Food Waste Action Week
This year, we are taking part in the Food Waste Action Week, looking at ways to reduce the amount of food we throw away. It has been proven that creating and sticking to a meal plan can cut food waste. You can take part by sending in your weekly menu plans, and the best will be published on our Socials pages. Keep your eyes peeled and we will be posting some great ideas for using up leftover food from great soups to homemade hair conditioner!
Simpler Recycling
Did you know that from March 31, all student halls across the country will be required to separate food waste This means that instead of unused food going to landfill and producing greenhouse gases as it rots, it will be sent to treatment plants where it will be made into biofuel. There will be lots more information on what can and can't be recycled coming soon. If you have any questions just ask your site teams — we're here to help!
Earth Hour
Started in Sydney, this now global event asks us to switch off lights and electrical items for an hour on 22 March from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and enjoy the peace and quiet. No competitions for this, just take a positive step to join a global movement and help tackle climate change!

More than 20 years ago, if someone had told Chao Ziyi and Chao Ziwei — two brothers from Henan, who earned their living by making large bowls — that one day they would become artists, they would have laughed it off.
But life often takes unexpected turns. Today, the brothers' ceramic works are exhibited both in China and abroad. Although the brothers have never studied art in a formal school, they have created their own unique ceramic style. They also lecture at Jingdezhen Ceramic University in Jiangxi. An exhibition now underway at the university's art museum tells the story of their artistic path, showing how these two craftsmen entered the world of ceramic art with help from professional artists and teachers.
The exhibition features more than 1,500 works, with a great variety of subjects — books, shoes, tractors, old gatehouses, and animals. Ceramics, deeply connected to Chinese tradition, become a way for them to express personal memories and share social experiences in a modern way.
The brothers still do every step of the ceramicmaking process themselves, just as they did in their early years in the family trade. Over time, they have continued to challenge themselves, exploring new sizes and structures. By copying the textured look of bronze and rusted iron, they give their works a fresh, contemporary feel.
Professor Lyu Pinchang, an artist who once guided them at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, says the brothers have moved from strict control of technique to embracing uncertainty, which helped them understand ceramics more deeply. He adds that they have always stayed true to their work — whether making bowls in the past or creating art now — and their devotion sets a great example for young students.
Rising from humble beginnings as bowl makers, the Chao brothers have brought a renewed spirit of craftsmanship into contemporary ceramic art.
24. What was the Chao brothers' life like over 20 years old
A. Ordinary.
B. Adventurous.
C. Colorful.
D. Ambitious.
25. What do we know about the exhibition on show
A. It reflects their skills of modern art.
B. It covers a wide range of subjects.
C. It tells their memories of hard life.
D. It shows their preference of nature.
26. What does Professor Lyu Pinchang think of the two brothers
A. Innovative and devoted.
B. Curious and productive.
C. Determined and brave.
D. Kindhearted and strict.
27. What can we learn from the two brothers' story
A. Life is a struggle, not a race.
B. Love breaks down barriers.
C. Every trade has its master.
D. Education is the key to success.

A glance around the things we have purchased at some point in our lives reveals a familiar truth:not everything in our possession is being put to good use. The smartphone that got put away when we bought ourselves the newest model, the car that only gets used at the weekends, or even the guest room in our house that somehow got turned into a storeroom. These underutilized possessions are more common than many realize.
Yet what appears useless to one person can be a valuable resource to another. With the advent of the internet, digital platforms have enabled individuals to generate income by sharing or renting out such dormant assets, giving birth to what is now known as the“sharing economy”. This transformation allows idle resources to be reactivated for mutual benefit.
Consider parents with young children. Previously, they might have been reluctant to set up a stall at a local market to sell outgrown baby clothes and equipment. However, online marketplaces now permit them to sell or even rent out these items, thereby recouping part of their investment. The same logic applies to spare rooms and idle cars, which can be rented out through specialized platforms.
Businesses have also recognized the profitability of this panies such as Airbnb act as middlemen, enabling people to rent out unused accommodation for profit. Similarly, Uber encourages individuals to use their personal vehicles as taxis to earn extra income. These examples illustrate how the sharing economy turns inactive assets into revenue sources, benefiting both providers and users.
This shift is not without criticism. Unlike authorized businesses, unlicensed individuals are not bound by consistent rules, which can lead to variable quality of goods and services and an increased risk of fraud(诈骗). Furthermore, legal disputes over property damage may arise. Nevertheless, in today's consumerist society, the expanded opportunities to share or sell unwanted goods may reduce overall consumption and lessen environmental damage.
28. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1
A. People often buy unnecessary things.
B. Our necessities are frequently upgraded.
C. We waste a lot unintentionally at times.
D. Much of our property is not fully used.

C. The popularity of computers.
D. The wide use of cell phones.
30. What does the underlined word “recouping” possibly mean in paragraph 3
A. Donating.
B. Increasing.
C. Recovering.
D. Securing.
31. What is the author's attitude to the popularity of the sharing economy
A. Favorable.
B. Intolerant.
C. Doubtful.
D. Unclear.

