More than 20 bird species worldwide use a similar “whining” alarm call to warn others about birds like cuckoos (布谷鸟). This call is understood across different species and shows how communication can evolve in response to shared threats.
Cuckoos are known as “brood parasites”. They lay their eggs in other birds’ nests, tricking the host birds into raising the cuckoo chicks as their own. This is a serious threat to the host’s own offspring.
Researchers found that 21 different bird species, from different continents like Australasia, Africa, and Europe, all use a very similar whining sound when they spot these brood parasites. In addition, these species shared a distant common ancestor about 53 million years ago, suggesting they developed this call independently. This special alarm call seems to have evolved in areas where brood parasites are common. When potential host birds hear the whine, they quickly gather and aggressively mob the invader to scare it away. “Brood parasites are a unique threat; they are a huge danger to your offspring but not to you,” explained researcher Will Feeney. The call likely functions to bring in other birds as quickly as possible for help.
Feeney believes birds may have adapted an existing and natural distress call and repurposed it for this specific, highthreatening situation. This adaptation of a basic sound for a new, shared purpose could be an early step towards the development of more complex language.
To test this, scientists played the alarm calls of foreign bird species to hosts in Australia and China. The birds responded just as rapidly by mobbing, showing that the call’s meaning is understood across species boundaries. This suggests the call’s main function is for crossspecies communication.
