The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began. “Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.
Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.

Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy (遗产). But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.
“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘technofossil’, because it is incredibly tough, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils. “So wherever those future civilizations dig, they are going to find plastic.”
Clothes will also make an abrupt entry into humanity’s fossil record. Today, the world’s growing population often wears massproduced synthetic (合成的) clothing that are rapidly thrown away and they are not as easily decomposed as cotton and silk.
“We are making them in ridiculous amounts,” says Gabbott. We throw them into landfills (填埋场), which are like giant mummification tombs. It is already clear that much of modern fashion will end up being truly timeless.”
Fossils are not just objects left behind, but also the traces of life’s activity written into the rocks. Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many nearindestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT. Given that similar molecules produced by bacteria have been found in rocks that are 1,600m years old in Western Australia, these chemicals appear to be here to stay. “And there is the graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott. “It is endearing to think that it may be the drawings of children that may survive best of all: a pencil portrait, perhaps, of a family outside a house, with the sun shining and a rainbow arcing across the sky,” she says jokingly.
“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eyewatering — it’s off the scale,” says Gabbott. All of the stuff made by humans by 1950 was a small part of all the matter on Earth. But today it outweighs all plants and animals. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says, “Do you need that Do you really need to buy more ”

About 20 million people die each year due to cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. Luckily, a team of researchers from the University of Nottingham in the UK have developed a machine learning algorithm (算法) that can predict your likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke as well as any doctor.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has developed a series of guidelines for estimating a patient’s cardiovascular risk which is based on eight factors including age, cholesterol level and blood pressure. On average, this system correctly guesses a person’s risk at a rate of 72.8 percent.
That’s pretty accurate, but Stephen Weng and his team set about to make it better. They built four computer learning algorithms, and then fed them data from 378,256 patients in the United Kingdom. The systems first used around 295,267 records to generate their internal predictive models. Then they used the remaining records to test and refine them.
The algorithms results significantly outperformed the AHA guidelines, ranging from 74.5 to 76.4 percent accuracy. The neural (神经的) network algorithm tested highest, beating the existing guidelines by 7.6 percent while raising 1.6 percent fewer false alarms.
Out of the 83,000 patient set of test records, this system could have saved 355 extra lives. In addition, the AI systems identified a number of risk factors and predictors not covered in the existing guidelines, like severe mental illness and the consumption of oral corticosteroids (皮质激素类). “There are a lot of interactions in biological systems,” Weng told Science. “That’s the reality of the human body. What computer science allows us to do is explore those associations.”
This is where AI can transform preventative medicine. By using vast datasets to uncover complex, nonlinear risk interactions beyond human analysis, these algorithms can enable earlier, more precise interventions. This represents a significant step toward a future where datadriven predictions fundamentally reshape proactive healthcare, moving beyond standardized checklists to personalized risk assessment.
