Two years ago, my 11yearold son sat me down for a talk. “Mom, it’s time.” he said. “Hear me out: It’s time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone.”
This funny conversation two years ago marked a shift in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to my son’s opinion about our home technology. Since his reasoning was sensible and his suggestions within budget, I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I’d known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. After something was stolen from our front yard, he picked out, set up, and now monitors our security camera. When my computer died, I took him shopping with me.
As a teenager now, he has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming with his friends. I see our time together decreasing and our shared interests shrinking. That’s why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. I’m a writer, but I’d need a partner who has more tech knowledge than me. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted
It’s changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he’s learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an unknowing audience. The parentchild dynamic is not only changed; it’s even slightly reversed — he’s leading me. I’m asking him for help and advice. My son has risen to the occasion. He’s taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone who’s not much of a reader, he now searches instruction book. Without any prompting, he’s even emailed and called, yes, made an actual phone call to customer service or tech support when sample products weren’t working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it’s proved to be a valuable way to learn from, work with and enjoy time with my teen.
4. What did the writer think of her son’s advice
A.It was unaffordable.
B.It was beyond reach.
C.It sounded reasonable.
D.It sounded surprising.
5. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3
A.Prove her son’s better mastery of technology.
B.Describe their close parentchild relationship.
C.Give examples of her son’s interest in airplanes.
D.Express her satisfaction of her son’s timely help.
6. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “reversed” in Paragraph 5
A.Unrealistic.
B.Opposite.
C.Negative.
D.Common.
7. What makes the writer feel honored
A.Her son’s patience with their relationship.
B.Her son’s attitudes to some unknown audiences.
C.Her son’s growth and serious attitude to the work.
D.Her son’s desire to change the parentchild dynamic.

The pupils in Paula Merrigan’s kindergarten (幼儿园) class often call her Mom, or sometimes even Grandma, partly because Merrigan ensures all the children are greeted with a big smile when they enter the classroom in the morning. She works with every single one of them oneonone at some point during the day, and she’s generous with praise, hugs, and affection.
“When small children tell you they love you, say it back to them,” said the teacher. “It’s important for every child to feel their teacher cares about them and that school is always a secure place to stay. When they know you truly care about them, they want to do their best for you, because they’re seeking your approval.”
Merrigan also lets the children tell her their stories to learn what they’re passionate about. “When you learn about certain things they like and tie them to your topic, they love it,” she said. “Maybe the children told you that they really like dinosaurs so when you’re teaching the letter ‘D’, you create a dinosaur art project to go with it.”
Given that separation anxiety hits many youngsters hard when they enter the kindergarten classroom, how children feel at the beginning of their schooling can set the tone for the rest of their academic life, experts say. “This is important for little ones because this is often the first time that they’re experiencing formal education,” said Hedy Chang, executive director of Attendance Works, a nonprofit working to boost student attendance. “What happens during this time can help lay the foundation for social and academic success.”
Researchers found students of all ages who miss an excessive amount of school often suffer from mental issues. They may need to feel nurtured, experts say. “To the degree that parents keep kids home from school because the kids say they don’t want to go,” said Deborah Stipek, an expert from Stanford University, “children’s relationship with the teacher should be an important factor.” Merrigan, who herself remembers faking being sick a few times as a child, couldn’t agree more.
8. What is Merrigan’s class like
A.Warm, supportive, and engaging.
B.Comfortable, quiet and testscoredriven.
C.Loving and teachercentered.
D.Caring and focused on personal work.
9. Why does Merrigan listen to her students’ personal stories
A.To learn about children’s behavior patterns.
B.To help with exact grading and assessments (评价).
C.To easily manage possible classroom differences.
D.To make her students more focused on her lessons.
10. What is the best title for the passage
A.Managing Parental Separation Anxiety.
B.attendance and Academic (学业的) Achievement.
C.Creative Kindergarten Teaching Methods.
D.Developing Emotional Connections in Kindergartens.

