History books are filled with warriors (战士) — male warriors, that is. Less referenced are the women who took up spears, bows, swords, and clubs to fight. Here’s a look at some of history’s women warriors out of this world.
Mulan in ancient China
The Disney movie Mulan has received enormous success. Mulan’s story goes back to the sixth century and was written in the 11thcentury “Ballad of Mulan”. In the eloquent poem, the girl took the place of her elderly father in the army, since he had no adult son, and she fought against invaders as a man for 12 years.
Boudicca: revenge against Rome
Boudicca, the queen of the Iceni of East Anglia, Britain, did not set out to be a warrior. But after her husband, the Iceni ruler, died in 60/61AD, the Romans whipped her and her daughters, and she had no choice but to make a stand. Boudicca raised an army and destroyed Camulodunum, Londinium, and Verulamium of Rome.
Joan of Arc: soldier of God
At the height of the 15thcentury Hundred Years’ War between France and England, a young peasant girl came to the rescue of France. Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was just a teen when in 1429 she approached the dauphin Charles, the heir to the French throne who had yet to be crowned (为……加冕) (the English held Reims, France’s traditional coronation site). She was given permission to raise troops and ride forth. Joan and her troops liberated the besieged city of Orléans, clearing the way for Charles Ⅶ to be crowned at last, giving France a rightful king.
Tang Saier: rebel leader
During China’s 15thcentury Ming Dynasty, Tang Saier, a young girl from Putai (presentday Shandong province), was taught martial arts by her father. Her world changed when she lost her parents, and then her husband, at a time when the emperor imposed hefty taxes and flood and drought ravaged the land. She raised a peasant army in 1420, successfully fighting Ming soldiers. In some accounts, she won one battle by creating a flying demon army out of paper dolls. At last she was defeated and fled, and was never found.

When Ma Jun was born, his parents noticed something unusual. His limbs were weak, and he couldn’t move or stand without help. While his peers ran and played, Ma could only sit in a wheelchair, watching in frustration. For years, his parents carried Ma on their backs to school, braving wind and rain.
In 2016, Ma passed his college entrance exams, but he faced a dilemma. With limited resources, his family couldn’t manage both sons’ education. Then Ma made a decision to stay home, sacrificing (牺牲) his own learning opportunity for his brother. This decision, though rooted in love, threw Ma into hopelessness. Longing to attend university and prove himself despite his condition, Ma instead found himself stuck in bed, feeling desperate.
The turning point came when a friend gave him a book, Shi Tiesheng’s bestseller I and the Temple of Earth. Shi, a famous writer who also uses a wheelchair, had transformed his struggles into profound literature. As he read, Ma felt a spark of hope lighting up his world. Shi’s vivid observations and unshaken hope inspired Ma deeply. He was struck by the realization that someone with similar struggles could find meaning and joy in life. Later, he started on a threeyear journey of writing the book The Green and White Stone Steps by recording his own life, pouring his heart and soul into the words.
In June 2023, Ma received unexpected good news that his book was one of 10 selected for publication through the project “Stars of Literature by Chinese Ethnic Writers”. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his literary journey. Then, the Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature announced this year’s awards, and Ma became the youngest winner of this year’s Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature in the prose category.
Having fought against the illness for many years, Ma never defines himself as a man to be pitied. “I don’t think my experiences are tragic. Everyone in this world suffers from something. For me, it’s physical; for some others, it’s emotional. We’re all fighting our own battles,” he says. Writing is not just a profession for Ma — it’s a lifeline, a way to connect with the world and leave behind a legacy of courage, sincerity and hope.
4. Why did Ma give up attending university
A.His parents didn’t want to support his education.
B.His brother showed a stronger desire to study.
C.His family was facing financial difficulties.
D.His physical condition prevented him from continuing his education.
5. What do we know about Ma’s book The Green and White Stone Steps
A.It was inspired by his friend.
B.It was finished in 7 years.
C.It was based on Shi’s personal story.
D.It got recognition in the literary world.
6. Which of the following can best describe Ma Jun
A.Talented and optimistic.
B.Selfless and honest.
C.Farsighted and patient.
D.Brave and confident.
7. What message does the text convey
A.Failure is the mother of success.
B.Chance favors the prepared mind.
C.Misfortune doesn’t define who you are.
D.He who laughs last laughs longest.

