Unit6 Crossing Cultures
Crossing Cultures
Every day, we communicate with people from different cultures. Sometimes we may feel confused or even make mistakes because different cultures have different customs. Understanding cultural differences is not only interesting but also necessary for us to build good relationships with people around the world.
Greetings around the world
People have different greeting ways in different countries. Chinese shake hands when meeting others. Japanese bow to show respect, and the deeper the bow, the more respect they show. In many Western countries, people hug or kiss friends and family on the cheek. In Thailand, people put hands together and bow slightly, which is called the "wai". Different greetings stand for different cultural values.
Table manners matter
Eating habits vary greatly across cultures. Chinese use chopsticks, respect elders by letting them eat first and offering food to others. Westerners use knives and forks, and it’s impolite to make noise while eating. People in some Middle Eastern countries eat with their right hand, for the left hand is unclean. Most Indians eat with hands and use bread to pick up food. Learning local table manners helps us avoid embarrassment abroad.
Festivals show culture
Festivals are a window of culture. The Spring Festival is China’s most important festival, with family gatherings, big dinners and red packets. In the US, Thanksgiving is a harvest festival with turkey and pumpkin pie. India’s Diwali, the Festival of Lights, includes lighting lamps, setting off fireworks and exchanging gifts. Every festival has unique cultural meanings.
Learning from cultural differences
Cultural differences are not problems, but opportunities. Meeting people from different cultures helps us learn new food, languages and thinking ways. The more we know other cultures, the better we understand our own. Cultural differences make the world colorful.
Conclusion
Crossing cultures is an exciting journey that broadens our minds and enriches our lives. We should be open-minded and respectful to other cultures. Just as the saying goes: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Dear Tom,
Welcome to China! I totally understand you feel worried about cultural differences. Don’t worry, I’m here to help you.
There are some basic Chinese manners for you. First, we usually shake hands to greet each other. Second, we use chopsticks for meals and it’s polite to let elders eat first. Third, if you meet the Spring Festival, you can get red packets with good wishes.
I suggest you watch local people’s behavior and follow them. The more you experience Chinese culture, the more you will love it.
Wish you a wonderful time in China! Looking forward to seeing you.
Yours,
Li Ming
