Think: What do these sentences have in common
These sentences all describe what happens to the subject, not who does the action.
They all use the structure: be verb + past participle.
They focus on the action being done to something, not who is doing it.
The passive voice
Structure of the Passive Voice
Subject + be + past participle + (by + agent)
be verb: Changes according to tense and subject (am/is/are/was/were/be/been)
past participle: Regular verbs add -ed; irregular verbs have special forms (e.g. written, made, sent)
Active vs Passive Voice
Active: Alexander Bell invented the telephone.
[强调:贝尔做了发明这个动作]
Passive: The telephone was invented by Alexander Bell.
[强调:电话经历了“被发明”这个过程]

Tense Structure Example
Present Simple am/is/are + past participle English is spoken here.
Past Simple was/were + past participle This building was built in 1990.
Future Simple will be + past participle The work will be finished tomorrow.
Present Continuous am/is/are being + past participle A new road is being built near our school.
Present Perfect have/has been + past participle The homework has been done.
Modal Verbs modal + be + past participle It can be made by a 3D printer.
The passive voice
When do we use the passive voice
1. When the doer (who does the action) is unknown or unimportant:
My bicycle was stolen.
2. When we want to focus on the action or the receiver of the action:
The building was completed in 2020.
3. In formal or scientific writing:
The experiment was conducted carefully.
4. When describing processes:
The paper is cut into small pieces.
5. When describing inventions, manufacturing processes, or historical events:
Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming.
