“Lily, where is your homework again ” Mr. Clark asked. It was a usual question for Lily.
Lily just shrugged and gave a small smile. Forgetting homework was normal for her. She’d rather play games or watch funny videos after school than do her homework. She thought homework was boring and a waste of time, and she didn’t see why it mattered so much.
“Please try to remember next time,” Mr. Clark said patiently. He reminded her every time, but Lily never seemed to learn.
That afternoon, her class was divided into groups for a very important science project. “Let’s start our work. The next day, when she proudly took out the materials in class, everyone in her group smiled with relief. “Great job, Lily! You saved our project,” Sara said with joy.

Paper cutting is a traditional Chinese art. It’s not only beautiful but also full of meaning. Today, it’s still loved by people around the world. But what is paper cutting And why is it so special
All paper cuttings are made with paper and scissors (or knives), but they are not the same. There are many kinds of paper cutting. You can see red paper cuttings for festivals, black ones for window decorations, or colorful ones for gifts. Each type has its own pattern(图案) — like flowers, animals, or lucky characters.
The history of paper cutting started in China over 1,500 years ago. In northern China, paper cutting is a big part of Spring Festival. Families stick red paper cuttings of “Fu” (meaning good luck) on doors or windows. In southern China, people make beautiful paper cuttings for weddings — patterns of double happiness(a symbol of marriage) are very popular.
Tourists in Xi’an love watching local artists make paper cuttings. The artists fold the paper many times first. Then they cut out small patterns quickly with sharp scissors. In just a few minutes, a common piece of red paper turns into a lively animal or a lovely flower.
In different parts of China, people use paper cuttings for different things. For example, in Shaanxi Province, farmers stick paper cuttings of gods of harvest on their barns(谷仓). In Jiangsu Province, women often make paper cuttings to decorate their children’s clothes. Sometimes, they also put small paper cuttings in red envelopes as gifts.
In some Chinese villages, paper cutting is a skill passed from mothers to daughters. Young girls learn to cut simple patterns first, like stars or leaves. Then they practice more difficult designs, like ...

Facial recognition technology is now stepping into daily shopping. Many clothing stores are testing a new system: when a customer walks into the store, cameras will scan (扫描) their face to guess their age, body type, and even basic style preferences (偏好)—like whether they often wear bright colors or simple designs. Then the system will show them clothes that fit their style and size on the screen near the entrance. It may also show popular clothes that people of similar ages usually buy, with notes like “90% of 20-25 year olds chose this sweater”.
For example, if a 25-year-old woman with a slim figure enters, the screen may show modern dresses in light pink or blue, along with matching accessories (配饰) like small bags. If a 40-year-old man comes in, it may show casual cotton jackets in dark colors, paired with jeans that fit his body shape. Store workers say this helps customers cut down the time of searching from 20 minutes to 5 minutes, and it also increases the chance of them buying more clothes.
But some people worry about this. Lisa Green, a member of a consumer (消费者) group, points out a problem: ▲ . She says, “What if the system judges a person’s style wrong For example, a customer who likes loud patterns might get boring basic clothes. Or what if it shares the customer’s information with other shops without permission That could lead to annoying ads sent to their phones later.”
To answer these worries, the store managers say the system only uses temporary (临时的) data. It won’t save any personal details like names or addresses — the face scan results are deleted as soon as the customer leaves the store. And the screen will stop showing suggestions if the customer walks away or clicks the “close” button on the display screen.
12.What can the new facial recognition system do in clothing stores
