Growing up in Canada, Benjamin Gulak took part in science fairs from a young age. Drawing had also been a part of Gulak’s life, and he even did an abroad program of fine arts study in Italy during high school. Driven to try selling his art, he worked with some leading art galleries (画廊) in London and Miami. Over time, he began connecting artists he’d met on travels from developing markets like Cuba, Egypt, and Brazil to the gallery owners he knew.
“The results were amazing because these artists were used to selling their work to tourists for $50, and suddenly they’re hanging work in a highend gallery and getting 5,000 pounds,” Gulak said. “It was the same artist but different buyers. Traditional galleries usually act as gatekeepers. Their picky selection (挑剔的选择) process is why many galleries usually show similar artists’ works. There are plenty of creative minds out there whose great art has never been seen outside of the local market.”
For a class project at college, Gulak built a system that tried to guess the types of art that would do well in a gallery. As a computer scientist, he later started NALA, which stands for Networked Artistic Learning Algorithm (算法). The company allows artists to upload works and choose their listing price. Gulak notes that not all art will sell. “If you’re making rock paintings, there may not be a big market,” he said. “Artists may price their work higher than buyers are willing to pay, but the algorithm works to put art in front of the possible buyers based on style preferences and price points.”
Gulak was once visiting Egypt when he discovered a beautiful painting on the street. Gulak found a local artist, Ahmed Nofal, and bought some works. Later, he brought Nofal to take part in World Art Dubai, an international art fair. The artist’s work was so wellreceived there. “When artists visit NALA, we discuss together, sharing ideas. These experiences also give me a unique view, pushing me to explore new partnerships and fresh projects,” Gulak said.
41. What can be learned about Benjamin Gulak
A.He prefers digital art to science.
B.He has a rich artistic background.
C.He supported himself in several ways.
D.He found creative ideas through travels.
42. What does Gulak say about traditional galleries
A.They aim at wealthy art collectors.
B.They have influenced popular art styles.
C.They leave many talented artists unnoticed.
D.They slow down international art exchanges.
43. NALA mainly benefits the artists by ______.
A.providing training in art marketing
B.setting higher prices for their works
C.getting their art into famous galleries
D.matching artworks with suitable buyers
44. What does Gulak suggest about his partnership with artists like Nofal
A.It is a difficult process.
B.It is a winwin situation.
C.It is a shortterm success.
D.It makes NALA well known.
45. Which of the following words can best describe Gulak
A.Calm and careful.
B.Funny and energetic.
C.Creative and supportive.
D.Confident and hardworking.

You may have been told to dress warmly before going outside in the winter; otherwise, you’ll “catch a cold”. But are you actually more likely to catch a cold when it’s freezing outside Put simply, yes: The occurrence of respiratory (呼吸道的) infections, such as the common cold, rises in temperate regions (温带地区) during the winter.
During the winter, we typically spend more time indoors, meaning we’re spending more time closer to other people, potentially in places with poor air ventilation (通风), which makes viruses more likely to spread within the population. But beyond these behavioral changes, scientists have shown that there are other reasons that explain why we get more colds in winter.
Epithelial cells (上皮细胞) that line the nose are the first barrier against viruses breathed in from the air. Normally, in response to viral infection, these cells increase a secretion (分泌物) — called extracellular vesicles — which can help clear viruses before they can enter the rest of the body. These vesicles also contain miRNAs that prevent viruses from making copies of their genetic material. However, in colder weather, when the temperature inside the nose drops from 98.6 to 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏度), the system fails and respiratory viruses effectively double their capacity to reproduce.
These findings imply that wearing facial coverings, such as masks, may be beneficial for two main reasons. Firstly, masks lower the amount of virus that can enter the nose, and secondly, they maintain warm air in front of the face which helps keep epithelial cells working their best.
Another thing that can affect how the body responds to viruses in the winter is humidity (the amount of water in the air), as the air inside our homes tends to be drier than usual. In a study published in 2019, researchers found that when mice live in dry air conditions — between 10% and 20% relative humidity — their ability to fight cold infections declines, compared with mice living in 50% relative humidity.
That’s because, in dry conditions, protective cells within the respiratory system also secrete fewer chemicals that can help prevent viruses from reproducing. Thus, it’s advised to keep the relative humidity level between 40% and 60% indoors.
46. What is the behavioral factor behind people’s catching a cold in winter
A.Their preference for gathering inside.
B.Their improper habit of layering up.
C.Their frequent ventilation.
D.Their insufficient exercise.
47. What do we know about epithelial cells
A.They help control a runny nose.
B.They become inactive in the cold.
C.They reproduce quickly in the cold.
D.They help reduce secretions in the nose.
48. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The process of catching a cold.
B.The role of masks in preventing colds.
C.How to choose suitable face coverings.
D.How to keep warm in the freezing cold.
49. What did the study from 2019 reveal
A.Proper humidity boosts cold resistance.
B.Viruses survive briefly in dry conditions.
C.Indoor temperatures decide air humidity.
D.Respiratory systems increase secretions in dry air.
50. The author writes the text to ______.
A.introduce the best cure for colds
B.recognize different cold viruses
C.help people prevent colds in winter
D.familiarize people with the impacts of winter

Lightning can be extremely powerful and cause serious problems on the ground. Lightning strikes can cause fires, destroy buildings, and kill people. The damage from lightning costs billions of dollars every year. In the US, lightning strikes caused the death of about 450 people between 2006 and 2021. Less lightning means fewer losses in human life, and that’s why scientists have been working on the related technology to improve lightning protection.
Currently, the best way to protect buildings from lightning is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings. These rods are connected to the ground. The lightning is attracted to the rods, which safely guide the electricity into the ground. But lightning rods can only protect a small area. If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. But some buildings, such as airports, are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
One idea is to use lasers (激光) to guide lightning, which is not novel. Scientists have been working on it for over 20 years and have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a laboratory. But scientists hadn’t been able to guide lightning with lasers outside until the summer of 2021. Using a powerful laser that can fire about 1,000 times a second, scientists in Switzerland were able to guide lightning strikes for 164 feet. The heat from the laser creates a path of air that is less thick than the air around it. The path also has a special charge (电荷). The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod. That the scientists managed to experiment with the laser in an outdoor environment is a very big step.
Despite the progress, the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance. Lasers are also very expensive. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings.
51. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To encourage readers to use lightning rods.
B.To call on readers to protect the environment.
C.To explain the importance of preventing lightning.
D.To remind readers to stay safe during lightning storms.
52. What is the disadvantage of lightning rods
A.Their short service life.
B.Their limited coverage.
C.Their expensive material.
D.Their low speed of guiding electricity.
53. What does the underlined word “novel” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.New.
B.Effective.
C.Confusing.
D.Costly.
54. What did the scientists use the laser for
A.Reducing the heat of lightning.
B.Changing the path of lightning.
C.Slowing down the speed of lightning.
D.Protecting the lightning rod from damage.
55. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The laser works better in a lab.
B.The technology has yet to be perfected.
C.The research result will soon benefit humans.
D.The scientists think poorly of the lightning rod.

Dear teachers and friends,
It’s my great honour to be here to share my opinions on English learning.
I am fond of English and keep a good habit of reading English articles every day. Besides, I take notes carefully in class and practise listening after school. But I still meet some difficulties. So I’d like to put forward some practical suggestions.
First, I hope we can have more chances to practise oral English in class. Second, it would be better if our teachers could recommend more interesting English reading materials. What’s more, holding more Englishrelated activities will greatly arouse our interest.
I believe we will make greater progress with these measures.
Thank you for listening!