Science fiction is gradually turning into reality. Researchers at Zhejiang University have developed stable selfluminous(自发光) plants, a sustainable technology that brings new possibilities for ecological construction and urban development.
The study originated from a scientific inquiry. Unlike some animals and tiny living creatures that can produce light naturally, common plants lack the ability of selfluminescence. Earlier attempts to create glowing plants had obvious limitations. Fireflygenebased systems needed expensive external chemicals and only produced weak light, while bacterial luminescence tools limited plant growth and applied to few plant species.
To overcome these drawbacks, the team drew on the luminescence mechanism of glowing mushrooms and achieved a key breakthrough. They introduced four optimized enzyme(酶) genes into plant genomes. Relying on caffeic acid (咖啡酸), a natural substance in nearly all plants, the plants can produce green light through enzymatic reactions. The reaction products can be recycled into caffeic acid, allowing continuous and stable luminescence without extra energy or chemical input, and it will not affect normal plant growth.
To improve brightness and stability, the team put forward a “supply increase and loss reduction” approach. They built a new biological pathway to generate more lightgenerating materials and adopted machinelearning analysis to block internal biological reactions that consume caffeic acid. The upgraded secondgeneration plants are over 20 times brighter than the original versions, and removed leaves can remain luminous for three days, marking a major practical breakthrough.
This innovative technology has wide application prospects. It converts solar energy into biological light with extremely low energy consumption, promising to replace part of traditional lighting and cut power waste. It can also be widely applied in urban landscaping and cultural tourism industries. Additionally, its stable luminous signals can support biomedical research in tracking biological changes, providing sustainable solutions for social and scientific development.
32. What can be inferred about the earlier attempts from paragraph 2
A. Successful.
B. Highefficient.
C. Fruitless.
D. Ineffective.
33. What determines the stability of lightgenerating
A. The supplies of caffeic acid.
B. The time of enzymatic reactions.
C. The input of external chemicals.
D. The quality of enzyme in plants.
34. What did the researchers do to cut down the consumption of caffeic acid
A. Reduce the amount of plant leaves.
B. Stop some natural processes in plants.
C. Select highquality plant species.
D. Use genetic engineering technology.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the new technology
A. Its appeal to the public.
B. Expectations for future studies.
C. Its future applications.
D. The environmental benefits.

It was 2:30 in the early morning. The night was dark and quiet. Evans, a 16yearold boy, was hanging out with two of his friends near the Pascagoula River when they suddenly heard sharp, terrified screams from the water.
A car with three teenage girls had driven off the road and plunged into the river. The driver, Evans later learned, had blindly followed her GPS and made a wrong turn. The GPS had showed her to go straight, but the road ended at the river.
It was dark, and they could barely see anything in the distance. But Evans and his friends ran quickly to the river without hesitation. At first, they could only make out the girls holding on to the roof of the sinking car — the only part still above the water. They were crying for desperately help.
Without thinking twice, Evans tore off his shirt and shoes, threw down his phone, and jumped into the water. He knew the river was full of danger, but he didn't care. He swam to the first girl, and tried his best to keep her head above the water. With the help of his friends, he finally took her to the shore safely.
Just then, a police officer named Garry appeared. He jumped into the river to save another girl. But halfway back to the shore, the girl got scared and pulled the officer underwater. The officer was struggling to breathe, but the girl kept dragging him down. They were both in serious danger.
Though extremely tired, Evans jumped back into the water immediately. He grabbed the police officer and the girl and pulled them to a place where they could stand. The officer later said, “If Evans hadn't been there, who knows what would have happened ”

My Favorite English Proverb
My favorite proverb is “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” It reminds us to act promptly and avoid the trap of procrastination. I love this saying because it emphasizes the value of time and selfdiscipline. In daily life, delaying tasks often leads to stress and poor results. However, by tackling things immediately, we not only get more done but also build confidence and inner strength. This proverb encourages me to face challenges bravely, seize the moment, and turn possibilities into realities — one small step at a time.
第二节
Paragraph 1:
But there was still one girl in the river. Evans gasped for air, his muscles burning with exhaustion, yet he knew he couldn't stop. The third girl was barely visible, her weak cries fading as the car sank deeper. Without a moment's hesitation, he dove back into the dark water. The cold current tugged at him, and debris scraped his arms, but he pushed forward, guided by her desperate splashes. When he reached her, she was too weak to hold on, so he wrapped one arm around her waist and swam with all his remaining strength. Each stroke felt like a battle against the river, but the shore grew closer. Finally, his friends grabbed them both, pulling them onto solid ground. The girl coughed up water and sobbed with relief. Evans collapsed on the grass, chest heaving, but a faint smile crossed his face — everyone was safe.
Paragraph 2:
Evans's mother didn't criticize him for staying out too late. Instead, she rushed to his side, wrapping him in a tight hug, her eyes filled with tears of pride and fear. “You saved lives tonight,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I've never been prouder of you.” Word of his bravery spread quickly through the town, and the next day, local news interviewed the young hero. The rescued girls and their families came to thank him, their gratitude overflowing. Evans felt a warm glow in his heart — not for the praise, but for knowing he had made a difference. That night, as he lay in bed, he realized that courage isn't the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it. And he knew, without a doubt, that he would do it all over again.
