On warm winter days, Yang Liheng 89 enjoys sitting by the window and looking through old photos. These photos bring him joy and happiness once more.
For Yang, one of the longexpected activities during the Spring Festival is to take photos with family members. On the early morning of the second day of the Chinese New Year when the whole family reunite, he would dress up and wait for the photo to be taken.
Yang became a photographer in the late 1950s. With his camera, Yang recorded the great changes of his hometown over time. “I had a painful childhood. but I got a chance to be a photographer after the founding(成立)of the People’s Republic of China.” Yang told Beijing Review. “I want to record, in the form of photographs, the local customs, the scenes and people’s brave spirit of fighting against the hard conditions here in my hometown.”
“I used to take pictures for everyone else, but seldom turned my camera at my family members.” Yang said. “My grandson gave me the idea to record the growth and development of my own family.” Taking family photos then became a tradition for Yang’s family. Though now some of his grandchildren are working and living in other cities, they try their best to return home during the Spring Festival and prepare for the special moment.

Pornpawee is a fan of traditional Chinese culture. She is among thousands of young people in Thailand who have learned Mandarin (普通话). And she has been teaching Mandarin in a creative way, making learning more enjoyable.
In recent years, more young people in Thailand are trying to learn about China through social media, movies and TV programs, and hanfu is very popular with Pornpawee’s students. That’s where she has got her new idea of teaching. She shares the latest Chinese fashion (时尚) with them in class, helping them learn about the culture as well as the language itself.
“Mandarin is like a key, helping me to open the door to understand China,” she said. Pornpawee developed a love for the Chinese language at the age of 13. When she was in high school, she made an important decision — learning Mandarin at college. Now Pornpawee has taught Mandarin for over 10 years.
Pornpawee visited China for the first time while she was in the university. She found Chinese food so great. Before traveling to China, Pornpawee had only heard of a few Chinese dishes, such as hot pot and jiaozi. She was amazed by the kinds, the tastes and the Chinese ways of cooking. “Chinese people are very f… to foreigners. During my first visit to China, my Chinese friends and their families always took good care of me and kept asking whether I was used to the life,” she recalled (回忆).

We know many musical instruments well, such as pianos, violins and drums. What about the erhu The erhu is a traditional Chinese instrument. It is the most popular of the huqin family, and it has a long history.
The modern erhu developed from the xiqin. It was played by many ethnic minorities (少数民族) during the Tang Dynasty (朝代). In the Song Dynasty, musicians began to use the erhu to play different kinds of music, and it became quite a popular instrument. With the rise of some forms of folk art, the art of the erhu developed quickly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It became an important accompanying (伴奏) instrument in different folk music. At present, it is used in both traditional and modern music, such as in pop, rock and jazz. It has even become a solo (独奏) instrument. One of the most famous musical pieces played on the erhu is Erquan Yingyue.
As the erhu was mainly played by common people and the playing skills were passed down orally (口头地), there are few written records about the erhu.
