Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.

The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people — those aged 60 years or older — is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the world. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers who can provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the United States.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction, limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez, an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot ”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with deformable (可变形的) bodies or the ability to reshape themselves when touched, but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home.
However, Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3-D printer.
The design process has three steps. First, a user makes a computer-aided design file with the shape of the robot. The user then paints the file to show which directions the different joints of the soft robot will move. It takes the computer a few seconds to change the computer-aided design model into a 3-D soft machine that can be printed using any 3-D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans. Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez.
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to the market.

A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make these products from the ground up (从头开始) than to recover them. A new recycling technique reported in the journal Science promises a cost-effective way to transform these common plastic waste items into high-quality liquid fuels.
What makes plastics useful, namely their strength and resistance to high temperatures, becomes an annoyance when it comes to recycling the materials. The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics require very high temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming. Once the bonds break, the smaller molecules (分子) that are created quickly form new bonds, giving unwanted chemicals. These side products then have to be broken down again, adding time and complexity.
Researchers developed a way to turn these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃, without creating any side products. They conduct the chemical reaction in the presence of a new type of catalyst (催化剂) in a special acidic solution. In these reaction conditions, as soon as the carbon bonds in the plastic break apart, new bonds form in a controlled way, giving off the chemicals called alkanes. The alkanes can be used either as a fuel or as a raw material for new plastics. The entire reaction takes place in a single reaction container. It takes only three hours and occurs at 70℃. By comparison, existing recycling techniques typically require two stages, take much longer and need temperatures of over 200℃.
The catalyst that the researchers use is already used by some factories. But it will take more research to know whether the technique can be translated to more occasions. If so, such a one-step, low-cost method to turn single-use plastics into chemicals, fuels and high-value materials could go a long way in making the plastic economy sustainable.
