Four great museums in the world
Acropolis Museum
Devoted to the Parthenon and its surrounding temples, the Acropolis Museum in Athens is consistently rated as one of the best museums in the world. Designed by New York’s Bernard Tschumi, with local Greek architect Michael Photiadis, it is the ideal home for the ancient artefacts (手工艺品) that were found in and around the Acropolis.
State Hermitage Museum
If you looked at every object in St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum for one minute each, it would take 11 years to see everything! Highlights include a 200-year-old clock and Impressionist masterpieces, but make sure to take plenty of pictures of the building too.
Instituto Inhotim
The Instituto Inhotim in Brumadinho only opened in 2002, but has already firmly established itself on the international museum circuit. Spreading across 140 hectares (公顷) of Brazilian forest, it’s as much a botanical garden as it is a contemporary art museum. It has filled its gardens with sculptures by Olafur Eliasson and Yayoi Kusama.
Rockbund Art Museum
Situated in the historic Royal Asiatic Society building in Shanghai, the Rockbund Art Museum regularly exhibits great works from China’s contemporary artists, as well as international shows such as the annual Hugo Boss Art Award. Despite being updated by British architect David Chipperfield in 2007, the building still maintains the minimalist style of its original 1930s design.

San Francisco’s Chinatown is a beautiful, touristfriendly neighborhood. I’d visited Chinatown a few times while growing up in Northern California, but never as an adult who could fully dive into this unique neighborhood until recently. So I decided to go to San Francisco, curious to explore Chinatown’s amazing shops and designs from a new perspective.
My afternoon in Chinatown began at Clay Street. I was traveling with my husband, Ryan, who had never been a tourist in San Francisco before, so it made sense to see where our adventure would take us! We took the downhill path on Clay Street and within a few steps, saw Hang Ah Street.
More of a walkable alley (小巷) than a street, Hang Ah was fairly empty except for a few back doors. We were visiting toward the tail end of the MidAutumn Festival, so the alleyway showed us our first view of those special traditional Chinese lanterns that Chinatown has become synonymous with (密不可分的). Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure.
We continued down Clay Street, not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. We thought Hang Ah was beautiful, but Waverly Place completely stopped us in our tracks. I still remember the look on Ryan’s face; he was completely taken aback, with widened eyes and a camera in hand capturing every moment.
Walking down Waverly, we then heard the sound of wooden instruments coming from what appeared to be a music school. Even though I’d been to Chinatown before, there was something wonderful about this day, this street, this music and of course, the person I was traveling with who made it even more special.

In his book “Second Act”, Henry Oliver explores the potential of those later years for something more than wisdom or the giving of valuable advice.
Combining biographical (传记的) descriptions with scientific research, Mr. Oliver tries to understand the nature of the late bloomer (大器晚成者) and the potential for achievement later in life. We find out how the architect Frank Lloyd Wright began with the Pennsylvania house known as Fallingwater in his late 60s. And there’s Ray Kroc, who started with one McDonald’s restaurant in California when he was in his 50s and turned it into a global business.
Mr. Oliver’s appealing descriptions of individuals flesh out such datadriven studies: Taken together they form a collective illustration of how lateinlife periods of creative flowering are generated. One important factor: The subjects here have certainly not been inactive before their successes.
The title of “Second Act” itself proves to be underselling what the book has to offer: Mr. Oliver is really offering a guide to the broader principles that make a strong career. There is an importance to slow and steady progress, to showing up and doing the work. A chapter on aging explores how an important requirement of a successful career is simply to be consistent: to improve, to try new things, and to keep creating output. Achievement, he suggests, “isn’t reliant just on our mental ability staying high but on whether we choose to keep using and adapting the capacity we have.”
So too, when we think about our careers — and our lives more broadly — we must adopt a humble attitude: We cannot predict the shape and path of our careers, so we must make space in our lives for chance encounters, various kinds of luck, and nonlinearity (非线性) to work for us, rather than against us. This shows the idea of the “chaos theory of careers,” according to which small influences can have an outsize and unexpected impact, and so we must be ready to make use of them.

Human noise pollution is increasing and affecting ecosystems worldwide. Most of the research on the effects of noise on wild animals has looked at how a population or species is affected, says Grace Blackburn, a PhD. candidate. However, individual differences may enable some animals to perform better than others.
In a new study, Blackburn and her coworkers focused on how differences in cognitive (认知的) ability influence individual responses to noise in a population of Australian magpies (喜鹊). These birds have been studied consistently since 2013.
First, the researchers followed 75 wild magpies for 20minute periods, noting all their behaviors and the presence of any humanmade noise. Next, they conducted playback experiments in which they broadcast magpie alarm calls with and without the noise of planes in the background to see how the noise affected individuals’ antipredator (反捕食者) responses. The final step was administering (实施) a cognitive test to the magpies. The researchers used an associative learning task in which the magpies had to associate a specific color with a food reward. “The smarter the bird, the quicker they learn this association,” says Blackburn.
From their observations, the researchers saw that loud humanmade noises (such as planes) resulted in changes in the magpies’ behavior. In the presence of noise pollution, the birds searched for food less, were less efficient at finding food, sang less and spent more time being on guard.
However, Blackburn found that cognition influenced how magpies responded to plane noise. Birds that performed better in the associative learning task were able to maintain their normal responses to alarm calls, even when those calls were played with noise.
“This is the first time that cognition has been linked to the ability of an animal to deal with humanmade noise,” Blackburn says. As the human population continues to grow and expand, understanding the role of cognition in how animals deal with environmental changes could prove useful in helping protect not only Australian magpies but other affected wildlife.
