Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a special assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass, who instructed each student to memorize three poems of their choosing from The Norton Anthology of American Literature—not for any urgent exam reason, he claimed, but instead to prepare them for their unavoidable future occasions when you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.
If the task was as a strange one, it’s because the act of memorizing a poem feels curiously old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all. When I was in graduate school, working toward a degree in English literature, I mostly limited myself to essays. It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways. It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem. Sometimes I spoke its lines aloud, my voice masked by the airplane’s thrum. Sometimes I went through the whole poem at once, and sometimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) over and over, and by the time my plane landed on the West Coast, I had the whole thing, all 40 lines of it, in my head. Because the process is as simple as it is very boring, memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you run your hands through the rock, the lines at last come together again, and the scattered text transforms back into a treasure.
In other words, poetry survives continuously by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only because it is so specific, so entirely different from us, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep beating in me like a new pulse. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.
4. Why did Robert L. Hass advise students to read poems
A.To become literature professors.
B.To prepare for the coming exams.
C.To compose more original poems.
D.To relieve their future loneliness.
5. Why does the author say that memorizing a poem begins as a crime
A.It’s out of date to recite poems.
B.Repetition wastes a lot of time.
C.Repetition ruins the poem’s beauty.
D.It’s a shame to read poems on plane.
6. How does understanding poetry influence us
A.By broadening self-understanding.
B.By refreshing our good memories.
C.By helping us survive the hard life.
D.By reminding us to forget the past.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards memorizing poetry in the last paragraph
A.Doubtful.
B.Reserved.
C.Appreciative.
D.Critical.

Properly drinking coffee or tea might help lower the risk of stroke (中风) and dementia (痴呆), according to a study of healthy people aged 50-74. This study was published on November 16 in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine.
Strokes are serious health events that cause 10% of deaths worldwide. Dementia is a term for symptoms(症状) that show a fall in brain function and is a major health issue globally, with high economic and social costs. Post-stroke dementia is when dementia symptoms appear after a stroke.
Yuan Zhang and his colleagues from Tianjin Medical University in China studied 365,682participants(参与者) from the UK Biobank. These participants were chosen between 2006and 2010 and were followed until 2020. At the beginning of the study, participants reported how much coffee and tea they drank. During the study, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 had at least one stroke.
The study found that people who drank 2-3 cups of coffee or 3-5 cups of tea per day, or a combination of 4-6 cups of coffee and tea, had the lowest rates of stroke or dementia. Those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea daily had a 32% lower risk of stroke and a 28% lower risk of dementia compared to those who drank neither coffee nor tea. Drinking coffee alone or with tea was also linked to a lower risk of dementia after a stroke.
The UK Biobank participants were relatively healthy compared to the general population, which might limit how well these results apply to everyone. Also, not many people in the study developed dementia or had a stroke, making it hard to apply these findings to larger groups. Lastly, while coffee and tea might help protect against stroke and dementia, the study cannot prove that drinking them causes these benefits. The authors said, “Our findings suggest that properly drinking coffee and tea, separately or together, is associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia.”
8. What is the result of the study
A.Stroke and dementia have led to many deaths.
B.Stroke and dementia result from coffee and tea drinking.
C.Properly drinking coffee and tea may lower the risk of stroke and dementia.
D.Drinking coffee and tea can be helpful in dealing with post-stroke dementia.
9. How did Yuan Zhang and his colleagues conduct the study
A.By turning to the government for help.
B.By choosing volunteers all over China.
C.By picking out suitable participants from the UK.
D.By collecting participants from the UK Biobank.
10. What can we learn about the study from the last paragraph
A.The help from the UK Biobank is limited.
B.The results of the study are widely accepted.
C.Most of the samples from the UK Biobank have severe diseases.
D.Samples from the UK Biobank are effective and enough for the study.
11. From which is the text probably taken
A.A travel brochure.
B.A health magazine.
C.A biology textbook.
D.A fashion website.

