COMMUNITY READING PROGRAM
Help foster a love of reading among children in our neighborhood! The Community Reading Program brings together volunteers and young readers to create meaningful connections through books. We operate across three local libraries and two elementary schools, serving children aged 5 to 12 from diverse backgrounds.
WHAT WE DO
Volunteers serve as reading buddies, spending oneonone time with children who need extra support. Each session lasts 45 minutes and includes shared reading, discussion, and fun literacy activities. We also organize monthly book clubs where children can explore stories together and develop critical thinking skills. During school holidays, we run special Reading Adventure events featuring storytelling, arts and crafts, and visits from local authors.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS
Volunteers aged 16 and over are welcome. Those under 18 must have the parent/guardian approval section signed. No teaching experience is required, but you should feel comfortable reading aloud and engaging with children. A required twohour orientation (培训) session will be provided before your first visit. All volunteers must pass a standard background check.
TIME COMMITMENT
We ask volunteers to commit to at least one session per week for a minimum of eight weeks. Sessions are available on weekday afternoons (3:30 pm5:00 pm) and Saturday mornings (9:00 am12:00 pm).

The train gave a highpitched warning, and the doors closed with a sharp sound. A passenger threw herself into the seat next to me, holding a bunch of shopping bags tightly against her chest. “Anyone sitting here ” she asked. “No, please sit,” I replied, wishing the train would start moving soon.

A new study has found that a lizard (蜥蜴) that once lived in forests has gone through genetic (基因的) changes to survive in city environments. The lizard’s official name is Anolis cristatellus. It is commonly found in Puerto Rico.
The team said they discovered the lizard had grown special scales (鳞片) that helped it climb more easily on smooth surfaces like walls and windows. It also grew longer legs in order to run faster across open areas. Research results were recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Kristin Winchell is a biology professor at New York University and the main writer of the study. She told The Associated Press, “We are watching evolution (进化) as it’s unfolding.” Winchell said as city development spreads out around the world, it is important to understand how organisms adapt to new environments. That way, she added, humans can design cities in ways that can support all kinds of animals.
The study examined 96 Anolis cristatellus lizards. The researchers compared the genetic makeup of lizards in forests to those living in Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, as well as two other cities. Scientists found that 33 genes were repeatedly linked to the city spread.
Wouter Halfwerk is an evolutionary ecologist and professor at Vrije University Amsterdam. He was not involved in the study. He told The Associated Press, “You can hardly get closer to a smoking gun,” meaning evidence or proof of something. Halfwerk said he was excited that the researchers were able to identify such rich evidence that the lizards had changed genetically to adapt to a different environment.
The study centered on adult male lizards, so it is unclear if females are changing in the same way or at the same rate as males. The researchers said it is also not clear at which point in a lizard’s life the changes happen.

Hundreds of millions of people turn to chatbots (聊天机器人) for advice, so it was only a matter of time before tech companies offered programs to answer health questions. Recently, a large tech company introduced a health chatbot that can analyze users’ medical records and wearable device data. Another company offers similar features.
Both companies say their programs are not a substitute for professional care and should not be used to diagnose illnesses. Instead, they can explain test results, help prepare for a doctor’s visit, or find health trends from medical records. However, before you talk to a chatbot about your health, there are several things to consider.
AI platforms are not perfect. They can sometimes provide bad advice, but the information they produce is more likely to be personalized and specific than a simple online search. Dr. Robert Wachter, a medical technology expert at the University of California, San Francisco, said, “I think that if you use these tools responsibly, you can get useful information.”
But if you have worrying symptoms (症状) such as shortness of breath, chest pain or a severe headache, skip the AI and seek immediate medical attention. Dr. Lloyd Minor of Stanford University said, “Even in less urgent situations, keep a degree of healthy doubt. If you’re talking about a major medical decision, you should never be relying just on what you’re getting out of a large language model.”
Privacy (隐私) is another concern. Health data shared with AI companies is not protected by the same law that covers doctors and hospitals. Users must understand they are facing completely different privacy standards.
Testing also shows chatbots can stumble. A 1,298participant study by Oxford University recently found that people using AI didn’t make better decisions than those using online searches. The lead author, Adam Mahdi, and his team found several problems. People often didn’t give the chatbots the necessary information to correctly identify the health issue. However, the AI systems often responded with a combination of good and bad information, and users had trouble distinguishing between the two.
