When I first arrived in this country, I realized that a great transformation (转变) would happen in my life both physically and mentally. People from different backgrounds working together at big companies often have trouble understanding each other’s cultures when they talk, whether in person or online. Just making your point clear isn’t enough. You have to truly understand crosscultural communication for efficient cooperation and business success.
Often referred to as intercultural communication, crosscultural communication is the study of how verbal and nonverbal communication takes place among individuals from different backgrounds, geographies, and cultures.
Since crosscultural communication is how people belonging to different cultures communicate with each other, there are bound to be conflicts between different cultures. One way to reduce these conflicts is strengthening diversity when hiring. When people from differing cultures work toward a common goal, the risk of offensive misunderstandings decreases, and the quality of work increases.
Companies with multicultural environments must focus on crosscultural communication skills to create a positive work culture. With thoughtful crosscultural communication, you can remove miscommunication and build strong relationships with people from different backgrounds. This multicultural communication enables every stakeholder to benefit from the free exchange of information. Strong intercultural communication can also help companies find opportunities and promote business growth. For example, employees from diverse cultural backgrounds and age groups can share unique insights about their generations’ consumer behavior, preferences, and habits. Their understanding of the target market can help you fuel business growth across markets.
The first and most commonly forgotten step in becoming culturally aware is to reflect on your own culture. In order to learn about others, you must first know about yourself. Perform a selfevaluation and consider the culture with which you identify, what aspects of that particular culture are connected with you, and what style of communication your culture has lent you. Reflecting upon your own culture will help you embrace cultural differences with an open mind. When surrounded by likeminded people, it’s easy to forget that what you do and how you act are not the universal norm. That’s why looking at yourself critically will improve your cultural awareness, thus promoting effective intercultural communication.

B.Employees try to create a positive work culture.
C.Employers set achievable goals for employees.
D.Employees from various cultures cooperate.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on
A.The significance of intercultural communication.
B.The methods companies use to improve harmony.
C.The understanding of multicultural environment.
D.The present situation global companies encounter.
11. What might the author continue talking about
A.The importance of reflecting on your own culture.

D.More examples of successful intercultural cooperation.

Whether you are traveling to a different country for business or study, you must always be prepared to experience and overcome cultural differences and language barriers. Here are a couple of tips on how to help bridge the gap between cultures.
Every country in the world, old or new, has a rich and storied history. They celebrate their own holidays, cook national dishes, listen to their own styles of music and wear clothes appropriate for their culture. Take some time to learn the history, art and customs of the country you’ll be visiting. Showing your knowledge of the local customs and history will make those around you realize you truly care about their culture.
Language are hard to master. You spent years in grade school learning all the grammar and intricacies (复杂) of English. Why not spend more time learning a whole new language — especially when so much of the world speak English already Even if you can only recite a couple of key phrases, it shows that you’re making the effort to bridge the cultural gap.
Unfortunately, no matter how much you research a country or how well you know the language, there will always be some culture shocks and confusion. Words, actions or gestures that are not offensive (冒犯的) to us can be very offensive to someone from another culture. When this occurs, it is important to stay patient. Working through these frustrations together will lead to a smarter and stronger bond between you and your friend from another culture.
When I learn a new language, or study the history of a culture I’m unfamiliar with, I think of it as exploring a new world. There are so many things that make each culture unique. You have to be open to trying and learning new things in order to fit in well in another country. Always try to think about how they see things from their cultural perspective.
All of this being said, there are so many similarities between people of all nations. We all laugh at the same physical comedy, groan when we have to clean up our pets’ messes and cry when we lose a loved one. After all, we are all humans.
12. What are you supposed to do to show your efforts to fit in
A.Develop an optimistic attitude.
B.Do research into the new culture.
C.Publicize its unique cultures.
D.Clear all the barriers in the way.
13. What does the author think of culture shocks
A.Overwhelming.
B.Abstract.
C.Depressing.
D.Unavoidable.
14. How does the author encourage us to be in paragraph 5
A.Openminded.
B.Suspicious.
C.Ambitious.
D.Insightful.
15. What is the most suitable title for the article
A.Participating in cultural communication.
B.Stepping out of your comfort zone.
C.Exposing yourself to different cultures.
D.Bridging the Gap between Cultures.

