Peru is famously known as “Land of the Incas”. A trip to Peru has been on my wish list for quite a while. It was finally time for me to visit the country.
My first day started in Lima, the capital of Peru. I met with the G Adventures representative (代表) here about the tour. G Adventures is an organization that helps you to connect with other likeminded people in small groupbased travel adventures. They played a big part in helping to make Peru an unforgettable experience for me! In Lima, my representative discussed the plan of my tour, and I also had the chance to explore Lima in my own time, with many activities, including a city tour, show, biking tour, and more.
Day two had me taking a flight from Lima to Cusco. Many people visit Cusco for shopping but for me, the main reason for spending a day or two in Cusco was to acclimatize (适应) to the altitude (海拔). As I’d decided to reach the wonder of Machu Picchu, acclimatizing became important to avoid altitude sickness. I was happy to spend a day exploring Cusco. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Today, it’s famous for its artists, paintings, clothing and traditional instruments. There’s something for everyone in this city.
The day finally came! Day three had me enjoying a lovely guided visit to Machu Picchu at sunrise. I had free time to explore the city on my own as well as with my guide. It was a lot to take in! I had to stop for a moment and felt the energy of such an ancient city. The history here was unbelievable and I will never forget my time here for as long as I live!

Among the around 40 million adults in the U.S. who have hearing loss, most don’t use hearing aids. This means they may be missing out on more than just good hearing. Agerelated hearing loss — if not dealt with — can take its toll when it comes to physical and mental health, speeding up memory loss, for example.
Dr. Janet Choi, a doctor with Keck Medicine of USC, wanted to evaluate (评估) whether getting hearing back with hearing aids may increase the chances of living longer.
Choi and her team tracked the health condition of nearly 1,900 adults who had been shown to have hearing loss during screenings. The people who were surveyed completed questionnaires (问卷调查) about their use of hearing aids. “The group of patients who were using hearing aids regularly (定期地) had a 24 percent lower risk of mortality (死亡率) compared to the group who never use hearing aids,” Choi says. “We were surprised! We have found that not dealing with hearing loss can hurt our health. But we did not expect such a big difference in death risk.”
But the findings do not prove that hearing aids lead to longer life directly. It could be true that people who often use hearing aids are more likely to avoid loneliness and stay more active, which could explain why they live longer.
However, Choi says it’s surprising how few people with hearing loss wear hearing aids regularly — just 12 percent, according to her study. She adds another surprising finding is that the people in the study, who had hearing aids but didn’t use them regularly, were as likely to die early as those who never used them. So, if you have hearing aids sitting in the back of a drawer, not being used, Choi says, try them again.

A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “most powerful” language of an area, but is still learned by children in their homes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending on the surrounding social context. English, for example, is often a primary language, but could technically be a heritage language if someone’s Englishspeaking parents moved from, say, the United Kingdom to Japan
Heritage languages can be someone’s native language, but the two terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language or languages a person learns when they’re very young while heritage languages can be determined by a broad range of social and cultural factors. Usually, people speak their native language very well. Someone’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, however. Some people may master it well because they learned it a lot when they were children, while others may speak it but not read it, and still others may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has over 56 million Spanish speakers, and a large part of those are heritage learners of the language. A research found that the percentage of people who report speaking Spanish “well” drops from 91 to 82 for firstand secondgeneration immigrants (移民). While that might seem small, it gets much more obvious after that, with thirdand fourthgeneration immigrants dropping to 47 percent.
There are a couple of reasons why heritage languages — and Spanish in particular — tends to drop off from generation to generation. The first one is that the heritage language is less important to get around in society. When a person needs the majority language to go to school, get a job and interact with most people around them, it’s not surprising that the heritage language might seem less important. Another reason is some parents encourage their children not to use their heritage language. It’s unfortunate but true that speaking another language is still a cause for discrimination (歧视) today.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting from generation to generation, but it’s not only a story of decline (衰弱). There are countless people in the world who go out of their way to learn their heritage languages — some learn the heritage language later in life — and help others to do the same. If you’ve ever thought about reconnecting with a heritage language, it’s never too late to get started. There’s no time like the present.
