When I first started sending out my stories, the rejections sometimes came with a friendly line:“Good luck!” or “Try us again.” But one day an editor at The New Yorker, Mary Kierstead, added a different note: You need to learn to write badly.
I was cross. What on earth did she mean I was putting myself through all this trouble precisely because I wrote well. I cast her note in the bin and decided I would never submit anything to that magazine again. But her words refused to leave me alone. I began to notice places, in the works of writers I most admired, where the essay seemed to read awkwardly, repeat itself, even lose its smooth rhythm on purpose. I thought of one writer who said that the best dialogue should sound a little choked, as if there were more inside a person than could ever quite be said. All my fine words—the clever images, the careful little alternatives to “he said”—were, I began to see, like air filling a chamber when what it really needed was fuel.
What Kierstead was telling me, I now believe, was to let go of my cleverness and follow instead the natural voices of my characters, with all their silences and hesitations. If the writing was a little plain or even awkward, so be it; every word should serve the story and trust the reader to hear what was beneath.
I still struggle with this. I long to reach for long and beautiful words, and I hate giving them up for plain ones. But I try, day by day, to choke the fine writing off. What cannot quite come out does come through, in the end. And everything depends on it.
24. How did the author react when she first read the editor's note
A. She threw it aside. B. She thanked the editor.
C. She wrote back at once. D. She asked friends for help.
25. What did the author begin to notice in her most admired writers’ works
A. Their words flowed smoothly. B. Their style stayed polished.
C. Their rhythm sometimes broke. D. Their dialogue grew complex.
26. What does the author now believe the editor was really telling her
A. To copy famous writers. B. To trust the story itself.
C. To use only plain words. D. To give up clever images.
27. What does the text mainly suggest about good writing
A. Real skill comes only with many years. B. Style matters more than the story itself.
C. Editors usually know better than writers. D. What is left unsaid can still reach the reader.

Researchers from Penn State University believe they have developed a flexible, sticker-like wearable device able to understand even the most advanced poker face (扑克脸), according to the finding published last month in the journal Nano Letters. The wearable device analyzes the tiny changes in physical responses to predict how a person is feeling.
The researchers set out to create a “multi-modal sensing” device that collected several physical signals at the same time without interference (干扰). To do that, the team designed the small, sticker-like device made from thin layers of flexible metals, folded and cut into wave-like shapes. Its flexible structure allows it to continue collecting real-time data even when bent, stretched, or pulled. A rechargeable battery powers the device.
Once placed on the skin, the sensors check for changes in skin temperature, heart rate, humidity (as expressed through sweat), and blood oxygen levels. Each of these signals can be linked to emotions. While each signal alone gives limited information, the researchers say measuring them all together in real time gives a much clearer picture of how a person feels. This stream of data is changed into digital signals and sent to a phone or a computer. Then, a special computer program analyzes the data to guess what emotion the person is experiencing.
In an experiment with eight volunteers, people watched a series of videos that caused feelings while wearing the sticker. They were instructed to make facial expressions for emotions like happiness, fear, sadness, and anger. The device matched these expressions with 92.28% accuracy (精准性). More importantly, it also found the emotional responses with 88.83% accuracy when people watched the videos with no expressions on their faces.
Though the sticker is still in the testing stages, researchers believe it could one day be a particularly useful tool to help clinicians better understand the emotional state of non-verbal patients. Early indications of mental health issues, which might otherwise go unnoticed, could be treated professionally at an early stage before those situations worsen.
28. What is a feature of the device
A. It is plastic-coated. B. It is poker-sized.
C. It is solar-powered. D. It is layer-structured.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about regarding the device
A. What it changes. B. How it functions. C. How it is developed. D. What it is used for.
30. What do we know about the experiment
A. It analyzed verbal responses. B. It included sufficient subjects.
C. It showed trustworthy results. D. It proved effective in medicine.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A device: to analyze fitness data B. A sticker: to read hidden emotions
C. A model: to replace human doctors D. A sensor: to track facial expressions
D
With AI voice assistants and chatbots becoming increasingly common in daily life, talking to AI in public often feels like broadcasting your private thoughts to strangers, creating a major privacy headache. Fortunately, an Asian start-up Verne Technologies is developing a noise-cancelling mask to keep your AI voice chats private. The upcoming product is called the Wearphone, which promises to lower your voice by 10 to 20 decibels (分贝).
While wearing the mask, you interact with various chatbots, making it work as a voice input device. For phone calls and virtual meetings, the mask also enables you to speak in a crowded office space or café without giving away your private information. Though the product is still in development, it is expected to feature both active noise cancellation and physical soundproofing.
Yet there is one aspect holding it back from wide use. A tester says covering his face with the mask stops him from communicating naturally with people around. The concept trades privacy for awkwardness, as users have to cover their faces all the time. This not only creates a barrier to face-to-face communication but also makes people feel uneasy in public, which may greatly prevent its social acceptance.
Still, Verne Technologies is betting that the AI chatbot era will create a need for at least some users to demand extra privacy. The company says the mask itself is built with style and comfort in mind to encourage adoption. In addition, the mask can be taken apart into pieces, allowing you to clean the inside with UV light, which addresses easy-to-clean concerns for a wearable device.
Finally, the Wearphone serves as a stylish solution to your private AI interactions in public. Yet, since only a model has been shown, and improvements are still in progress, you need to be patient to experience this invention firsthand.
32. What is people’s concern while using voice-based AI
A. Poor voice quality. B. Privacy risk. C. Background noise. D. Slow response.
33. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the Wearphone
A. How it operates. B. Where it can be used.
C. Why it is created. D. What advantages it has.
34. What may influence people to accept the product
A. Its social discomfort. B. Its inconvenient operation.
C. Its difficulty in cleaning. D. Its interruption to public talks.
35. Where does the product stand at present
A. Already on sale. B. Still in test stage.
C. Ready for consumers. D. Just a concept idea.

