After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) go up into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth. “Some day I’d love to do that.” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. “He was not so keen on heights as I was,” she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider at the age of 80. Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free. Thompson did her second paragliding when she turned 85, and raised nearly 2,000 pounds for a local charity.
Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight. Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said, “Any age, as long as you’re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents’ shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diplomas (文凭) in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils on her books. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older “Fear No. People say: Isn’t getting old awful I say: No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.”
“People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t worry me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.” Thompson added.

Instant noodles (方便面) are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Imagine eating them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how you prepare them.
The main problem isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them: pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning (佐料) packets. These seasoning packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making this version unbalanced and unhealthy.
Actually, simple instant noodles aren’t terrible. They’re fried during production (which adds some oil and calories), but they make you feel full and provide quick energy when you’re hungry. To make them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, pour out excess starchy (含有淀粉的) water, then use fresh water. Most importantly, use only half the seasoning packet to reduce salt. Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg or tofu while cooking. This helps you get more vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This transforms them into a balanced meal!
So, are instant noodles junk food If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras, yes.
But when cooked with less seasoning plus vegetables and protein, they become a good meal. Remember: the secret is variety. Enjoy them once or twice a week as part of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think — just improve your cooking method!
8. What makes instant noodles unhealthy
A.The way to prepare.
B.Their quick cooking time.
C.The time of eating.
D.The junk food style.
9. What is the major cause of unhealthy instant noodles
A.The dried noodles.
B.The vegetables.
C.Using boiling water.
D.The seasoning packets.
10. What is the main purpose of the third paragraph
A.Warn about health dangers.
B.Argue noodles are harmful.
C.Tell people how to cook properly.
D.List harmful additives.
11. What is the suitable title for the passage
A.Instant Noodles: What We Know
B.Instant Noodles: When to Cook
C.Instant Noodles: Eat Sometimes.
D.Instant Noodles: Not All Waste.

On a cold day in February 2012, two hunters in eastern Russia discovered a tiger cub (幼兽) lying in the snow. It was about 3 months old. “It hadn’t eaten for days and was frozen (冻僵的). It was too weak,” remembered Dr. Dale Miquelle, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Russia Program. The cub was sent to a local wildlife observer who cared for it back to health.
The cub was an Amur tiger. “Only about 400 Amur tigers are still living in the world. In the past, we always sent cubs to zoos,” said Dr. Miquelle. “Now we have a way to give them a second chance at life in the wild.” He and his coworker took the cub to a new wildlife center which was designed for raising wild animals without people living around. It uses hidden cameras and covered fences (围栏) to keep workers out of sight. That way, the animal doesn’t lose its natural instincts (本能) or become dependent on humans. In the center, the cub, now named Zolushka, learned to hunt and grew up into a big healthy tiger.
By the spring of 2013, experts agreed Zolushka was ready to return to the wild. They set it free in the Bastak Nature Reserve in the area, where there used to be tigers 50 years ago but they have died out. “Their survival (存活) rests only in the hands of humans,” said Dr. Miquelle.
During the next two years, researchers watched Zolushka’s progress. They set up cameras to take photos of Zolushka. Zolushka not only survived, but also thrived. Then, in December 2015, the cameras showed exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother! For the first time ever, a tiger that humans had raised and returned to the wild had given birth to two cubs of her own.
Thanks to the work of people like Dr. Miquelle, there is new hope for these beautiful cats.
12. Why are covered fences used in the wildlife center
A.To raise animals more easily.
B.To keep animals’ wild instincts.
C.To make animals depend on humans.
D.To stop animals returning to the wild.
13. What does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Left.
B.Struggled.
C.Developed.
D.Returned.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards Dr. Miquelle’s work
A.Opposed.
B.Doubtful.
C.Unknown.
D.Positive.
15. What is the text mainly about
A.How a tiger was saved and protected.
B.What environment is needed for a tiger.
C.What people should do to save wildlife.
D.How an injured animal should be treated.

Dear Mike,
I quite understand your feeling of wanting to travel alone. Your parents worry about your safety because you are still young, and there may be unexpected risks during the trip.
I suggest you talk calmly with them. Tell them your travel plans in detail. As a compromise, you can travel with one or two friends instead of going all by yourself. Besides, promise to keep in touch with them during the journey.
I hope things will go well with you.
Yours,
Li Hua