Glasgow University researchers have created a laser (激光) camera using AI and quantum technologies to remotely detect a person’s heartbeat, potentially changing health monitoring. Professor Faccio imagines various applications, such as setting up this technology in shopping malls or fixing laser heart monitors in homes. These monitors could be part of an extensive system tracking different health aspects, such as blood pressure and slight changes in movement, indicating early signs of conditions like Alzheimer’s.
Monitoring a person’s heartbeat from a distance holds significant value, as it can detect irregularities like abnormal heart rates, providing crucial warnings of potential heart issues. In contrast to the traditional use of stethoscopes (听诊器), this system overcomes limitations associated with proper stethoscope usage, such as the need for training and the potential reduction of heartbeat signals.
The system developed by Faccio and his team involves highspeed cameras which can record images at speeds of 2,000 frames per second. A laser beam is shone on to the skin of a person’s throat and the reflections are used to measure exactly how much their skin is rising and falling as their main artery (动脉) expands and contracts as blood is forced through it. These changes involve movements of only a few billionths of a metre.
Such acuity is striking, though on its own the tracking of these tiny changes would not be enough to track a heartbeat. Other, much larger movements occur on a person’s chest — from their breathing, for example — which would flood signals from their heartbeat.
“That is where AI comes in,” Faccio said. “We use advanced computing systems to separate out everything except the vibrations caused by a person’s heartbeat. We know the frequency range of the human heartbeat, and the AI focuses on that. The prime use of this technology — which we hope to have ready next year — will be to measure heartbeats easily and quickly outside hospitals. The benefits could be considerable.”
8. What can the laser camera be used for
A.Improving the usage of stethoscope.
B.Measuring blood pressure remotely.
C.Recording images of the human throat.
D.Detecting a person’s heartbeat from a distance.
9. What does paragraph 3 focus on as for this system
A.How it works.
B.Where it is used.
C.Whom it benefits.
D.What it is composed of.
10. Which is closest in meaning to “acuity” in paragraph 4
A.Consistency.
B.Complexity
C.Sensitivity.
D.Intensity.
11. What role does AI play in this system
A.To measure skin movements.
B.To recognize heartbeat vibrations.
C.To record images at high speeds.
D.To shine a laser beam on the skin.
D
History is written, read, told — but rarely ever is it smelled.
Historians and scientists across Europe have now gotten together with perfumers(调香师)and museums for a unique project: to reveal what Europe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries. A European street today may smell like coffee, freshbaked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds of years ago As part of this threeyearlong project called “Odeuropa”, the researchers want to find all the old scents(气味)of Europe — and even recreate some of this ancient smellscape: from the dry tobacco scents to the smelly canals.
To do this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained to go through historical texts, written in seven different languages, for any descriptions of scents. The AI will also be trained to detect images of objects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this information to create an online encyclopedia(百科全书)of smells from Europe’s past.
The encyclopedia will include the meaning of certain scents and will trace the stories behind scents, places and related practices, according to project leader Angela Lee. “This database will become a library for the smell heritage of Europe, enabling future generations to access and learn about the scented past.” The encyclopedia will also include descriptions of people for whom smell was important.
The researchers will then work with chemists and perfume makers to recreate past smells and figure out how to display the smells in museums and other historical sites. With current technology, almost every scent can be produced. “The more difficult part of the project will be to find descriptions of scents, because people haven’t always talked or written about them,” Lee said.
Scent plays a central role in our everyday life, even acting as a powerful time machine into our own past with its ability to activate longforgotten memories. But it’s also a key tool in telling the stories of others. “Scent gives us access to the past in a much more direct and emotional way than language and images,” Lee said.
12. Why did the researchers start the “Odeuropa” project
A.To rebuild a historical European street.
B.To make perfumes of traditional scents.
C.To find and recreate the smells of Europe.
D.To reproduce the scented past of Europe.
13. What will the AI do in the project
A.Collect smellrelated data.
B.Write interesting stories behind smells.
C.Detect objects by smell.
D.Describe smells in different languages.
14. Which of the following is the biggest challenge the project faces
A.Scents of the past are hard to keep.
B.Records of scents are rarely found.
C.Technology to reproduce scents is poor.
D.Display of smells in museums costs a lot.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The application of past scents.
B.The effect of scents on memory.
C.The role of scent in storytelling.
D.The value of understanding scent.
