Zach Hackett was 12,000 feet up a Colorado mountain last May when he thought he heard a weak sound. As he walked through a clearing, Hackett, 33, found the source: a black-and-white sheepdog.
“I was a little surprised, because dogs shouldn’t be up there so high,” said Hackett, who had been hiking all day in the mountain. Spring temperatures dropped below zero at night, and the dog looked near death. “I believe what I’d heard was his last cry for help, and that if I hadn’t come along, he would have died there,” Hackett said.
Five weeks earlier, Mike Krugman, 74, had let his dog Riley out for a walk. When the dog didn’t come back, Krugman didn’t worry at first. But later, he became concerned and rode around his farm to look for Riley. He thought Riley might have gone looking for his wife Pam, who had died months earlier. When Pam passed away, Riley hid behind the bed for several days. The next morning, Krugman looked for the dog in the snow and asked a local animal shelter to help search. A volunteer posted “missing” posters and searched the area for Riley. But no one found him.
After Hackett spotted the weak dog, he put Riley in a coat and carefully picked his way down. He thought he had to cross the river instead of walking around it, or it would have taken too long. When he reached his apartment, he ran a warm bath for Riley. “I gave him some water, and cooked some eggs for him,” Hackett says. Hackett cared for Riley through the night, and then drove him to a nearby shelter in the morning.
“People at the shelter were shocked when they checked the records and learned Riley had been gone for five weeks and one day,” he said. In that moment, Hackett realized why Riley was so weak when he found him.
Riley weighed 24 pounds when he went missing and had lost half of his body weight. “I got this call from the shelter, and they said someone had brought Riley in,” Krugman recalled. “Of course, I cried. Riley’s survival is a wonder.”

A new study has found that a lizard (蜥蜴) that once lived in forests has gone through genetic (基因的) changes to survive in city environments. The lizard’s official name is Anolis cristatellus. It is commonly found in Puerto Rico.
The team said they discovered the lizard had grown special scales (鳞片) that helped it climb more easily on smooth surfaces like walls and windows. It also grew longer legs in order to run faster across open areas. Research results were recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Kristin Winchell is a biology professor at New York University and the main writer of the study. She told The Associated Press, “We are watching evolution (进化) as it’s unfolding.” Winchell said as city development spreads out around the world, it is important to understand how organisms adapt to new environments. That way, she added, humans can design cities in ways that can support all kinds of animals.
The study examined 96 Anolis cristatellus lizards. The researchers compared the genetic makeup of lizards in forests to those living in Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, as well as two other cities. Scientists found that 33 genes were repeatedly linked to the city spread.
Wouter Halfwerk is an evolutionary ecologist and professor at Vrije University Amsterdam. He was not involved in the study. He told The Associated Press, “You can hardly get closer to a smoking gun,” meaning evidence or proof of something. Halfwerk said he was excited that the researchers were able to identify such rich evidence that the lizards had changed genetically to adapt to a different environment.
The study centered on adult male lizards, so it is unclear if females are changing in the same way or at the same rate as males. The researchers said it is also not clear at which point in a lizard’s life the changes happen.
19.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The uses of lizards’ legs. B.The changes in the lizard’s body.
C.The skills of lizards’ climbing. D.The features of the special scales.
20.How did the researchers make the study
A.By comparing the lizards’ genes. B.By observing the lizards in forests.
C.By studying the lizards’ lifestyle. D.By testing the lizards’ living environment.
21.What is Halfwerk’s attitude to the study
A.Negative. B.Indifferent. C.Supportive. D.Uncertain.
22.What does the last paragraph show about the study
A.It lacks enough attention. B.It has little significance.
C.It meets many difficulties. D.It needs further research.