When babies are exposed to a variety of faces, they become more adept in recognizing and appreciating diversity, which can help reduce biases and prejudices as they grow. This is according to neuroscientist Saskia Koch of the Donders Institute and Radboud University.
Koch conducted her research using data from the Nijmegen longitudinal study. This study follows young people from infancy (婴儿期). First, the researchers looked at how frequently the teenagers had attended day care as babies. Then, the same youngsters were assigned the duty of playing a game when they reached the age of 17. In the game, they had to work with another person they couldn’t see. Both players had the same goal: find an object on a gameboard. Only the 17-year-old knew where the item was. The 17-year-olds had to communicate this location to each other without using words. They had to design communicative patterns that would assist the other person in locating the object. This could be accomplished, for example, by performing specific movements.
The 17-year-olds were informed they were playing with a 5-year-old in one game and an adult in another, despite the fact that it was the same individual each time. Initially, the 17- year-olds adjusted their communicative patterns when they thought they were interacting with the child by placing more emphasis on their movements. How quickly they abandoned this pattern depended on how much time they spent in day care. 17-year-olds who had come into contact with many different people as infants were more likely to get over a stereotype (刻板印象). They found out in the interaction that the “child” was also very good and then based their play on that.
According to the researcher this means that babies who have had more diverse social interactions can more easily let go of a stereotype later in life. They are more sensitive to social interaction and can more quickly let go of the image they have in their minds of their peers. Koch says, “Gaining many diverse social experiences early in life allows us to adapt better to the needs of our partners in social interaction. ”
12. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Forgetful.
B.Skillful.
C.Interested.
D.Disappointed.
13. What was the purpose of the game in the study
A.To confirm the data from the Nijmegen study.
B.To test the impacts of early social interactions.
C.To enhance the youngsters’ cooperative ability.
D.To assess the effects of communicative patterns.
14. How did the 17-year-olds first respond to the “child” in the game
A.They changed their fixed idea of a child.
B.They adjusted the time spent on the game.
C.They performed more specific movements.
D.They employed verbal interactive patterns.
15. What helps babies with future social contacts according to Koch
A.Interacting with various people.
B.Engaging with diverse peers.
C.Adapting to the needs of partners.
D.Letting go of the old images.

Multitasking is really bad for how much work you can get done. When we do multiple tasks at once, we keep “switching tasks”. ____16____ Switching between tasks a lot makes you less productive. Even though each switch cost might be small, when we keep changing between tasks over and over, those small costs add up to a lot. Multitasking might seem efficient at first, but in the end, it can take more time and lead to more mistakes. So, how do we start mono-tasking that is doing one task at a time
Try to work deeply, focusing on one thing. Instead of working in short 15 — 20-minute bursts, set aside 2 to 4 hours each day to work on a single project without any interruptions. Extending focused working time can improve work efficiency as well as work quality. ____17____
Get rid of distractions in your work environment. Mono-tasking is as much about getting rid of distractions as it is about focusing. ____18____ Mark fixed time on your calendar for specific work.
____19____ Schedule your day around peak performance times. Whether it’s early in the morning , right after lunch, or late at night, everyone has times of the day when they’re more productive. Once you identify your peak performance time, guard it!
Focus on what’s important. Try to remember: At the end of our lives, no one will remember how quickly we responded to emails; no one on their deathbed asks for more time to sit through another budget meeting. ____20____ This is the key part of doing one task at a time.
A.Avoiding distraction is of vital importance.
B.Plan deep work for times when you work best.
C.This causes a “switch cost” — the time needed to get used to a new task.
D.Instead, we look for more time to concentrate on the meaningful thing.
E.Frequent task switching can boost productivity a lot.
F.Shut down your phones’ apps or anything else that sends notification.
G.It can also reduce your work stress to some extent.

I’ve always had a love for basketball, so when it came time to continue my basketball journey at Columbia High School, I resolved to make it onto the school’s varsity (校队) basketball team. Any time I wasn’t studying, I was putting on my sports shoes and hitting the school stadium. Just before bed, I’d look up videos of LeBron James and Kevin Durant, trying to learn from the professionals. Day and night, all I could think about was how to get better and how to improve.
After months and months of practice and playing on the junior varsity team, Coach Moore finally told me one day that I was going to be playing for our school’s varsity basketball team going into my junior year. Success! Time for the big league! What I didn’t know, however, was that I was going to face a pretty big challenge in the form of a new transfer student: Chet Harrison.
Harrison had just transferred from another school, Westmoreland High School, where he had already been playing for the varsity team. There were rumors floating around that he was nearly guaranteed a spot playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and maybe even the National Basketball League someday.
I’ll admit, the kid was a natural talent when it came to playing basketball. But Harrison’s biggest weakness was his personality. He seemed selfish and sometimes acted like a bully, always seeking attention and showing off after scoring goals. Despite his loyal following of fans, I couldn’t stand him. But after Coach Moore said that Harrison and I would be playing together, I decided to accept it and make peace with the situation.
After months of putting up with Harrison’s attitude, I nearly had enough. Just before the winter break, however, we played a home match against Harrison’s old school Westmoreland and we lost. Harrison in particular felt utterly embarrassed.

I found Harrison struggling to fight off tears in a corner of the boys’ locker room. I hesitated for a second and walked over to comfort him. He lowered his head, admitting that he blamed himself for the loss because he cared too much about proving himself and ignored teamwork. I told him I used to dislike his arrogant behavior but understood his pressure now. We talked about our mistakes in the game and made up our minds to cooperate sincerely from then on. Later, we trained together every afternoon, learning to pass the ball and cover each other’s weaknesses.
After months of working together, we found ourselves again facing Westmoreland on the basketball court for the finals. We cooperated perfectly throughout the match. Harrison stopped showing off and passed the ball timely, while I guarded the opponents tightly. At last, we won the game. After the match, Harrison and I smiled and high-fived each other. Coach Moore praised our growth and teamwork. We realized that true strength lay in mutual respect and joint efforts rather than individual glory.
