Every other week, more than two dozen boys walk into Lewis C. Cassidy Academics Plus School in West Philadelphia, wearing suits, neckties, and dress shoes. They shake hands and maintain eye contact while speaking. They are gentlemen carrying themselves with confidence that turns heads.
For many of them, this is their first time to wear a suit. One student puts it plainly, “The first time I ever wore a suit was when I joined the Distinguished Young Gentlemen (DYG). I think I look handsome in it.”
At the heart of all this is Dwayne Eric Frazier, a teacher and retired firefighter. He built the DYG club from scratch, transforming it from an afterschool initiative into a registered nonprofit dedicated to impacting lives well beyond the classroom.
Growing up in North Philadelphia, Frazier’s father taught him how to tie a necktie, polish his shoes, and look people in the eye while speaking. Those lessons stuck, following him through military service and through a 26year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department.
DYG’s roots go back to 1996, when Frazier coached a youth basketball team called the “Distinguished Gentlemen” and used the sport to develop manners among Philadelphia children. The idea stayed with him, and in 2021, with support from a volunteer, he formalized it as an afterschool club.
“Emotional intelligence is central,” as Frazier says. “It’s about manners, appearances, selfrespect and learning how to think before you speak, not reacting with emotions.” He describes the program’s core values as “respect, responsibility, reading, and resilience (复原力)”.
The dress code matters at DYG, but the curriculum goes much deeper. The club meets weekly after school, with students required to wear suits, neckties, and dress shoes every other week. Frazier models this daily, viewing disciplined dress as a silent statement: “When you dress right, you don’t have to say a word — it speaks for you.”

The grammar school boy from StratfordUponAvon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit to children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act out his works.
The study found that a dramabased approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and enhanced their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study.
The random trial involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) at 45 state primary schools. The children were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and were asked to write a letter as Romeo after being separated from Juliet. Before writing, the target group took part in a 30minute dramabased activity, while the control group did not.
It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.
O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding evident in the children’s writing, and that they showed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the dramabased process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added.
But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists O’Hanlon said more research would be needed but suggested that Shakespeare’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a massive expansion of language into children’s lives, which was combined with children using their whole bodies to bring words to life.

Most people have done it without thinking. You’re trying to hear a quiet sound, so you shut your eyes, hoping it will help you focus. It feels natural, almost automatic. Cut out one sense, and sharpen another. That idea has been around for a long time. But that instinct doesn’t always hold up, especially when the world gets loud. In busy, noisy settings, closing your eyes can actually make it harder to hear what matters. Instead of improving focus, it can push the brain in the wrong direction.
To see what really happens, researchers designed a simple but telling experiment. Participants listened to sounds through headphones and background noise played at the same time. Their job was to adjust the volume until each sound became just audible (听得见的). The volunteers repeated this task under different visual conditions. Sometimes their eyes were closed. Other times, they looked at a blank screen.
In later trials, the participants saw images related to the sounds, and finally, videos that matched what they were hearing. The differences were clear. The brain didn’t respond to sound on its own. What people saw changed what they could hear.
“We found that, unlike popular belief, closing one’s eyes actually weakens the ability to detect these sounds,” said Huang, an expert in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “On the contrary, seeing a moving video matching the sound significantly improves hearing ability.”
The participants struggled more when their eyes were closed, especially in noisy conditions. But when they watched something that matched the sound, their hearing improved. This wasn’t a small shift. It showed that vision and hearing work together more closely than many people realize.
The story changes in quieter settings. Without much background noise, closing your eyes can still help. In those moments, reducing what you see may allow the brain to focus more on very small sounds. But daily life rarely stays quiet. Traffic, conversations, machines, and constant movement fill most environments with noise. In those situations, keeping your eyes open may give the brain an edge.
