When I was sixteen, that summer my brother Andy and I hiked the Sierra Nevada in the back country near Lake Tahoe. Our parents had left us with two water bottles and instructions to stick to the trail. “Don’t get lost,” my mother shouted as the car pulled away. I nodded, not quite paying attention, because I had never been in high mountains before. I was eager for the experience.
We struggled up the switchback path, not used to strenuous (艰难的) activity in the July heat. We seemed closer to the sun. Andy and I emptied the bottles quickly into our throats, unfamiliar with moderation and conservation.
My brother and I walked around the lakeside. Our drinking supply was almost gone. The heat of the day had demoralized (使意志消沉) us. We sat on the edge of the wide lake, took off our shoes and bathed our tired feet.
We eyed the lake and began to question. “Should we jump in Are we allowed Should we get our clothes wet Is it too cold Will some great monster rise up and devour us ” We asked ourselves. We excused. And then, we walked slowly back through the cloudless summer gap, down into the valley. Why Why didn’t we jump in that lake It was clear, clean and wet. No one would have stopped us. We could have been cool and comfortable all the way home. But no.
At some point in our lives, we must learn this lesson: to dive into the lake, to be free, to follow our heart’s desires. When we are old and sitting by the peaceful lake in patient stillness, we can then abstain (避开) from jumping in. We can linger (留恋) in the perfect happiness of our lake memories, with nothing left undone.

17. What is the main purpose of the passage

Over the last decade, health insurance companies have started using AI algorithms (算法) to decide whether they will pay for treatments your doctor recommends. This is different from the AI doctors use for diagnosis (诊断) in that insurance AI focuses only on coverage and cost.
One of the most common examples is with prior authorization. Before your doctor can give you certain care, they must get the insurer’s approval for payment. The AI checks if the treatment is considered medically necessary and covered by your plan. It can limit the amount of care, like how many days you can stay in the hospital after an operation. If the insurance company denies coverage for a treatment your doctor says you need, you’ll face tough choices: appeal the decision (a slow process that rarely works), accept different treatment, or pay the very high cost yourself.
Insurers argue these algorithms help make decisions quickly and safely, avoiding unnecessary treatments. However, there is concern that they are often used to delay or deny effective care simply to save money. The systems analyze patient records, but insurers keep exactly how the AI makes its decisions completely secret. This secrecy is especially worrying because if an AI wrongly denies a claim very fast, the patient might get sicker or even die during the long appeal process.
Unlike medical AI tools reviewed by government agencies, these algorithms are mostly unregulated. Their inner workings are guarded as trade secrets. While some recent rules require insurers to consider individual patient needs, companies can still largely set their own standards without outside checks.
Some places have proposed laws demanding doctor oversight of these algorithms. However, most proposed laws still give insurers too much power to define medical necessity and don’t require independent testing for safety and fairness before the AI is used. Experts argue government oversight is essential. The agency that reviews medical AI could potentially take on this role. In the meantime, government regulators should require independent testing of insurance AI for accuracy and fairness. Efforts to regulate this insurance AI are beginning, but much stronger action is still needed.
18. What is the common use of AI algorithms used by insurance companies
A.Assisting doctors in diagnosing patients.
B.Approving the treatment given by doctors.
C.Providing care services for some patients.
D.Reducing administrative costs for hospitals.
19. How do insurers handle the decisionmaking process of their AI algorithms
A.They provide some effective solutions.
B.They help governments to regulate it.
C.They keep it private as trade secrets.
D.They require doctors to oversee.
20. What problem was mentioned about the AI algorithms in paragraph 4
A.It lacked regulation in most cases.
B.It didn’t work perfectly most of the time.
C.It hardly considered patients’ needs.
D.It was equipped with different standards.
21. What is a suitable title for the text
A.Regulatory Challenges and Solutions for Medical AI

The first hotel to change into a migrant shelter was the Row NYC, once a fourstar hotel in Times Square that advertised itself as “more New York than New York”.
The hotel was repurposed in late 2022, when Mr. Adams declared that the population in traditional homeless shelters had hit a “breaking point” absorbing more than 16,000 asylum seekers. And the city had the responsibility to house homeless people, including new immigrants, under a longstanding mandate (授权) known as right to shelter.
Desperate for more space, the city negotiated an initial $40 million deal with the Row, still in financial trouble, from the pandemic (疫情). The hotel received $190 a night per room to house migrant families with children in its 1,331 rooms.
As the pace of the migrant arrivals began to exceed 2,000 each week last year, more than 100hotels were turned into shelters.
The contracts with the city — totaling up to 1.04 billion — became a boom for hotels recovering from inactive tourism, filling a critical need for migrant beds even as they created a shortage of rooms for some travelers. Nearly two dozen hotels in Midtown Manhattan were removed from the tourist pipeline, transforming them into unlikely refuges in plain sight. Some drew special attention for robberies in Times Square last year that the police attributed to a small group of migrants living in the hotel.
It was Ingrid Henao’s second week in New York, but the parents were already diligently applying for work permits and jobs. Still, Ms. Henao could not shake a feeling of guilt that their stay in the hotel, tucked between the skyscrapers of Billionaire’s Row, was being funded by American taxpayers. They were getting free laundry service, their clothes sometimes returned, folded and placed in their room, as well as housekeeping. Uncomfortable, Ms. Henao would sometimes prevent servants from cleaning the room.
“We’re getting spoiled,” Ms. Henao said. “This was never my idea. I didn’t leave my country under the conditions for which we escaped.”
22. What does the author show by “more New York than New York”
A.The Row NYC was a cheap hotel.
B.People tended to live in the Row NYC.
C.Row NYC was a representative of city culture.
D.It’s amazing that the Row NYC was highest hotel.
23. What caused the appearance of the hotels’ turning into shelters
A.The government wanted to make money.
B.The tourism was booming and calling for better service.
C.Good conditions should be provided for the homeless people.
D.The pandemic hit the city and migrant families increased.
24. What longterm issue might hotel conversions cause
A.Rising crime in tourist zones.
B.Permanent tourist room shortages.
C.Chronic taxpayer resentment.
D.Migrant dependency on aid.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards the deed
A.Objective.
B.Optimistic.
C.Negative,
D.Indifferent.
