Every other week, more than two dozen boys walk into Lewis C. Cassidy Academics Plus School in West Philadelphia, wearing suits, neckties, and dress shoes. At the heart of all this is Dwayne Eric Frazier, a teacher and retired firefighter. He built the DYG club from scratch, transforming it from an after-school initiative into a registered nonprofit dedicated to impacting lives well beyond the classroom.
Growing up in North Philadelphia, Frazier’s father taught him how to tie a necktie, polish his shoes, and look people in the eye while speaking. Those lessons stuck, following him through military service and through a 26-year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department.
DYG’s roots go back to 1996, when Frazier coached a youth basketball team called the “Distinguished Gentlemen” and used the sport to develop manners among Philadelphia children. The idea stayed with him, and in 2021, with support from a volunteer, he formalized it as an after-school club.

Water shortages, rising temperatures, and droughts caused by climate change have an immense impact on agriculture — and today’s farmers are desperate to find solutions. In the western United States, some are turning to dry-farming, a form of agriculture that doesn’t require irrigation.
Dry-farmed plants take moisture (水分) stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from above. All farmers need is a wet, rainy season, followed by a dry growing season, as well as some methods like placing a layer of mulch (覆盖物) on top of soil to keep moisture, spacing plants more widely, and planting earlier in the season.

Dry-farming is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can save farmers thousands of liters in water every season — and help maintain a climate-resilient business. And the best part Dry-farmed produce is praised for tasting better than irrigated crops, and crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, squash, corn, watermelon and even grapes, are excellent candidates for dry-farming. Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters. Scientists have noticed that gap for years among individual species living in certain cities. What no one had tested was whether it held worldwide — across different continents, species, and animal classes.
A new analysis of 80 studies just asked that question, and the answer was more consistent than researchers expected. A team led by Dr Tracy Burkhard, an assistant professor of biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, pulled together findings from 80 separate field studies of urban and rural animals. It turns out that the distinction between the old city mouse and country mouse is a global one.
Urban animals came out, on average, more risk positive or more daring than their rural counterparts (对照) in every region the researchers tested. What the team found was a similar global pattern — urbanization changes behavior in similar ways across very different places. Urban animals defended territory more aggressively, investigated new objects more readily, and moved through space more actively than their rural counterparts. The same held true across mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and the limited insect data — wherever populations could be compared at all.
City planners, the researchers pointed out, will have to start treating animal behavior as part of the design problem. Connected green spaces, including parks, planted strips, and wildlife corridors, help urban animals mix with rural ones. That movement maintains gene flow, the genetic exchange that keeps isolated city animals from drifting further from their rural counterparts.
