Steve Bate is a Paralympic cyclist — with the medals to prove it. He picked up two golds and a bronze at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, and completed the set with a silver at the Tokyo Paralympics. Bate was diagnosed（诊断）with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in 2011, a condition which could eventually cause him to go blind.
But rather than holding back his thirst for adventure, his diagnosis inspired him to push on. He battled depression after receiving the news, but grew to accept it — and then quickly became determined to make the most of the vision he had, while he had it.
That was what led Bate to tackle El Capitan, one of the most famous rock formations in the world, rising more than 3,000 feet straight up. “The scariest part of El Capitan was finding the way,” Steve says. “I took a route that’s usually pretty clear. If you have normal eyesight, you can’t really get lost. But for me, the scariest thing was worrying I’d get stuck somewhere I couldn’t find my way back from.” Finally, Bate made it through the hardest part of the climb and reached the top of El Capitan. “Pulling myself over the top felt amazing. It made me believe I could do anything,” Steve says.
A month before climbing El Capitan, Bate had attended a Talent Identification day for British Cycling. And soon, he was admitted to a program which would lead him to the Rio 2016 Paralympics. “I was back learning,” Steve says. “For El Capitan, I had to research everything on my own. At British Cycling I could go to anyone and ask, and they would give me the best advice — whether it was on nutrition, training or strength. I loved it.”
Although going blind still frightened him in many ways, Steve Bate said he had come to see it as a huge challenge — and as an opportunity to reach his full potential, which excited him most.

For example, on an app called Forest, the longer you stay off your phone, the more virtual trees grow; eventually, the firm plants a real tree in your honor. Some people are even switching back to “dumb phones” — oldfashioned mobiles without touch screens — which are now seen as a cool and wise choice.
The reason behind this trend is digital overload. Many young adults feel they must always be reachable and always be connected. According to a survey, nearly 40% of young people sleep with their phones next to them. This constant connection can lead to brainrot — a term used to describe the mental exhaustion caused by spending too much time online.
