My name is George. When I was in middle school, I experienced a strong earthquake. When I was listening to the teacher carefully, suddenly I felt the ground shaking and everything started moving. Everyone in the classroom was shouting and crying. I was scared and even thought of the end of the world.
When the shaking stopped, the teacher quickly took us out of the classroom to the playground. We saw that the whole school was in a mess. Teachers tried to find all the students and make sure everyone was safe. As we stood on the playground, we could still feel the aftershocks.
After making sure it was safe, teachers called our parents to take us home. My house suffered some damage (损坏). The bookcases fell onto the floor and some things were broken. But I felt happy that we were all safe.
In the following days, we learned that the earthquake caused a lot of damage to the city. Many buildings fell down and lots of people lost their homes and family. I was sad to hear that.
Looking back on this experience, I know how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters and I feel more hopeful about safety now. We never know when they will happen, but we can find ways to protect ourselves and our family.

Want to stay away from colds Put on a happy pared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. “It’s possible that being happy helps the body fight illness,” say the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” said the study’s chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day. After the two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical (化学物质) that helps fight illness. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

Around the world, 8.1 million people are waiting for calls from strangers. In fact, they are the volunteers for Be My Eyes and they all have a kind heart.
Be My Eyes was started in 2015 by Hans J rgen Wiberg from Denmark. This free app connects blind people with volunteers through video calls and in this way the volunteers can help the blind with their everyday tasks. Now volunteers are a lot more than blind users. So it’s not easy for volunteers to get a call. Jane Miller from New Zealand joined Be My Eyes in 2019 but didn’t receive her first call until four years later.
Calls go out to many volunteers at the same time. If one doesn’t answer right away, another volunteer will take the call. Yan Yan, a Chinese actress, was not sure whether to join at first. She feared missing calls during performances. After learning that other volunteers would answer missed calls, she joined at once. She received her first call the very next day. Yan successfully helped an old man check on his bread. The two thanked each other repeatedly. “I was so nervous that I didn’t know why I thanked him,” she said.
Jason Brown, an Australian, was also nervous during his first call. Now he feels more confident. He recently helped a blind person cross the street. “It just felt like chatting with an old friend,” he said.
