent fasting (IF) has gained popularity worldwide as a lifestyle choice to improve health. Unlike traditional dieting, IF does not focus on what people eat but rather when they eat. The most common patterns include the 16/8 method, which limits food intake to an eight-hour window each day, and the 5:2 method, in which people eat normally for five days but restrict calories on two non-consecutive days.
Advocates of IF believe it benefits the body in multiple ways. Firstly, it may support weight management. By limiting eating hours, people often consume fewer calories, which helps reduce body fat. For example, someone who usually snacks late at night might naturally avoid extra calories by following IF. Moreover, fasting periods allow the body to use stored energy more effectively, promoting metabolic flexibility.
Secondly, IF may reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Studies suggest that fasting can lower blood sugar, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation—factors closely linked to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Some studies have even noted improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol, though more long-term evidence is still needed. Additionally, fasting may enhance cellular repair processes, such as autophagy, which removes damaged cells and promotes longevity.
Thirdly, IF is often easier to follow compared with strict diets that ban certain foods. Since no food groups are forbidden, individuals can enjoy a balanced diet during eating windows, making the approach more sustainable in the long term. For instance, a person can still enjoy family meals or social gatherings without feeling restricted, as long as these fall within the eating period.
Nevertheless, IF is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, children, or individuals with certain medical conditions may experience negative effects. Some people may also struggle with hunger, fatigue, or overeating during eating periods. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before starting an intermittent fasting plan.

七、书信范文
Dear Anna,
I’m terribly sorry to hear that you failed to be elected into the school student union and have been in low spirits recently.
I came across a famous saying by Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” To me, failure is just a chance to find our weaknesses. Churchill himself suffered many political defeats before achieving great success. Besides, many scientists experienced repeated failures before making breakthroughs.
This setback does not define you. Reflect on the experience and keep trying. I firmly believe you will succeed next time.
Yours sincerely,
Xu Jing
