At 6:00 am, I stepped out of my car into the July heat in Houston, Texas. At fifty-three, I’d train for my first half-marathon as my plan to build friendships in an unknown city!

Orienting yourself in the darkness of a cave seems like a difficult task. But some bats seem to have a clever solution. Greater mouse-tailed bats live in groups inside small caves where flying is challenging, so they hang from the cave’s walls and move deeper into it by crawling backwards. They move this way in many situations, such as in response to the appearance of a natural enemy, or when they want to find a better position in the cave.
Biologists have long wondered what role these bats’ unusually long tails play as they crawl inside the caves, so Yossi Yovel at Tel Aviv University and his colleagues designed an experiment to put the bats’ tails to the test.
In the experiment, the researchers recreated a set-up according to the inside of a cave, creating a maze (迷宫) with obstacles similar to the uneven, rocky landform the bats would encounter naturally. The team measured how long it took for the bats to climb the wall while crawling backwards, and how smoothly they were able to do so, first naturally and then with their tails anaesthetised (麻醉).
The bats used their tails like a blind walking cane, swinging them from side to side to detect obstacles and climb more safely and efficiently. In contrast, when the researchers anaesthetised the bats’ tails, their climbing time increased by an average of 10%, and the bats made more side movements instead of moving upward, apparently trying to find their way. “When you walk backwards, you can still feel with your body and with your legs,” says Yovel. “It’s clear that they can do it. But there was a significant reduction in efficiency.”
While other bat species have long tails, the researchers say this is so far the only one recognized to find its way in the darkness using this distinctive strategy. “I don’t think this is general for bats with long tails,” says Yovel, “until further research is done, we don’t really know.”

For decades, Khoji Wesselius, living in a Dutch farming village, has noticed the distinct smell of pesticides during spraying (喷洒) seasons. Now, after volunteering in an experiment to count how many such substances people are exposed to, he was shocked to find he had exposure to eight different pesticides through his skin.
Regulators closely monitor dietary intake of pesticides when deciding whether they are safe enough for the market, but little attention has been paid to the effects of breathing them in or absorbing them through the skin. According to a new study conducted by Radboud University, even people who live far from farms are exposed to several different types of pesticides from non-dietary sources. “What’s most surprising is that we cannot avoid exposure to pesticides in our direct environment,” said Paul Scheepers, a co-author of the study. “The real question is how much is taken up by the body.”
The researchers got 641 participants in 10 European countries to wear wristbands continuously for one week to capture external exposure to 193 pesticides. In laboratory tests, they detected 173 of the substances they tested for, with pesticides found in every wristband and an average of 20 substances for every person who took part. Non-organic farmers had the highest number of pesticides in their wristbands, followed by organic farmers and people who live near farms. Consumers living far from farms had the fewest.
While the presence of pesticides in the wristbands does not indicate direct health effects, the authors voiced concern about the number of different types. Researchers have suggested that some mixtures of different chemicals intensify their effects on the human body beyond what studies of individual exposure find. However, the study doesn’t determine how much of these substances actually enter the body.
“I’ve asked myself, was it worth it to know all this ” said Wesselius, who says farmers in his village do not seem to consider the wind direction when applying pesticides. “It’s remaining in the back of my mind. Every time I see pesticide spraying, I see how unaware they are of the harm it can cause.”
