Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning (闪电). Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed (棚屋) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be. Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity (电), either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lightning.
If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.
9. From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A.storms are scary and harmful
B.storms often come without warnings
C.people should wait and watch lightning
D.people should take action after the storm
10. The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.a building B.a car C.a shed D.a room
11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.It’s safe to stay indoors to play computer games during a storm.
B.Reading books is as dangerous as using electrical things in a storm.
C.We should not wash our hands when a storm comes.
D.If a person is hit by lightning, you should move him or her to a safe place at once.
12. What’s the best title for the passage
A.Training Steps B.Home Rules C.Natural Order D.Storm Safety

Ronny looked like every other kid in the classroom where I volunteered as the Reading Mom. However, he had trouble speaking, so he found it hard to read aloud like other kids in his grade.
I worked with all the students in Ronny’s class one by one to improve their reading skills. On the days when it was Ronny’s turn, I’d give him a kind smile. That’s why he sat very close to me and opened the book, it seemed like he were opening a treasure.
I watched how he tried to read aloud. Every time he managed to read a word, the biggest smile would appear on his face, and his eyes would shine proudly. Seeing this, I was deeply touched.
A few weeks before the school year ended, I sent Ronny a book written by me. A few days later, I returned to the school to visit. I noticed Ronny sitting on a chair near the playground, with the book open on his lap (大腿部). His head teacher said, “He hasn’t put down that book since you gave it to him. That’s the first book he’s ever actually had.”
Deeply moved, I walked towards Ronny and asked softly, “Will you read me your book, Ronny ” For the next few minutes, he read to me more clearly than I’d ever thought possible from him. It seemed that he had read it many times. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great satisfaction (满意),” What a good book!”
At that moment, as a writer, I knew I would get serious about my own writing—care enough to write a story that influences a child’s life.
13. What was Ronny’s problem
A.He couldn’t write well. B.He couldn’t make friends.
C.He couldn’t say a word. D.He couldn’t read normally.

A.Because of the writer’s kind smile.
B.Because of his wish to find a treasure.
C.Because of the writer’s rich knowledge.
D.Because of his idea of improving reading skills.
15. What can we know from Ronny’s story
A.Ronny had many books.
B.Ronny made big progress in reading.
C.Ronny liked sharing books with others.
D.Ronny could finally write a good book.
16. What does the text mainly show us
A.Practice makes perfect.
