Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearingimpaired(听觉受损的) children for over 30 years, and thanks to her help and devotion, more than 20 of the over 80 students (she has taught) have received higher education.
Liu was born in Hengyang, Hunan Province in 1973. And her first interaction (交流) with people with disability was with one of her neighbors named Wang. Liu was a child then. One day in the winter, when Liu was playing in her house, Wang used sign language(手语) to communicate with her. But Liu could not understand what she was trying to say. It was Wang’s husband who told Liu that she wanted to make her a scarf(围巾).
“ Even as a child, I was moved by her kind gesture, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said. The incident left a deep impression on Liu. At the age of 14, she decided to major in teaching hearingimpaired students, and gained admission to Nanjing Normal University of Special Education. After four years, she graduated with a degree in special education and became a teacher at Hengyang Normal School of Special Education.
She remembers clearly that there were 14 students in her class. Although she was only 18 at the time, she treated the students as her children, and practiced sign language in front of the mirror for one to two hours every day till she mastered it. Apart from teaching her class together, she also had onetoone lessons with each student for 20 minutes every day.
For her contributions to society, especially her work with the hearingimpaired, Liu Lingli was elected as a deputy(代理人) to the National People's Congress, and took on the heavy responsibility of speaking for people with disability. Her story also inspired more people to do more for disabled people.

While people now buy gifts online or send digital red envelopes, the festival's true meaning — family reunions, making dumplings together, and honoring ancestors — stays unchanged. Technology adds new ways to celebration, but it can't replace the warmth of being with loved ones.
By mixing technology with traditions wisely, we can keep our cultural heritage alive. Let innovation help traditions grow, but not erase(消灭) them. This way, the treasures of the past will continue to inspire people today and in the future.

I have repeatedly written about the perils of social media use in past posts. One of the problems with social media is that it takes time away from other important activities, especially in our free time. With so much of our lives now online, perhaps it is not that surprising to hear that recent studies suggest reading is on the decline(下降) among Americans.
Studies over the past ten years show that only 16% of Americans report reading for pleasure. Researchers believe this decline in reading will hurt how people learn, their relationships, and their overall wellbeing.
In past posts, I’ve highlighted the benefits of reading for pleasure. Reading can make us more empathetic(同理心), improve our writing skills and focus. Nowadays, we’re overloaded by social media — scrolling(滚动) down the screen, trying to multitask, and replying quickly to every message or notification.
Reading for pleasure is an activity that allows us to take a break from screens. It can help individuals maintain the skills that are slowly being lost because of social media. Fall is a great time to start reading. I recently finished reading All the Way to the River by Elizabeth Gilbert, which tells the story of her life after the success of Eat, Pray, Love.
As we approach a new season, it could be the right time to start a more productive practice than staying connected to our smartphones. Turn away from the screen, and consider turning toward a new adventure.
