Coming-of-age Ceremonies (成人礼)
Life is full of important moments. Entering the adult stage is an important step in everyone’s life.
In China, young people have their coming-of-age ceremony mostly at school. They wear traditional Chinese clothing, waiting for their parents to put a hat on their head or stick a hairpin (发针) in their hair. This comes from an old tradition. In ancient China, boys who reached 20 and girls who reached 15 would have capping or hair-pinning ceremonies (冠礼或笄礼).
In the United States, turning 16 is a big deal, because most teenagers get their driving licenses (驾照) at 16. Girls have “sweet 16” birthday parties to celebrate their coming of age when they turn 16. They wear fancy (精美的) clothes and have a special dance with their fathers.
In Japan, Coming of Age Day is a national holiday that takes place on the second Monday in January. People who are 20 years old will be officially adults on this day. Girls do their hair in fancy styles and put on kimonos (和服). Boys wear smart suits.
In Germany, the coming-of-age ceremony is called “Jugendfeier”—a youth celebration. During this ceremony, a teacher gives a speech to young adults, talking about values such as respecting others and being responsible (负责任的).

One sunny afternoon, Lily went out to check out the woods near her home. As she walked, she came across a beautiful garden (花园) hidden behind a tall, closed door. The garden was filled with blooming (盛开的) flowers and singing birds. Lily pushed the door, but it wouldn’t move. She saw a note stuck to the door: “Say the magic words to enter.”

Lily looked confused. “What kind of words ”
“Try asking politely,” the gardener advised.
