Specialists (专家) say that it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock” occurs when they are talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be diverse. The public service systems — the telephone services, the Post Office, or the transportation — may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock Everyone does in this or that way. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they had back home. They find themselves without any identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security (安全). This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
11.What could happen when people move to a new country
A.They may get used to their new surroundings with difficulty.
B.They may have well prepared for the new surroundings.
C.They may get used to the culture of the country quickly.
D.They may never be familiar with the culture of the country.
12.According to the passage, which of the following factors doesn’t give rise to culture shock
A.The language. B.The weather conditions and customs.
C.The public service systems. D.The homesickness.
13.According to the passage, who have the worst culture shock
A.People who are not successful at home. B.People who are very successful at home.
C.People who earn much money abroad. D.People who are famous abroad.
14.The underlined phrase “gives rise to” in paragraph 4 most probably means ________.
A.gets rid of B.takes place C.leads to D.makes up

Does your heart feel a warm pull every time you see ancient Chinese cultural relics (文物) Mine does. Maybe that feeling comes from visiting the Forbidden City as a kid, where the red walls and golden roofs were more of a living history story than just old buildings for every visitor like me.
Cultural heritage (遗产) protection is a growing global concern, especially for ancient cities with long histories. From digital technology to strict preservation rules, countries and institutions are seeking ways to keep historical relics alive. But in 2020, the Palace Museum tried a creative way: It opened free online digital exhibitions to show its precious collections to people worldwide.
Since then, the Palace Museum has launched (发起) over 20 digital exhibitions, featuring ancient calligraphy, royal porcelain and traditional jade carvings. Each online show was specially designed to raise awareness of Chinese cultural heritage protection and let more people touch history easily.
A study by cultural protection organizations found that less than 1% of the world’s population can see ancient relics on the spot due to location and preservation limits, with over 99% having no such chance. Many museums have tried online displays, but the Palace Museum took the concept further with high-quality digital technology.
It should be noted that the digital exhibitions are not simple relic photos. Instead, they use advanced 3D and VR technology by the museum’s professional team. High-definition scanning, virtual scene restoration and interactive tours were all put to good use, turning relics into vivid “digital cultural relics” with careful design.
Though first created for people unable to visit on the spot, the online exhibitions won worldwide praise quickly. The Palace Museum has since updated more digital content every year. Nevertheless, it reminds us that there are many new ways to protect cultural heritage, and history can be passed on and shared in warmer, more interesting ways.
15.What is true about the author
A.He likes Chinese relics. B.He worked in the Palace Museum.

My exposure to diverse cultures and global perspectives was limited. However, during my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural exchange program that opened my eyes to the beauty and importance of global engagement. This experience not only broadened my horizons (视野), but also shaped my worldview and made me realize the value of learning from different cultures.
My cross-cultural experience began when I was selected to visit a school in Nicaragua. As we arrived in the capital city, Managua, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast to my own hometown. The busy and noisy city, the colorful buildings, and the crowded street markets all seemed like scenes from a different world. I realized, at that time, that this journey would be a transformative experience.
During our time in Nicaragua, we stayed with a local host family who warmly welcomed us into their homes. This immersion (沉浸) into the local culture allowed us to experience first-hand the daily lives of Nicaraguan people. I still remember the smell of home-made food, the sound of children playing in the streets, and the warmth and hospitality (好客) of our host family. Despite the language barrier, we quickly formed deep connections and friendships that went beyond words.
One particular experience stands out in my memory. One evening, our host family invited us to a traditional Nicaraguan celebration. As we arrived at the colorful square, I was amazed by the sights and sounds that surrounded us. The rhythmic beats of traditional music filled the air, and people were joyously dancing and celebrating. It was at that moment when I found myself moving to the rhythm and enjoying the local customs that I realized the power of cultural exchange. I felt a sense of unity and connection with the people around me, despite our differences. This experience taught me that understanding and respecting different cultures can bring people closer together and help build a more connected world.
19.How did the exchange program influence the author
A.It shaped his view of his country. B.It made him fall in love with travel.
C.It deepened his understanding of the world. D.It helped him know the importance of learning.
20.What does the underlined word “stark” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Distinct. B.Fair. C.Expected. D.Common.
21.What did the author say about the language barrier
A.It created misunderstandings at first. B.It made cultural immersion impossible.
C.It failed to block genuine human bonds. D.It was overcome through formal lessons.
22.What did the author learn from the exchange program
A.Local customs were worth experiencing first-hand.
B.True connection went beyond cultural differences.
C.Celebrations brought people together naturally.
D.Music and dance were universal languages.

Ah, punctuality — the art of being precisely on time. It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack. 23 Let’s examine whether punctuality is the defining feature of a superior society or merely another subjective construct.
Each part of the world has a unique relationship with time, enriching the fabric of global culture. In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early. 24 Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot. In contrast, the Philippines has a more relaxed approach to time. If someone says 3 o’clock, arriving around 3:30 is common and expected. This isn’t laziness, but a cultural preference for living in the moment.
But does being punctual make a culture more advanced The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, and their watches are the gold standard. 25 And Switzerland is often ranked as one of the most developed and happiest countries in the world, but let’s wait a bit to conclude.
Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept. 26 If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe. Many Brazilians have a laid-back approach to life. They don’t sweat the small stuff like running five minutes late because they’re busy enjoying life. Many live by the motto, “Tudo bem”, which means “It’s all good.” Honestly, they seem to be onto something.
So, is punctuality essential It depends on what cultures you are in. Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time. 27 Let’s try to find the middle ground where we can respect others’ time while embracing the joy of living in the moment. Ultimately, time is just a construct, and life is too short to stress about being late.
A.Miss a train by a minute
B.Punctuality is timeless art.
C.But is punctuality essential
D.In this context, punctuality is flexible.
E.You could set your clock by their daily routine.
F.There, being late is not only accepted but expected.
G.Are you enjoying the journey or constantly watching the clock