Ways to Adapt to a New Culture When Studying Abroad
While studying abroad is exciting, it can also take time to adapt to the culture you find there. 16
Do your research
Learning about the culture before you arrive can help you feel more prepared and less scared. Ask your university if there is a student you can connect with who can help you learn more about the culture. 17 Maybe try connecting with your roommate, if he/ she is a domestic student, to learn more about the norms. Read books, watch films, and talk to people who have already been there.
Be patient
If you have never traveled outside your country or region before, then things may be a little overwhelming at first. Remember that culture shock is real, and it can take some time to adjust to a new way of life. If you’re experiencing culture shock, don’t worry. Studies show that as many as one in five international students experience this when first exposed to their new study abroad experience. 18
Make friends with locals
One of the best ways to learn about a culture is to be friends with someone who lives there. 19 Through your experiences with them, they will introduce you to new customs, food, and music, and help you navigate (确定方向) your new home.
Be respectful
20 Show respect for the customs and traditions of the people you are visiting. This may involve euphemisms (委婉语) in the language, certain food preferences, or particular mannerisms (习性) involving hospitality. Whatever it may be, remember to always be respectful.
A.Remember that you are a guest in a new culture.
B.Sometimes things may take longer than you expected.
C.Here are some ways to help you adapt to a new culture.
D.Looking for online forums and articles can also help you.
E.Studying abroad can be a onceinalifetime opportunity.
F.Give yourself time to settle in and get used to your new surroundings.
G.This could be as simple as your roommate or a person sitting next to you in class.

Her teacher pointed out that a clear strategy ___37___ (need) to guide her creativity. Determined to improve, Sarah made her resolve ___38___ (tackle) her weaknesses. Growing up in Colorado, I prefer being outdoors. During my spare time, I enjoy swimming, climbing mountains and waterskiing. Although skiing was the sport I had never learned, I wanted to have a try. So when I recently got an invitation to a skiing trip in Deer Valley, I jumped at the chance. I didn’t think it would be that hard to learn. After all, I was fairly fit, and I used to waterski —that had to count for something, right
It turned out that there was not so much help. I told the coach I was “beginner level”, and I was grouped with some women who had skied only a couple of times before. At first, I learned how to put on my ski suit and control my speed and direction. With the help of the coach, I started to practice.
Once we mastered the basic skills, my coach led us to the green run —the easy slope (斜坡)for ski beginners. When I reached the top, I started down an easy green run with others in our group. “OK, this isn’t so bad! I'm doing it!” I thought at the start of the run. Then came a harder slope. I wanted to quit. However, my pride didn’t let me stop.

Dear Tim,
I’m more than delighted to know you are curious about China’s intangible cultural heritage. I feel really proud that the Spring Festival has been listed as worldintangible cultural heritage. Besides it, papercutting is also a treasure worth learning about.
Papercutting is a folk art with a long history. Skilled artists cut red paper into various patterns, such as flowers, animals and Chinese characters, which are often used for festivals and celebrations. It carries people’s best wishes for happiness and good luck.
I sincerely invite you to come to China to experience it in person. We can try making papercuttings together. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua

I began to ski down the hill. The moment I sped forward, I lost my balance. Before I could make any adjustment, I fell heavily onto the snow. My skis flew away and my knees hurt badly. Seeing this, my coach hurried over to give me firstaid treatment. Though I suffered slight injuries, I felt so discouraged and wanted to give up skiing completely.
But the accident would never stop me. After a short rest, I cheered myself up and decided to have another go. With the coach’s patient guidance, I practised again and again. Gradually I gained better control of my skis. Though I still fell from time to time, I didn’t fear any more. Finally, I managed to finish the run. I realized that nothing was impossible as long as we kept trying.