Over the past year, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed 10 safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians (行人) and cyclists, particularly young people. These measures were introduced in response to accidents involving youth. Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students — have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement.
Many of these students expressed mixed feelings about biking in the city: while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural (基础设施的) upgrades to educational initiatives. For example, David Harb from Lane Tech High School stressed the importance of safety training, such as hand signals, and recommended expanding National Walk and Bike to School Day to include high schools. He also proposed replacing stop signs with roundabouts to naturally slow traffic.
Other students highlighted issues with enforcement and infrastructure. Kaniyah Hale believes drivers who cause collisions with cyclists or pedestrians should receive stronger punishment. Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement and increase traffic law enforcement, especially on weekends. Tamara Scott, both a cyclist and a new driver, pointed out that bike lanes are frequently blocked by cars, emphasizing that motorists must be reminded they are sharing the road.
Christopher Garcia, an experienced cyclist, imagines a redesigned road system with separate spaces for bicycles and cars, along with shared zones. Together, these teens agree that making Chicago’s streets safer will require not only physical changes but also a shift in culture and attitudes among all road users.

A.A project on protecting pedestrians.
B.A school offering teens bike safety training.

A.Biking safety must be ensured.
B.Steps count in reducing infrastructure costs.
C.Safety training outweighs facility upgrades.
D.Stop signs effectively slow down traffic flow.
13. Why does the author mention Armand Dunkines’ accident
A.To call on motorists to follow the rules.
B.To complain about the lack of bike lanes.
C.To show the benefits of law enforcement.
D.To criticize the poor design of infrastructure.
14. What can be a suitable title for the text

It might surprise you to learn that dogs are playing an increasingly important role as conservationists. For centuries, they have been known as man’s best friends. Now, their unique abilities are being used to help protect some of the world’s most threatened species.
Quick and loyal, dogs possess many qualities that make them ideal for fieldwork, but it’s their extraordinary sense of smell that makes them invaluable for conservation work. With around 220 million olfactory receptors(嗅觉受体)compared to just 5 million in humans, dogs can detect scents(气味)and analyze them with astonishing accuracy, devoting 40 times more of their brain to scent analysis than we do.
Thanks to this incredible ability, some dogs are now being trained to save atrisk animals by sniffing(嗅)out their droppings. At the University of Washington’s Conservation Canines facility, 20 specially trained dogs have successfully tracked killer whale droppings, which only float briefly on the ocean’s surface. Analyzing these samples enables scientists to monitor the health of killer whale populations, which are under significant stress from food shortages, pollution, and boat traffic.
Beyond tracking animal droppings, conservation dogs are also trained for live animal detection, further showcasing their abilities. They can locate rare species in their natural habitats. Additionally, they are now used to tackle the nonnative species that threaten the survival of the local wildlife. Dogs also take on other important roles. For example, at Kenya’s Mombasa port, dogs sniff out illegal wildlife products such as rhino horns and ivory. Across Africa, they work on the frontlines against illegal hunting, serving as a powerful security force enhancer.
While dogs may not be the ultimate solution to every conservation challenge, their incomparable abilities make them invaluable companions in the fight to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
15. Why are the figures mentioned in the second paragraph
A.To highlight the superiority of dogs’ sense of smell.
B.To suggest the amazing accuracy of dogs’ analysis.
C.To recognize the importance of conservation work.
D.To show dogs’ impressive achievements in fieldwork.
16. How do dogs help protect killer whales
A.By tracking their movements.
B.By detecting their droppings.
C.By monitoring their populations.
D.By analyzing the collected samples.
17. What can we learn from the example given in Paragraph 4
A.Wildlife products are popular in African countries.
B.Nonnative species affect the survival of local wildlife.
C.Dogs are used to detect and prevent illegal wildlife trade.
D.Dogs can accurately locate the natural habitats of rare species.
18. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To appeal to people to protect biodiversity.
B.To report various environmental challenges.
C.To introduce dogs’ roles in conservation efforts.
D.To prove the conventional claim of dogs’ qualities.
