Answer the questions.
1 Why does the writer start by describing the old man in the
rice fields
The writer starts by describing the old man in the rice fields to catch readers’ interest. It helps readers picture Yuan Longping clearly and shows that he worked hard in the rice fields every day.
Answer the questions.
2 What's the meaning of "like a bird going after the warmth
of the sun" Why did Yuan compare himself to a bird
It means Yuan Longping travelled around China and never stopped working for his dream. He compared himself to a bird because birds fly to warm places in winter. Rice also needs warm weather to grow. So, just like a bird following the sun, Yuan kept moving to warmer places to study rice and never gave up.
Answer the questions.
3 What does the writer mean by "his dreams live on"
It means Yuan Longping died, but his ideas and dreams continue. His rice and his spirit still help people today.

Deep in the poor mountains, a woman has spent most of her life helping young girls. Her name is Zhang Guimei.
Zhang Guimei was born in Heilongjiang in 1957. When she saw lots of girls in mountain areas could not go to school because of poverty, she felt very sad. She dreamed of building a free high school for those girls so that they could get education and have a better future.
She believed deeply that education could change people’s lives. However, it was easier said than done. She met all kinds of hard problems. Though she suffered from many illnesses, she never stopped. She kept working hard day and night and finally made her dream come true.
Zhang Guimei is getting old, but her dreams live on. Large numbers of girls from the mountains have graduated from her school. Today, she is remembered as a modern day hero. Her example continues to encourage more people to help those in need.
