I live in a small town with hills behind my house. After school I often walk up the hill with my little brother. We pick up plastic bottles and throw them into the recycling bin at the gate. The hill is green because we all protect it. We never pick flowers or break branches (树枝). Instead, we plant one young tree every spring. My brother names each tree, and we measure their height with a stick. Last year our “Happy Apple” gave us five sweet fruits, and we shared them with our neighbours.
On the hill we also make homes for birds. We use old wooden boxes, put dry grass inside and hang them on the trees. This spring a blue bird built a nest in our box. We watched her feed her babies and felt proud because we helped.
At home we save water by taking short showers and turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. My mother keeps a small garden. She puts vegetable peels and sapless (枯萎的) leaves into a compost bin (肥料箱), and after a few weeks the waste becomes good fertilizer (肥料). We then use the rich fertilizer to grow tomatoes and lettuce. They taste better than the ones from the market.
Living with nature is easy and fun. When we care for the earth , the earth cares for us.

四、任务型阅读
The water shortage is a big problem in many parts of the world. In some dry places, not having enough water makes daily life very hard. People there have trouble finding enough water and getting clean water to drink.
One good way to solve this problem is to dig wells. With the help of modern technology, wells can now be dug near people’s homes. Special machines dig deep into the ground to find fresh water. After finding the water, a pump is put in. Then people can easily get water from the well. Having wells nearby is great because people don’t need to walk far to get water, and the water they get is clean and safe to drink.
Collecting rainwater is another useful way. It usually needs many people to work together to build water tanks. Some tanks are built on rooftops, and some are built at schools. These tanks collect and store rainwater. The stored rainwater can be used when there is no rain. At school, these rainwater collection systems are like good teaching tools. Students can learn how to save water and protect the environment by using them.
Reusing water also helps a lot when there is not enough water. Water used for taking showers doesn’t have to be thrown away. Even the water used for washing dishes, which can’t be used for drinking or cooking, can be used again. It can be used to water plants and fruit trees. This helps keep the plants alive and saves water at the same time.

A Time I Failed to Win
I will never forget the time I failed to win the English speech contest last year. I prepared for it for a whole month. However, on the stage, I was too nervous and forgot my words. I only got third prize. I felt so disappointed and almost cried.
But my teacher told me, “Courage is more important than the prize.” Her words warmed my heart. I realized that I had already beaten the old me who was too shy to speak in public.
This failure taught me that the process of trying our best is itself a success. Now, I’m not afraid of challenges anymore. I understand that every failure can be a step toward a better me, if I learn from it.
