By my early 40s, I had tried out every hobby that was supposed to make me feel better about entering middle age. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with a history of more than 5,000 years, is a precious part of Chinese traditional culture. When spring arrives, keeping warm becomes less of an issue. However, scientists remind us it is not just a seasonal necessity — heat is also a valuable energy resource that can be stored. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) have discovered an innovative solution beneath our feet: using soil as an efficient thermal energy(热能) storage system.
KTU professor Dr Tadas dankus and his team have been investigating how the ground can serve as a medium for heat storage. At the core of their research is a ground-based heat accumulator that would store left energy underground and make it available when demand peaks.
Initially, the team explored how to use wind energy to produce heat via a hydraulic system (液压系统). They found that so-called hydraulic losses, typically seen as inefficiencies, were actually generating usable heat. However, part of heat was lost before reaching buildings. The question became how to not only decrease heat loss but also store it.
To test this idea, the researchers conducted experiments using an artificial heat source placed in surface soil layers. They measured how heat spreads and persists in the ground. In one test, when the soil was heated to the boiling point, it caused a phase change (相变), in which liquid water becomes vapor. “Phase change can be an efficient way. We noticed a sharp temperature rise wherever the vapour flow reached. This means the energy is moving and can be controlled.” says Prof. dankus.
Once the possibility of underground heat storage was confirmed, researchers began exploring its practical applications. They developed a pilot model ground energy cell to study how heat spread through soil. The year-long measurements revealed the soil beneath buildings could passively store heat, making use of the natural downward flow of heat from buildings into the ground.
To put these ground-based storage systems into widespread use, researchers are now developing scaled-down pilot models and refining(改进) heat distribution control methods. “Our immediate goal is to integrate existing solutions into a system that can benefit both industry and residential sectors.” dankus concludes.

M: So when did you go to Tanzania
W: Last year, in March. They asked me to go there for the start of construction.
M: And how long did you stay there
W: Four months. I came back when the school had just been built. Besides, we finished it two months early and saved $10, 000 on construction costs.
M: That’s great. So what other projects have you worked on
W: I’ve done a lot of construction projects, but I’ve also helped to set up a few training programs.
M: And have you ever led a team
W: No, not yet, but I’ve learnt a lot about managing people. I know I’m ready to do this job.
M: Why did you decide to work in this field
W: My mother lived in Africa when she was a child. She’s often talked to me about her life there. I wanted to discover it for myself.

W: So Richard, tell us about what got you started as an independent film maker.
M: From an early age, I enjoyed watching films and was fascinated by directing and photography, but it never occurred to me that I could do it myself until one day I picked up my father’s camera and started recording what was happening around me every day. I then worked at a local video shop that had a section of unclassifiable films. These films made up their own rules and always left me feeling as if something inside me had changed. They also proved that the medium of film could change someone’s views of the world, and that made me more determined to pursue film making.
W: And yet you claim that you don’t make art films.
M: Even though I want to make this type of film, it is easy to produce a bad one. More importantly, I just want to express my message through understandable films, using pictures and music, but not some abstract art concepts. By the way, I am not interested in art films that follow a predictable pattern.

W: Ladies and gentlemen, at the moment, all I want to do is thank our performers for the pleasure they’ve given us this evening. And of course I must express our thanks to those who’ve worked behind the scenes, especially our producer. But most of all I want to say “thank you” to all of you for coming here this evening and supporting this event, especially in such weather. I think I perhaps should take this chance to make an apology to those sitting in the back rows. We’ve made some repair to the roof, but unfortunately the wet tonight is unexpectedly heavy, and we’re thankful to you for your understanding and cheerful good humor. We had hoped that the repairs would be enough. But we were recently told that the whole roof would have to be replaced. We were sad to learn the news because it’s only five years since we replaced the roof of the church itself. And so we shall be having another concert soon, I hope. Finally, I want to tell you the good news — it is bright and a little windy tomorrow. And I wish all of you would have a nice and relaxed day. You can go to the park or theater, etc.
