They all prove that difficult environments cannot stop life from shining. To give life meaning, we need a strong, warm purpose greater than our own small troubles.
What can we learn from them
Further thinking
Millie and David are talking about life lessons inspired by plants. Listen to the tape and answer the questions.
Listening
1. What kind of plants is David referring to
2. What life lesson does it teach us
3. What kind of plants is Millie referring to
4. What can we learn from it
Bamboo.
It teaches us not to give up when we meet difficulties. We can carry on like the bamboo till the hard time passes.
Pine trees.
Pine trees remind us to stay strong and hopeful during hard times.
David: Did you know that plants can teach us a lot about life
Millie: Yes, that's true. We can learn so much from them.
David: Bamboo is a good example. It's so strong that even a typhoon cannot easily break it.
Millie: So it is. It teaches us not to give up when we face difficulties. We can carry on like the bamboo till the hard time passes.
David: Exactly. The same is true of pine trees. They stay green all year round, even in the cold winter.
Millie: I agree. Pine trees remind us to stay strong and hopeful during hard times. As the poet Shelley wrote, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind
David: That's true.

They remind us to stay modest and peaceful. We can keep a pure, calm heart and never chase vanity.
Orchids
Orchids grow quietly in quiet valleys, with gentle and elegant flowers. They do not compete with other plants for praise.
e.g. Carry on as usual while I’m away.
我不在时,照常工作。
1. We can carry on like the bamboo till the hard time passes.
我们可以像竹子一样继续努力,直到困难的时刻过去。
短语 carry on 意思是“继续做,坚持干”。
Language points
2. As the poet Shelley wrote, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind
正如诗人雪莱所写:“冬天来了,春天还会远吗?”
雪莱(Percy Bysshe Shelley),英国著名的浪漫主义诗人,以《西风颂》等充满激情与想象力的诗作闻名。这里引用的是《西风颂》("Ode to the West Wind")中的一句。原诗中 Winter 和 Spring 的首字母大写,以拟人化的手法突出 “冬天” 和 “春天” 的象征意义。
