Sometimes, families can be hard. People argue a lot. They get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. My family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say arguments often happen in my family, too.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the baby boy in the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued pretty much all the time, just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator (调解员). I would try to look at both sides of the argument and bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t say that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day.” I’d say it often worked.
I learned much growing up in my family: understanding, being patient and the truth that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be solved and sometimes, we get angry about it. But as long as we can reflect (反思) and look at things with an attitude of care and responsibility, we can weather the storm and help each other out.

Thanks to amber, more than 300 unknown species have been found. In a piece of amber from Africa, scientists found 13 ants. Studies show they are a totally new species. A new study suggests that horses can smell human fear. Researchers believe that when people are scared, horses may sense it through their body smell. This finding could be important to riders, trainers, and anyone else who works closely with horses.
In the study, scientists collected sweat (汗水) from volunteers who had just watched either a scary movie or a happy film. They then placed cotton pads containing these sweat samples (样本) near the horses’ noses. The results showed clear differences in how the horses reacted. When exposed to (暴露于) the “fear sweat”, the horses were more easily startled, had faster heart rates, and were less likely to get close to their handlers (驯养员) compared to when they smelt sweat from people who had watched joyful scenes.
The researchers explain that this may mean fear can spread between humans and horses. Just as humans can sense each other’s emotions (情绪), horses might pick up on human fear through smell, which acts as a warning signal. One researcher noted, “Unconsciously, we can pass our emotions to animals, and this can strongly affect how they feel in return.”
Smell is a very basic and powerful sense used for communication. While most research looks at how animals of the same species communicate through smell — like finding a mate, this study shows that scent (气味) signals can also cross species lines. Horses, it seems, can notice emotional changes in humans through body smell.
The researchers advise that people who work with horses should be aware of their own emotions. Arriving in a relaxed and positive mood can lead to better interactions (互动) with the horse. If a person is afraid, the horse may also become fearful and react more strongly in a new or uncertain situation. This study just highlights how closely connected humans and animals can be.