My mother once told me, “You sang before you could speak.” I don’t know if that’s true, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve loved lifting my voice in high melodies (旋律). I joined my first choir when I was five and immediately fell in love with music. As a shy child, second row in the choir was perfect for me. I could experience the excitement of singing for an audience without having to be the center of attention.
When I entered junior high, I eagerly joined the choir. Our choir director, Mrs. McKee, was incredibly supportive of me, musically and personally. She knew I liked hiding in the group, so her question caught me off guard. “Allison, how would you like to sing a solo (独唱) in the Christmas concert ” My stomach tightened into a knot. “Um, do you mean a verse (节) with the choir ” “No, I’d love for you to sing a whole song by yourself. You can pick the song. I’ll play the piano for you.”
My mind started to swim. Unknown to anyone, I had long dreamed of singing a solo! I fantasized about a version of me who was brave enough to sing for crowds of people, sharing my song around the world. But I wasn’t that person yet. I was still the person who wanted to hide in the second row.
I mentioned Mrs. McKee’s offer to my parents. They were thrilled! They loved music and would do anything to encourage my self-confidence. With their support, I accepted Mrs. McKee’s offer. I started to prepare: learning the song, memorizing the words, and practicing with Mrs. McKee on the piano.

Paragraph1: The big day finally arrived. My hands shook nervously backstage as I waited for my turn. Watching other students perform, my heart beat wildly, wanting to run away. But I thought of my parents’ warm encouragement and Mrs. McKee’s patient guidance. When my name was called, I walked slowly to the stage, took a deep breath and stood in front of the piano.
Paragraph2: As the audience cheered for my solo, I glanced at Mrs. McKee at the piano. She smiled warmly and nodded at me. All my shyness faded away. I realized I didn’t need to hide any longer. Singing alone didn’t scare me anymore. I found courage in music and the people who believed in me. From then on, I dared to show myself and enjoyed standing in the spotlight.
