Exhibitions — Shanghai Museum

My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. I was born missing my left hand. I’m sure it was quite jarring for my parents.
While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t laughed at for my limb difference. As kids do, I quickly learned to adapt. One of my earliest memories is my father trying to teach me to tie my shoes and I figured out a way to do it with one hand.
Not every challenge was that simple, however. The fact that I was different hit me hard during high school,when I started to hide my disability. Honestly, I was terrified that if I exposed my limb difference people would find me as ugly as I found myself. I spent the next two decades keeping my limb difference hidden at all times. Hiding feels a lot like lying, and the more you hide, the harder it becomes to stop hiding.
Interestingly enough, it was a date that convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference. When I was 38 years old, exhausted of hiding and so lonely, I met someone special. The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed.
While focusing less on hiding myself, I started looking around me and noticing other people with limb differences. For 25 years, I’d worked in nonprofit organizations working with young people, but accepting my disability sparked a passion in me to educate others about disability as part of diversity, through public speaking and writing. My mission now is to expand the conversation about disability and work with organizations so their employees can unhide and thrive.

Around one million cuneiform tablets (楔形文字泥板) have been found worldwide, on which cuneiform — the oldest known form of writing — was carved. Deciphering (破译) those cuneiform tablets helps know about the incredible stories of men, women and children in the early period of history. However, they are heavily weathered and thus difficult to decipher.
A new artificial intelligence (AI) software is now able to explain difficulttoread texts. It was developed by a team from Martin Luther University HalleWittenberg (MLU) and Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
Hubert Mara, a professor at MLU, and his research team came up with the idea of developing an AI system that applied 3D models. Instead of photos, the researchers first used 3D models of nearly 2,000 cuneiform tablets, including around 50 from a collection at MLU, achieving significantly more dependable results than previous methods.
The new system deciphers characters better than previous methods. In principle, the AI system works along the same lines as OCR software, which turns the images of writing and text into machinereadable text. “OCR usually works with photographs. This is no problem for ink on paper. In the case of cuneiform tablets, however, things are more difficult because the lighting conditions greatly influence how well certain characters can be recognized,” explains Mara.
The team trained the new AI software and did succeed in recognizing the symbols on the tablets. “We were surprised to find that our system works so well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered,” says Mara.
The work by the researchers makes a major step forward in the study of ancient writing systems and opens up many new lines of scientific exploration. Up until now, it can only translate symbols from two languages. However, a total of twelve cuneiform languages are known to exist. In the future, the software could also help to decipher weathered inscriptions (碑文), for example in cemeteries, which are threedimensional like cuneiform.

The rapid growth of online platforms is seriously impacting video rental stores. With increasing Internet speeds, downloading movies has become convenient. In 2012, some websites landed in the UK and a stream of streamers followed, resulting in the neartotal disappearance of video rental stores.
However, it wasn’t always like this. After the Video Home System (VHS) came to the UK in the late 1970s, a number of video rental stores showed up. One of the world’s leading video rental chains opened its first British branch in South London in 1989. At its height, there were more than 800 branches in the UK. For years, these shops could be seen everywhere.
The remaining owners remember this golden age of rental well. “On a weekend, we would have six staff and it would be continuous service. But when affordable DVDs came into play, the scene changed.” AllStar Video owner Colin Richards recalls. Snips’ owner, Dave Wain, is among a small group of movie supporters who refuse to let video rental fade to black. Alongside Snips, just two other original video rental stores still stand. The stores offer something extra.
“We can come in for a DVD and spend a good half hour meeting different people and chatting about films,” one customer called Andrew says. “Every person who rents a film from us gives us a review of it when they bring it back. We really appreciate it.” says Wain.
Standing in Snips, there are two great joys. First, the decisionmaking process: the arrangement of DVD covers draws the eyes in a way that online movies cannot match. Then, there’s something truly magical about physical media: the process of taking out a DVD, the artwork, and the DVD menus make viewers truly enjoy themselves.
