Jim Thorpe is one of the greatest athletes of all time: He had amazing athletic abilities and was wellknown during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity (逆境).
Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary athletic skills in his youth through hard labour. It was also in his youth that he learnt to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice(种族歧视). Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9, his twin brother passed away. A few years later, he lost both of his parents.
But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the 1912 Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of the garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out.
He still went on to win two gold medals — winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin(标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials(预赛). At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second.
At the Olympics, he also took part in the decathlon(十项全能运动). He finished first in two events, third in four events, and fourth in two more. Thorpe ended up finishing third in the world. He was undoubtedly a dominating force that couldn’t be stopped and just kept on going.
I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine now that professional athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.”
36. What do we know about Thorpe
A.He gained athletic skills through easy work.
B.His success was no guarantee of a better life.
C.His career brought him both gains and losses.
D.He suffered many hardships throughout his life.
37. Why did Thorpe wear more socks on one foot
A.To prevent the foot from injury.
B.To make the shoe fit the foot.
C.To stop the shoe from being stolen.
D.To protect old cuts on the foot.
38. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin
A.Loss of his own sports shoes.
B.A shortage of talent for the sport.
C.Lack of experience in the event.
D.A carefree attitude towards the event.
39. Which of the following can best describe Jim Thorpe
A.Kind and enthusiastic.
B.Genuine and creative.
C.Tough and strongwilled.
D.Selfless and goodtempered.
40. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain the history of the Olympic Games.
B.To describe the life and achievements of Jim Thorpe.
C.To discuss the problem of racial prejudice in sports.
D.To show how to overcome difficulties in life.

Progress is something that everyone looks forward to, whether in personal life or in society. It represents our ability to change and improve the way we live. Progress is often linked to better ways of doing things. However, this idea of progress holds true only if we embrace technology and continuously seek more efficient ways of doing things.
Yet, for many people, especially those who long for the “good old days”, progress inevitably comes with sacrifices. With the rise of new technology, efficiency has greatly munication, for example, has become much more efficient. Today, people can connect with each other instantly, no matter where they are in the world. With just a click of a button, we can talk or even see each other without leaving our homes. Personal visits, where we spend time together in real life, have become less common. With mobile phones and tablets, people often no longer make the effort to visit friends and family in person, even though facetoface interactions hold unique value in building closer relationships.
Another area where progress brings both benefits and challenges is in mass production. Factories today are much more efficient, thanks to machines and automation. This has allowed goods to be produced in large quantities with greater accuracy than human hands could ever achieve. However, the downside is that this efficiency often comes at the cost of the “personal touch”. Many items that were once handcrafted are now produced in factories. While mass production allows supply to meet demand quickly, it often leads to a decrease in quality. Handcrafted items, for example, are unique and full of character, but massproduced versions lack individuality and the same level of craftsmanship.
Despite these challenges, it is important not to view progress from a onesided perspective. In fact, progress has also allowed tradition to survive. Modern technology can help preserve old products and techniques, ensuring that traditional crafts are not lost. Through new technology, many old products can be revived and brought back to their original state.
Ultimately, it is people’s attitude towards progress that determines the influence technology has on society. Technology itself is flexible — it can be used in various ways depending on how we choose to apply it. The greatest challenges of progress come from those who are unwilling to adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use progress in a way that fits our needs, we can create a new future while still respecting the past.
41. According to Paragraph 1, what is necessary for progress to occur
A.Rejecting new ideas.
B.Holding on to traditional ways.
C.Pursuing comfort over innovation.
D.Accepting technology and advances steadily.
42. The examples in Paragraph 2 illustrate____________.
A.efficiency improvements often come with a price
B.technology presents few significant drawbacks
C.the “good old days” offered greater efficiency
D.facetoface interactions are unnecessary
43. What does the author say about mass production
A.It has lacked great accuracy.
B.It has increased product costs.
C.It has reduced individuality in products.
D.It has entirely replaced handcrafted items.
44. What is the author’s view on the relationship between progress and tradition
A.Progress often destroys tradition.
B.Progress can help protect tradition.
C.Progress weakens traditional values.
D.Progress and tradition cannot exist together.
45. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A.Technology must be applied in a fixed manner.
B.Progress should be adapted to meet societal needs.
C.People tend to look back on the past with deep regret.
D.The impact of technology depends on people’s attitude.
D
When I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I’d already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. Imagine my surprise when I published my nature photography and became a volunteer art teacher!
Unfortunately, my story is all too familiar to many people who come through my workshops and practice. Even more unfortunately, the vast majority of people were so discouraged in childhood that they cut off the creative impulse (冲动) in most areas of their lives. Their teachers, parents, or classmates convinced them they had no talent, so they gave up. The pain of failure was simply too great.
Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result Let’s consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we’ve at our disposal (处理) is the result of someone’s creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we’ve to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome.
Therefore, I’d urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. Children instinctively (本能地) know how to give over to the joy --- until someone teaches them otherwise! Let your creation be whatever it wants to be. See if it can lead you rather than the other way around. Let your unconsciousness come through, and let the expression of yourself be beautiful regardless of how it compares to anything else. After all, it’s yours, and no one but you could create it!

My favourite Museum
As far as I am concerned, my favourite museum is the Tianjin Museum, which enjoys a long history. It houses quantities of precious cultural relics showing local history and folk customs. It plays an important role in passing on local culture to the public.
It is popular among young people mainly because it holds various wonderful exhibitions from time to time. Not only can we admire valuable collections, but we can also learn much knowledge beyond textbooks. Visiting it helps enrich our sparetime life as well.
Museums are great treasure houses of human civilization. I sincerely hope that all of us can spare some time to visit museums to feel the charm of history and culture.
