Commencement (毕业典礼) season has arrived again — and this year, many keynote speakers have discovered that it’s tough to get graduating students excited about a future shaped by artificial intelligence (AI).
Last weekend, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos (倒彩) during his speech to about 10,000 University of Arizona graduates on the great changes brought about by AI. A similar response met Scott Borchetta, the CEO of Big Machine Records, when he spoke to the graduating class of Middle Tennessee State University about how AI is helping the music industry.
“At the beginning we were excited about it,” said Kareen Gill, a graduate of University of Arizona with a political science degree. “But now, we don’t want it messing with the jobs that we’ve worked for years — so hard for four years — to be qualified for.”
“One immediate impact I have noticed is fewer entry level positions because AI is replacing many of those jobs,” said Sami Wargo, who just graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. “I have applied for around 30 jobs but haven’t landed one yet. That sucks.”
Not everyone has been met with verbal pushback to AI, though. When CleanHarbors founder Alan McKim spoke at the Northeastern University commencement, he appealed to the graduates to accept AI, but warned, “Your character will matter more than your code (代码).” No boos were heard in the audience.
As Dave Lee wrote in Bloomberg, “For any commencement speaker in 2026, no conversation about the future could be credible without mentioning AI. But in front of today’s graduates, striking the right tone is hard. They know the world of work they are entering has never been more uncertain. Anxiety runs high.”
4. What message can we get from the first two paragraphs
A.The keynote speeches were boring.
B.Many graduates felt threatened by AI.
C.AI has become an unavoidable topic.
D.Some graduating students were rude.
5. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Graduation.
B.Speech.
C.AI.
D.Music industry.
6. Which is closest in meaning to “That sucks” in paragraph 4
A.It is fair enough.
B.It is untrue.
C.It is very bad.
D.It is funny.
7. What is Dave Lee’s advice
A.Focus on AI’s harm.
B.Persuade graduates to accept AI.

Do you love seeing beautiful lanterns outside The best time to do this is during the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. This year it is on Feb. 22, marking the end of Spring Festival celebrations.
Lanterns are a big part of the festival. One story says that the bright lanterns show respect for gods. Another says that people light lanterns to celebrate the declining darkness of winter. Watching lanterns is a great event. You see lanterns in any sizes and shapes you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. To make this activity more fun, people paste (粘贴) riddles (谜语) on the lanterns. “Ten plus ten, still is ten, ten minus ten, again is ten.” Guess what It is a pair of gloves.
In some places, people like releasing sky lanterns, which are called Kongming lanterns. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom, where there is a small fire source. When the bright lights fly high in the sky, people bless family members and make wishes. Releasing river lights is also a way to bless for each other. Usually, the lights are in the shape of a lotus.
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. Exciting news from the University of Waterloo! A team of devoted researchers, led by PhD student Wei Wei, has made a remarkable discovery that holds the potential to change plastic waste into acetic acid (醋酸), using the power of sunlight.
Dr. Yimin Wu, a professor at the university, shared their inspiring vision, saying, “Our goal was to solve the plastic pollution challenge by changing microplastic waste into highvalue products using sunlight.” This mission is especially significant as plastic waste, particularly microplastics, has spread across ecosystems worldwide, raising serious concerns about its impact on both wildlife and human health.
With global plastic recycling rates still falling behind, this research team has stepped up to the challenge. They have developed a bioinspired photocatalysis (光催化) method using special iron atoms (铁原子). This technology copies how certain fungi (真菌) break down organic matter, showing the creativity of nature.
When placed under sunlight, the material drives a series of chemical reactions that change plastic into acetic acid with high selectivity. The reaction takes place in water, which is particularly important for addressing plastic pollution in waters.
The study shows that this method can effectively produce acetic acid from common plastics and it works well even with mixed plastic types. This adaptability makes the approach a promising replacement to traditional plastic burning, supporting ecofriendly use of materials and offering a fresh strategy for upcycling.
Roy Brouwer, coauthor of the research, stresses the benefits of this innovation, noting, “In terms of business and society, the financial and economic benefits related to this innovation seem promising.”
The research findings also open up exciting new ways for directly addressing microplastics. By breaking down plastics at the chemical level, this process could play an important role in preventing the buildup of microplastics in our water systems.
While still at the laboratory stage, the team expects that this approach could be adapted for largescale, broader environmental cleanup and the photocatalytic upcycling system can be further improved.
12. What led the research team to start their study originally
A.Rising recycling rates of plastic.
B.Business profits from acetic acid.
C.Discovery of sunlight’s chemical power.
D.Plastic pollution’s widespread harm.
13. What can we learn about the photocatalysis method
A.It can be applied to various plastics.
B.It can completely remove microplastics.
C.It breaks down plastics faster than burning.
D.It needs high temperatures to support reactions.
14. What does the team expect of their research findings
A.Helping reduce chemical use.
B.Coming into use immediately.
C.Being used on a larger scale.
D.Opening up a market for acetic acid.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from
A.A guidebook to waste treatment.
B.A scientific research report.
C.A brochure on acetic acid production.
D.A review on the plastic industry.

David came to my fifthgrade class halfway through the year. He came from a broken home: his only parent, his father, was behind bars. David refused to do homework, picked fights on the playground, and talked back to teachers. Other students avoided him, and even some fellow teachers advised me to “give up on him” — but I saw intelligence and loneliness in his eyes, especially when he stared at the nature posters on my classroom wall.
I tried to help him with assignments, and to talk to him about his secret interest in animals, and I never shouted at him even when he misbehaved. But David pushed me away. One day, he got into a fight with a classmate over a pencil, and I had to pull them apart. As I cleaned his scrapes (擦伤), he said softly, “Why do you even care ” I handed him a blank notebook: “Let’s make a nature journal — draw whatever you see outside. No rules, no grades.”
He hesitated but took the notebook, and that night, he drew a bird he’d seen in the schoolyard. The next day, he slid the journal across my desk without a word. I looked through it and smiled — his drawing was rough but full of details. “This is amazing, David. Want to add more tomorrow ” Those words seemed to shock him — no one had ever praised his work before. Slowly, he started to open up: he told me he loved drawing birds and insects, and wanted to fill the journal with all the creatures in the neighborhood.
Later, he always stayed after school to draw in the garden, hiding the notebook in his backpack like a treasure. His classmates started to notice his change: when he shared a drawing of a bug with a friend, the class fell silent in shock.

On the last day of school, David handed me a piece of paper before leaving. It was a sketch of a flying bird. Below the drawing were a few simple words: “Thank you for believing in me.” I held the paper tightly, deeply moved. David didn’t say much. He just gave me a shy smile and walked away. I kept the drawing as a precious treasure, hoping David would keep pursuing his gift for drawing.
But three years later, a tall boy showed up at my classroom door, a thick notebook in his hands. It was David. He told me he kept drawing all these years and dreamed of being an artist. The notebook was full of lively drawings of various creatures. He thanked me again for my encouragement. Seeing the great change in him, I felt proud.
