When Tony took up running as a hobby, he was 42 years old. 42 years later he's a national
champion and a world record holder. He has never imagined at the age of 84 this is where he is,
and he hasn't met many people in their 80s who are out training four times a week.
"I can see it's a bit unusual, yes. But it's been my life," he told the reporter.
The retired officer runs on a track near his home in Leeds. At an event in Italy last month he
set a world record in the 80 metres hurdles (跨栏赛) with a time of under 17 seconds. But he sees
no reason to slow down and his goal is still to be competing when he passes a hundred years of
age.
"I probably won't be doing a crouch start (蹲踞式起跑 ), but it's only 16 years away," he
joked. Like anyone of his age, he's had health problems. He's had a string of severe heart attacks,
but doctors have told him that as long as it makes him feel good, he should carry on running. "I
can't let my heart get in the way of my training. When I am sprinting, I have to give it my all. My
heart is the last thing on my mind," he said.
He trains every other day, dances and plays hockey and he recently cut down on alcohol and

chocolate. He said, "I've heard alcohol can lead to dementia and I don't want that. I've cut it down
to one glass of wine every other day. I now have to stay as fit as I can to keep up my lifestyle."
Tony's next birthday is in next September. And the first thing he wants to do is become the
world's fastest 85-year-old.

Ever wondered if the fruit juice in your fridge is still safe to drink A new "electronic tongue"
could tell you. The system, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), can identify issues with food
safety and freshness. It also offers a look at how Al makes decisions, researchers reported in the
journal Nature.
We're trying to make an artificial tongue, but the process of how we experience different
foods involves more than just the tongue," said study co-author Saptarshi Das, an engineer at Penn
State University, in a statement. We have the tongue, which has taste receptors that interact with
food and send information to the brain’s taste center”.
In the new system, the sensor acts as the tongue, while Al plays the role of brain's taste
center. The team connected the sensor to an artificial neura(l 神经的)network, a machine learning
program that works like the human brain, to process and interpret the data that the sensor collected.
At first, Das and his team gave the neural network a handful of parameters(参数) to use
when finding out how acidic a certain liquid (液体)was. Using those parameters, the neural
network determined acidity with about 91% accuracy (准确性). When they let the neural network
define its own parameters for the acidity analysis, its accuracy improved to more than 95%. They
then tested the tongue on real-world drinks and found it could differentiate soft drinks, determine
whether fruit juice has gone bad, and identify harmful things in water.
Using a method to help scientists understand Al decision-making, the team identified key
factors influencing the neural network's decisions and found how the network improved sensor
dependability by accounting for real-world changes.
"We figured out that we can live with imperfection," Das said in the statement. "And that's
第 4 页 共 9 页
what nature is — it's full of imperfections, but it can still make dependable decisions, just like
our electronic tongue."
28. What is the main function of the "electronic tongue"
A. To identify different drinks. B. To improve food taste.
C. To check food safety. D. To copy the human taste experience.
29. What is the sensor's main role in the system
A. Collecting data. B. Controlling changes.
C. Testing liquids. D. Storing information.
30. What does the underlined word“differentiate” mean
A.Confuse B. Distinguish C. Create D. Analyze
31. What is Saptarshi Das's attitude toward the electronic tongue
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Curious. D. Uninterested.

If you turn over a plastic bottle, like those we use to drink water, you'll notice a number “1”
-that means it's made of a material called PET. Some bags, like the kind that holds milk or coffee,
get a“2”, meaning they're made of a material called HDPE. At material recovery factories, plastics
get sorted based on these numbers (they go up to 7), which shows how recyclable they are.
Plastic marking numbers 1 and 2 are recyclable. They can be made into carpet, clothing,
plastic package, as well as other products, according to Live Science.
Recycling gets more difficult with higher numbers, called “mixed plastic”. This waste makes
up 69% of all the plastic we use in the daily life. It's much more expensive to deal with than
numbers 1 and 2. In the past, mixed plastics would be sent to other countries. But two years ago,
almost no country was allowed to buy foreign plastic waste.
Recycling companies had to find a new market, but many failed. For example, in Los
Angeles, recycling companies still won't recycle any plastics with numbers higher than 2.
Instead, they are burying or burning them.
According to Live Science, what the USA needs is machines that can be used to recycle other
kinds of plastic. But Hocevar, a scientist, comes up with a different solution: “The really simple
answer is there isn't so much throwaway plastic in the world.”
Someone may ask,“Is recycling worth it ”For bottles with “1” or“2”, the answer is “yes”,
said Hocevar. There's also a growing market for plastics marked“5”, a flexible(灵活的) plastic
that includes yogurt containers(容器).For other numbers, the answer was simpler: a “no” on
numbers 3,4,6 and 7.
32. What does the number on plastic products refer to
A. How recyclable the products are.
B. Where the products were made.
C. What recycle technology is needed.
D. Where the products would end up.
33. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A. The cost to recycle mixed plastic.
B. The solution to dealing with plastic waste.
第 5 页 共 9 页
C. The plastic waste in our daily life.
D. The difficultly in recycling mixed plastics.
34.What is Hocevar's suggestion
A. Burn or bury mixed plastics.
B. Stop producing mixed plastic products.
C. Sell the mixed plastics to other countries.
D. Make more machines to recycle mixed plastics.
35. Where might you find a number“5”
A. On a milk container. B. On a coffee bag.
C. On a yogurt container. D. On a water bottle.