On a south-facing hill in northern Canada, snow slides down as a mother polar bear pushes her way out of the hole, sticking her head into the open air. Four months earlier, she had given birth to two bears. They stay close to their mother for warmth and food.
Barle’s life could have started like this. People think she was born and grew up on the west bank of Hudson Bay in 1984. Old papers show that she may have been sent to Germany in 1986 through the Manitoba Polar Bear Help Program. The program tried to move orphaned (孤儿的) baby bears to other countries and make sure they could live a good life. In Germany, Barle lived with animal trainer Fredy Gafner for unknown reasons. Soon after 1990, Gafner took his bear show to the Mexican Suarez Brothers Circus.
For 13 years, Barle and six other polar bears were forced to perform. People did not let Barle run, swim or climb, and she could not find a partner or have baby bears. When there were no shows, Barle and the other bears were kept in a truck with seven small metal rooms.
Barle might never have been saved if two Canadians, Ken and Sherri Gigliotti, had not helped. In 1996, the couple traveled to Cozumel, Mexico, and visited the Suarez Brothers Circus (马戏团). They were shocked and saddened by the bears’ poor living conditions. They brought home a program and shared their story with the local newspaper, the Winnipeg Free Press.
Soon after the newspaper published the story, Debbie Leahy, the head of an animal protection group, began to investigate the circus. She watched the bears perform many times, and once visited their living areas behind the stage. Every time she went there, the bears were dirty, and many flies flew around them.
Leahy made great efforts to save the bears. Later, the Manitoba government passed the Polar Bear Protection Act, which stated that only orphaned baby bears under two years of age were allowed to be put in zoos and that zoos must meet strict standards.
Due to mounting pressure from interest groups, the Suarez Brothers Circus finally left their seven polar bears in Puerto Rico and gave them up.
23.Why was Barle sent to Germany
A.To join a bear show. B.To get better care.
C.To visit her hometown. D.To receive medical treatment.
24.What was Barle’s life like while working with the Suarez Brothers Circus
A.Strict and hard. B.Easy but lonely. C.Quiet and safe. D.Busy but happy.
25.What can we learn from the text
A.The program sent all bears abroad. B.The circus kept the bears for protection.
C.Public attention helped save the polar bears. D.The program helped all homeless bears successfully.
26.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To praise the early bear program. B.To introduce Barle’s rescue story.
C.To describe the new life of a polar bear. D.To call on people to protect wild animals.

After an injury, some animals can regrow almost every cell in their bodies. Their abilities have long fascinated researchers. Now scientists are taking what they have learnt from these animals to human cells.
A zebrafish can go from being paralyzed (瘫痪的) to moving smoothly. Mayssa Mokalled at Washington University has identified a population of cells which are similar to human fetal astrocytes (星细胞) in the zebrafish that are important for this recovery. After an injury, astrocytes create a protective barrier around the damaged site.
When Mokalled’s team introduced the same molecules (分子) involved in the activation of the cells that achieve regeneration in zebrafish into human astrocytes, the cells started to look and behave more like those of the zebrafish. In initial studies, when the researchers transplanted the transformed human cells into mice, the cells seemed more effective at creating the protective barrier. “I would love to see this go all the way to treatment in humans,” says Mokalled.
But the distance between zebrafish and humans is wide. Almada, a stem-cell biologist, is instead looking at the lizard. Able to regenerate an entire tail, Lizard is the closest living relative to humans. Humans and lizards share many of the same genes. “It’ll be more translatable to human biology, because they have a lot of the same machineries at the DNA level,” says Almada.
Almada described how a population of muscle stem cells in lizards regenerates the animal’s tail. The cells are similar to those found in mice and humans, except that the lizard version can make muscle tissue, which the mouse and human versions cannot, he says. Almada hopes to work out how the lizard cells achieve this and eventually apply that to muscle growth in humans to treat degenerative muscular diseases, strengthen muscles in older people and treat wounds.
Florian Raible, a stem-cell biologist is studying yet another super-recovering animal — Platynereis dumerilii. “It’s a model for good regeneration, because its nervous system has similarities to that of humans, which makes it a relevant model for research.” says Raible.
27.What does the underlined phrase “Their abilities” in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Scientists’ research skills. B.Humans’ treatment methods.
C.Cells’ protective functions. D.Animals’ regeneration features.
28.What did Mokalled find about zebrafish
A.Its astrocytes are the same as humans’. B.Its molecules are integrated into human cells.
C.Its protective barrier can treat human diseases. D.Its certain cells aid recovery from being paralyzed.
29.Why are lizards studied by Almada
A.They are expert at regenerating. B.They have unique muscle molecules.
C.They have genes in common with humans. D.They are distinct from humans in muscle tissue.
30.What will the text talk about next
A.Further details of Platynereis dumerilii’s regeneration.
B.Differences between human nervous systems and those of animals.
C.Difficulties in applying animal research to human treatments.
D.The similarities between Platynereis dumerilii and other animals.
