Liu Heng was Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother was once ill for three years. He attended to her each day after dealing with affairs of state. For safety reasons, he would test the medicine before he took it to his mother. His filial piety (孝顺) was praised throughout the kingdom. During his rule, the population flourished and the country prospered.
Tanzi was a viscount in the State of Tan during the Spring and Autumn Period. His aged parents suffered from eye diseases and needed to drink deer’s milk as part of their treatment. He therefore disguised himself in a deerskin and sneaked into a herd of deer in the mountains to obtain deer's milk. Once, when he was taking deer's milk, a hunter mistook him for a deer and was going to shoot him. He revealed himself and told the truth to the hunter. The hunter respected his filial piety and escorted him out of the mountains.
Huang Xiang lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty. His mother passed away when he was 9. He would cool his father’s pillow and mat with a fan in the hot summer and warm his father’s quilts and cushions with his body in the cold winter. When he grew up, he served as the prefect (太守) of Wei County. When the county suffered from a flood, he donated all his possessions to help victims. A saying goes that there is no parallel in this world to Huang Xiang.
Wang Xiang lived in the Western Jin Dynasty. His mother died when he was young. His stepmother didn’t treat him well and often spoke ill of him. Because of this, he also lost the love of his father. But when his parents were ill, he looked after them carefully. One cold winter day, his stepmother wanted to eat fresh fish. He took off his clothes and lay on the frozen river to melt the ice with his body. The ice melted and two carp (鲤鱼) leaped out. He took them home and his stepmother was moved.

It was the summer before junior year. I was a waitress at a little restaurant. My duties were straightforward: taking orders, delivering food and cleaning tables. I got really good at managing multiple tasks, and having a lot of responsibilities made me more responsible.
These values and skills are what numerous studies hold up as the important reasons why teenagers should work during the summer. They’re what teachers mention when they encourage us to get jobs. I developed those skills. But I don’t think that’s the main benefit high school students get from working.
So much happened in the interstitial (空隙的) time and spaces between our roles as waitresses, cooks and customers. This is where I think the value of a high school job lies: learning how to form a community with people I never would have otherwise known.
High school students spend about seven hours a day in classes, and then often stay afterward for school-sponsored sports or activities. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to be wrapped up in school. But what I find is that a job can serve as a relief from the academic tasks of high school.
This relief came not from avoiding people, but from engaging with a community I would never have found in the halls of my high school. The people I met at the restaurant taught me that you can become friends with those decades older than you and strangers who have none of the same interests or hobbies as you do. They taught me that you can wildly disagree with someone and still respect them, learn from them, and love them.

I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood. It’s not famous for producing success stories, or CEOs. My childhood was fairly free and uncared-for. My parents only cared about partying and themselves, which left me to figure out life on my own.
Being fairly successful now and living in a much better neighborhood, I still think about the days of working to buy my own school lunch. Even though growing up privileged (享有特权的) would have been great, there are so many things I wouldn’t trade from growing up poor.
You had to learn to survive on your own. Your neighborhood was rough and full of people looking to take advantage of you. These experiences have made you stronger. You observe your environment, keep up your guard at any time, and learn to trust your courage. A Harvard education is an amazing thing, but street smarts will give you something that you can never learn from books.
When you have nothing, your dreams fill the emptiness. You desire success, money, power, happiness, etc. You grew up watching rich people on TV and wanting to be someone like them. These dreams lead to passion, goals, and achievements. Even if you never make millions, you fulfill your dreams by doing better than your parents did, and going further in your career.
From a very young age, you had to learn to budget for gas, food, weekend money, and clothes. You had to work harder for everything in your life, so you appreciated it more and it has taught you that work ethic (职业道德) is usually not a natural, but a learned thing. It’s hard to teach. When the privileged ones quit for the day, you didn’t, because for you there was no fall back plan or safety net. At the end of the day, you’ll do what it takes to survive.

Just as he reached the top of the slope, his foot slipped. Jason lost his balance and fell down the rocky slope, rolling over and over until he finally came to a stop at the bottom. Fortunately, Jason seemed to have only suffered a few scrapes and bruises, but he was clearly in pain and couldn’t stand up on his own.
With the first aid finished, they realized a new challenge: how to get back. The slope was too steep and slippery for Jason to climb up alone. “We need to find a safer way,” Leo said, looking around. They noticed a narrow path that seemed to lead back to the main trail, which was a relief.
